If the USPS feels overburdened, they could simply stop accepting junk mail. No one would mind.
USPS Says DVD-by-Mail Costs Taxpayers Millions
The Washington Times reports that DVD-by-mail envelopes are costing the U.S. Postal Service millions of dollars each year because the unusual envelopes require manual processing. Rentals of DVDs from companies such as Netflix cost U.S. taxpayers tens of millions of dollars each year because U.S. ...
Elsewhere when this news story was posted, someone posted a reply that seemed worth checking into -- though I did not since I don't really care that much. He noted that this study came out of nowhere from an organization with no known track record just as the striking writers were asserting their point to the media that the new avenues of online content delivery were promising new income. In other words, there was the suggestion that this study was planted as a negotiation tactic, a way to cover up the forecasts of immense profits that until last week the CEOs of the studios had been quoted as being tremendously excited about. Given the timing it seems wise to be skeptical about this study.
Variety: Studios Might Lose Billions
Variety reports that the cost of making movies is out of control, Studios set to lose $1.9 billion. The story references a Global Media Intelligence report: Analyzing the 132 pics distributed by the U.S. majors in 2006, it estimates a pre-tax operating loss of $1.9 billion after five years of exp...

How I Met Your Mother Season 2 Disc 1 has a center hub sticker, but it does not say "property of Netflix". It says "How I Met Your Mother Disc 1", apparently because the artwork on the disc itself does not feature the name of the show. The artwork on the disc is just a picture of one of the cast members and "episodes 1 -8". So it appears someone, either Netflix or perhaps 20th Century Fox, added the sticker.
Property of Netflix Stickers Discontinued?
It's been a while since Netflix started testing the "Property of Netflix" stickers on DVDs, and I haven't seen them on recent rentals. I'm wondering if they discontinued them because of problems, such as the one Dave Zatz had trying to watch Dexter. What the heck are you thinking, Netflix? I unde...
Thanks for the reminder. I'd wondered why the expected arrival date for my latest rentals was one day later than their usual estimate.
No Mail Today in Honor of The Discovery of America
The US Postal Service is closed today due to the discovery of America by the Native Americans, er, Chinese, uh, Portuguese, or the Vikings, oh, right -- Columbus (please forgive me if I left out any group claiming to have found America). Netflix is processing movies, but there will be no deliveri...
Great, now where's the sequel on how to put the sleeve back in?
How To Open a Netflix Envelope
I've tried several different techniques, and this one works without destroying the return envelope. How do you open a Netflix envelope? Update: I took some flack in the comments for this, but I'm experimenting with video as a way of showing new features, products, and services. I apologize if ...
Damn, who designed that crap HD-DVD logo? It can't even fit on the spine of the product (unless it is flipped sideways).
Paramount, DreamWorks Dump Blu-ray
Congratulations if you have any idea of the current score in Blu-ray vs. HD DVD, as the field position seems to shift every time you blink. Latest twist is that Paramount Home Entertainment -- which covers home releases of movies from Paramount, DreamWorks, Nickelodeon and more -- is dumping S...
I received the same message (except mine was the 2-out plan).
I cannot really complain, because I joined more than a year ago, before TA's unlimited in-store changes even existed! When they started it, it was a great bonus. Now that it is gone, it is back to the way it was before -- the same as Netflix.
I am actually looking forward to having to be more selective. Pressured to find in-store exchanges for every envelope, I ended up seeing much more crap, like Yo-Yo Cop Girl, than I'd ever seen before.
Blockbuster Getting Rid of High Volume Customers?
I finally got my price increase notice ("Account Alert") from Blockbuster tonight, and I was surprised to read that they would not be automatically renewing my subscription at the end of the month. Here's the text from the e-mail: Dear Michael, We have introduced a new pricing structure for our l...
Our household got this one, and as everyone says, they waited until 3 days before the next billing cycle rather than giving any time to make a decision:
Dear (me),
We have introduced a new pricing structure for our lineup of subscription plans.
As a result, the price of your current monthly plan, Unlimited Online DVDs up to 2 at a time plus unlimited in-store exchanges each month for $14.99, will increase to $21.99, effective August 31, 2007.
We will not automatically renew your subscription on your next billing date.

Blockbuster Selectively Grandfathering Subscribers
Video Business reports that Blockbuster is selectively grandfathering Total Access subscribers under old plans: Meanwhile, Blockbuster has confused the media, store employees and subscribers alike with recent changes to its Total Access pricing, which was raised for subscribers who want unlimited...
"The original (not available on DVD, by the way) theatrical release of Blade Runner..."
How does December 18 strike you? (No word on whether either company will carry it, though it is a high profile release, available in a 2-DVD set, a 4-DVD set, and a 5-DVD set).
Movies Missing from Netflix? Blockbuster?
What movies are missing from Netflix? What would you like to see on Watch Now? What's missing from Blockbuster Online?
"I'm pretty sure this movie is rated NC-17, which means BB would only carry an editing version, if available."
Blockbuster's nationwide base of customers should not be held hostage to a few hick states' morality boards.

Joe, can you check to see whether your account, when you sign in and look at your current subscription plan, says "Premium"?
Some have noticed that the word "Premium" now appears, and it is a hope that this word is an indication of the grandfathered status. But if Joe has the word "Premium" and yet still received that letter, then this means the presence of the word "Premium" is not an accurate indication of whether one has been grandfathered in.
I hope I've bought enough Twizzlers to make me worth keeping.
Blockbuster Moving Unlimited Users to Limited Plans
Joe sent in an e-mail he received from Blockbuster, informing him that his 3-out plan will now be limited to 5 movie exchanges per month: Dear Joseph, We hope you're enjoying BLOCKBUSTER Total Access™! There are some changes to our subscription plan lineup that introduce a new pricing structure a...
Blockbuster Online is missing "Shortbus" and "Showgirls". Blockbuster Online is also missing "This Film Has Not Yet Been Rated" - I can't find that film anywhere, even though it is rather famous.
I'd also like Blockbuster Online to carry the Canadian-Blockbuster-exclusive "Niagara Motel" with the star of Wonderfalls. If Blockbuster Canada could carry it, why not the US?

I am on the 2-out plan. So far my account still displays as "unlimited", however I have not received any letter saying I will stay that way... The true reveal may not come until my next billing cycle, which is in about 20 days.
Blockbuster E-mail Regarding Price Change
A reader sent in the following e-mail he received from Blockbuster regarding the price change. The date on the E-mail was the 27th, a full day after the deadline for changing plans. Dear _______, We want to let you know about some changes to our BLOCKBUSTER Total Access™ subscription plans. This ...
Jail should be used primarily to protect the public from people who endanger people. While having Netflix envelopes stolen may be an inconvenience to the public, and may be a financial burden to Netflix, it did not endanger anyone. (That political guy did of course endanger the lives of undercover agents, directly or indirectly, and jail is appropriate).
Ex-Postal Clerk Gets 1.5 Years for Stealing DVDs
The Houston Chronicle is reporting that a postal worker was caught on surveillance video stealing 122 Netflix movies, and had more than 8,000 at his house. Authorities accused 53-year-old Anthony Zuniga of Houston of swiping thousands of movies from the mail system. Zuniga was convicted of two co...
