Beautiful, disturbing and ultimately sad... how long before deco gas masks are a reality?
Blind, a short film about post-nuclear Japan
I don't really know what to say about it at the moment, but it's a beautiful short five-minute movie worth watching.
Fascinating, interesting, and positive - Japan's dark clouds always have silver linings.

Package lets you grill fish in the microwave
Apparently, grilling fish in the microwave is really popular these days. It's hard to believe that the flavor of a real grilled fish can be replicated this way. Has anyone tried it? (Thanks, Kazu Y!)

24-year old pet store manager steals penguin to pay off debts
A 24-year old pet store manager in Nagasaki named Akira Honda was arrested for stealing a penguin from a zoo to pay off his debts. The bird he snatched was a Humboldt Penguin; they're South American birds that grow to about 27 inches tall and 130lbs heavy. They're not on the endangered species...
Those appear to be "crunching" USB characters, though there are indeed a wide range of "humping" USBs available as well.
USB humping Kinnikuman
There's a huge display of humping USB people at Tokyu Hands. My favorite was this one of Kinnikuman doing sit-ups.
It's a curious mixed message that's being sent. On the one hand, "Please refrain from drunken behavior" - on Tokyo Metro. Instead, "Please do it at home". Your wife, kids, cat, etc all thank you!
Subway campaign urges people to get drunk at home, not in public
A series of new manga-ified public service posters by Tokyo Metro shows people getting drunk, putting on makeup, and doing other embarrassing things on the train. The message, written boldly at the top in Japanese and English: "Please do it at home." via Boing Boing
Hello Kidney!
Hello Kitty's internal organs revealed
Ever wonder what Hello Kitty's insides look like? Here's your answer. Link
Lovely... and the t-shirts look nice too. I just worry about the G in "Mango" looking a lot like a C.

Maker Faire, my favorite artsy crafty geeky event of the year, was a couple weeks ago. I walked around with Make EIC and fellow Boinger Mark Frauenfelder to check out some of our favorite things. Link
Tendo's tattoos are stunningly beautiful, has she done a graphic portfolio of her body art? Might be a good companion piece to Yakuza Moon.
Yakuza Moon, a book about a yakuza's daughter
If you've ever wondered what it's like to be a yakuza boss' daughter, Yakuza Moon: Memoirs of a Gangster's Daughter is a must-read. The author, Shoko Tendo, tells her story with brutal honesty. We all know how big a role family plays in shaping one's life, and it's amazingly interesting to see ...
Ganbarre Lisa, very cool - but what's with the "Ms. Katayama", is the WSJ always so formal? Be funnier if they spelled it "Mizz Katayama".
TokyoMango on the Wall Street Journal
I was interviewed for the Wall Street Journal's Front and Forward section, which is in today's paper, about 3 tech trends from Japan: virtual boyfriends, augmented reality tourism, wearable remote controls, etc. I don't get the print version of the WSJ, but you can find it here. TokyoMango on ...
Taste aside, some of the best things about Japanese canned coffee are the names: BM, BJ, Black Boss and Deepresso to name just a few.

On BBG: Coffee in a can is big in Japan
On BBG today, I wrote about coffee in a can which, as far as I can tell, is largely a Japanese phenomenon disguised as a manly American one. When I was a teenager in Tokyo, I used to drink coffee all the time — from a can, from a vending machine, often at the train station on my way home from ...
"Searching for a Starbucks"... that's a phrase I thought I'd never hear!

I like how the two DX pillows look like a couple of mini-toilets. I'm surprised they don't have smiley faces.
Toilet knee pads to prevent pee from splashing
This could be the greatest Japanese invention yet. It's a knee pillow for guys who like to pee standing up—now they can do it kneeling down so that their pee doesn't splash all over the place. What a great invention! Product page (via Gizmodo)
It's OK Lisa, you can freak out next time... as long as you wear that red dress :op
Video: My talk at Ignite SF
Here's a very nicely edited video of my 5-minute slideshow presentation at Ignite SF at the Mezzanine (a night club) on April 1st. There was a technical glitch, and you can see me give the slidemaster a dirty look when it starts getting screwy. It was fun though—I am grateful to have had the ...
You should do more TV, you come across as very natural and never patronize the audience. Short Urawaza segments like this one would fit in well with any number of shows.
Video: Me and Urawaza on View from the Bay
I hesitated about putting this up on TokyoMango-a LOT-because it's kinda embarrassing to see myself on TV, but here it is: a clip from my appearance on ABC's View from the Bay in July 2008. I'm actually also on their new digital network show, Home with Lisa Quinn on Live Well HD, but I haven'...
