Wait, we can play the birthday card? Mine is today, so can I have a +1 to my roll? :)
a very limited (I mean VERY limited) autographed book lottery
Yesterday, I said: I found nine hardback copies of The Happiest Days of Our Lives that I must have put there when they first arrived at my house a couple of years ago. They look as perfect as they did the day they were taken out of the box. So I have this idea to sell them, that goes like this:...
Wow, this sounds awesome.. I'd like to toss my name in the hat too.. !

There's a sword in that picture of Felicia? Sorry, I'm not seeing it...

I think this is one of those rare things that can be equally enjoyed* by those who have context, and those who don't. *for very disturbing values of 'enjoyed'
It would be incredible to win the Season 3 DVD, especially signed... I wonder if, perhaps, I can influence the random choice...

Radio Free Burrito: Episode Twenty-Eight
Holy Crap, it's time for a new episode of Radio Free Burrito! Has it really been three weeks since the last show? I guess it has. Well, I brought a note that will hopefully excuse my absence... Show Notes: The logo was designed by WWdN:iX reader Marc, who asked that I not link to his "in progr...
I am so friggin STOKED for this movie...
Just finished reading Watchmen for the first time.. (Dammit, gimme my geek cred back!) Gonna read it again.. Incredible. Simply.. Wow..
I hope the movie can at least come close to living up to the comic..
yet another awesome video for watchmen
They've done another video to promote Watchmen, this time made to look like a 16mm film made in 1977: If you're not familiar with Watchmen, I may need to explain — well, before I finish that, I will encourage you to buy Watchmen right now and go read it. I'm serious. Don't even eat or pe...
I would love to know what the outcome would be if the bailout failed to pass. Seriously, can wall street not recover on its own? Isn't this what Chapter 11 is for?
And did anyone notice that the two remaining investment banks went on and on about how they were ok until after the bailout was announced? Then suddenly they change their tune and switch their business to bank holding so they can get a cut of the bailout? Not to mention that Paulson was the CEO of one of those companies until 2006... Hrm.... Do I smell a conflict of interest here?
I say we all get together and start a new party. We can call it the Wheaton party. We'll stand for peace, justice, role playing, and guitar hero. We'll rock out with our cocks out and lead this country into a new era.
Who's with me?
REQUEST FOR URGENT CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP
This was forwarded to me by a friend. It's important to laugh, when the only other option is to cry. From: Minister of the Treasury Paulson Subject: REQUEST FOR URGENT CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP Dear American: I need to ask you to support an urgent secret business relationship with...

I'm probably going to need to buy a new hard drive to download all of these old radio classics.. War of the Worlds, Superman, Green Hornet, AAH! I'm in heaven!
Dude, you rock!
BTW.. Audible kinda blows because of the DRM crap.. BUT.. *cough*There are ways around that...*cough* Once converted to OGG vorbis, I use my wonderful iRiver H-140, complete with RockBox firmware, to listen to them. RockBox has automatic bookmarks, so it makes listening very enjoyable.. :)
time machines for sale
I've been in the car a lot more than usual lately, so I've been listening to The Minority Report and other Stories by Phillip K. Dick, read by Keir Dullea (best known as Dave Bowman in 2001.) It's a fantastic collection of unabridged stories, and Mr. Dullea does PKD's stories more justice than a...
This so-called text-speech is driving me nuts these days. It's not bad enough that I see it all over the Internet on message boards as well as chat rooms, but it's invading my TV as well. I swear, I'm going to throw a chair through my TV if I have to sit through one more of those damn AT&T SMS ads. Text-speech is just as bad as the old l33t-speak of old...
I think it was summarized the best on Californication (great show, btw) : "Just the fact that people seem to be getting dumber and dumber. You know, I mean we have all this amazing technology and yet computers have turned into basically four figure wank machines. The internet was supposed to set us free, democratize us, but all it's really given us is Howard Dean's aborted candidacy and 24 hour a day access to kiddie porn. People...they don't write anymore - they blog. Instead of talking, they text, no punctuation, no grammar: LOL this and LMFAO that. You know, it just seems to me it's just a bunch of stupid people sudo-communicating with a bunch of other stupid people at a proto-language that resembles more what cavemen used to speak than the King's English."
ill communication
My Ocean beeped at me, announcing the arrival of a text message from my younger son, Nolan. I opened it up and read, “mom will b gon ur goin 2 din thing rite but 5 is fine then k.” I turned the phone around in my hands, and wondered if maybe I some packets had been dropped during transmission. T...
Amazing, and here I thought I was the only one in the world who avoided MySpace like the plague... Fortunately, this particular account seems to be fairly well laid out, unlike most of the other nauseating, eye-bleeding, suicide-inducing accounts...
Oh, and the music is pretty funny too.. :)
oh my fucking god. pink floyd polka
If you're anything like me, you avoid MySpace like a GOP fundraiser or the bird flu, but this is a case where it's not just okay to make an exception, it's an imperative: Go listen to Polka Floyd. (via boingboing)
Hrm.. I'm living in PA and I can say that I've heard about this flashing lights bit as far back as 1993, possibly earlier... So it's been around the block a bit..
and now, urban legends
All this week at blogging.la, we're doing a series called The Top Los Angeles Urban Legends, counting down the top 25, as voted on by a top secret cabal of blogging.la-affiliated people, who live in a shadowy cave up in Beachwood Canyon and gather each full moon to -- wait. I've said too much. I...
I'm both a gamer and a PA fan.. Since the early, early days of BluesNews and Looneygames. Hell, Looneygames was an awesome online mag...
I have to say that CTS is definitely one of my favorites, enough so that I picked up the CTS laser cell when it was out. Just barely got it too... I think we killed the ThinkGeek servers that night.
FF is pretty funny too.. Just picked up the smaller laser cell of that...
It's amazing to look back at the earlier comics and see how Gabe's style has changed over the years. With his artistic talent and Tycho's wit and humor, they make an unstoppable comedic force.
it's just a door that a man opens with a rope
Many years ago, when I attended my first or second San Diego Comicon (and met Loren and Ben, who were instrumental in the creation of WWdN) I met the guys behind Penny Arcade. Even though I'm not an especially active video or online gamer (except poker, which I wasn't playing online when I met t...
*sigh* Unfortunately, I didn't get to see much of the game, and I didn't catch many of the commercials until seeing them on youtube yesterday.
I had it all planned out. Took care of everything that needed doing before the game and sat down to watch. Got interrupted about 5 minutes in by my son who wanted something opened. No problem, taken care of. Now he wants to play. Ok, I went and played. And by that time it was 20-30 minutes in and I gave up. Took care of the kids, got them washed up for bed and whatnot. Now it's halftime and I really have no interest in Prince. So, I went to bed..
*sigh* I really wanted to see the game too. And while I could have taped the game, it's just not the same.
the not so super bowl
Though I really enjoy (and used to play) ice hockey, and enjoy soccer and baseball tremendously, I'm not a huge sports fan. I don't really live or die when teams win or lose, and until recently, I couldn't stand football. That all changed when I got HDTV. I can't quantify why, but football went ...
Wil, I have to agree. I cannot believe our nation has devolved to such a point where a bunch of blinking lights can incite terror attacks. Hell, the bomb squad even took steps to blow up the first "device"...
The terrorists are clearly making a big impact and generally kicking our ass in this so-called war.
I think the people of Boston have every right to be upset, but let's point the blame in the right direction. I think the police clearly over-reacted to this whole situation. Granted, it is better to be safe than sorry, but I hardly think the lengths they went to were necessary. An inspection of the first "device" should have been enough to calm things down considerably. Now I think the governor is just looking for someone outside of his administration to blame and since Turner was the "perpetrator" of this ad campaign, they sit right in the cross hairs.
That's not to say that Turner isn't to blame at all. At the very least they've learned a valuable lesson here. If you're going to put stuff like this up, at least alert the local police department so they don't go running around like a bunch of sugar-rushed children screaming fire.
*sigh* Society today sucks.
media: point the finger at yourself
You know, the way the Media is behaving regarding the whole [adult swim] marketing deal in Boston is really pissing me off. The Media decided this thing was intended to be a terrorism hoax (when there is no evidence at all that's what it was) and now they're all howling for some terrible retribu...
OK! OK! *sigh*
I bought it. Started yesterday with "Alphabet" ... Really interesting stuff. I have no idea that the Egyptians essentially kick started literacy... :)
ye gods, it doth amaze me
Yesterday's Intellectual Devotional entry was on Julius Caesar, and said in part: Caesar was declared dictator by the Senate in the midst of his civil war with Pompey. It was a time of crisis, and the leader was thought to require decisive, emergency powers. But the emergency never passed. The Re...
Ok, first comment ever on your blog. I enjoy reading your blog, it's pretty well written..
Anyways, on to my comment. I've seen the original 3 multiple times, as any good geek should. I've seen the new three only once each. Episode 1 sucked and it was everything I could do to bring myself to see episode 2. Not quite as bad, but there was just so much potential there that was just looked over..
And then there's episode three. Ok, I get the general idea. Anakin needs to become Darth Vader. Ok, I can understand that. However, I hardly figured it would go the way it did..
Palpatine "Join me"
Anakin "Well.... Uhh.. Umm... Ok."
Palpatine "Go kill all the child Jedi"
Anakin "No prob boss, be right back"
Um.. what the fuck? *MAYBE* I can believe he joined Palpatine quickly. But to run off and kill a few dozen CHILDREN as yout first assignment? With next to no regret? Cmon.. That's just WAAAAAAAY out there.. If that's really the way he was all along, I hardly think Yoda or the rest of the crew would even have looked his way...
Then there's the ending. The penultimate ending for that movie was the placing of the mask. At that point, the movie should have ended. In fact, I rose from my seat to go shut off the DVD! (Couldn't justify paying to see it in the theater based on the crapiness of the first two) But it just continued! Another what, 10-15 minutes? WTF? If you're watching the movies, you've likely seen the original three and you know how Luke and Leia get separated. If not, then you get to figure it out later in the series. Why ruin the end of the movie just to show the kids being taken to their new homes? *sigh*
The new three were really quite a disappointment..
Oh.. and Han shot first, dammit.
Geek in Review: Han Shoots First (updated)
(note: this is updated below) This week's Geek In Review is called Han Shoots First. It ponders why Star Wars is so important to a certain generation of geeks, and why we took it so personally that the new movies sucked so hard. It was a challenging thing to write and keep within a reasonable ...
