"At the *time of its release* in Q3 2001, IE6 had groundbreaking support for CSS."
From what I read, it was not really groundbreaking, but it did have OK support for CSS1.
"Later, as MS released IE 4 and 5, which were also incompatible with Netscape, as well as with IE 3, the situation just got worse."
Yea, it was around that time that the Web Standards Project was created.
"And while Navigator 4.0 had its flaws, it was the debacle that was Netscape 6 that really did them in."
Yea, cancelling the Mariner project (Navigator 5) was a big mistake.

Did IE6 Make Web 2.0 Possible?
One of the cornerstones of Web 2.0 is the XMLHttpRequest object. It allows JavaScript to call back to a web server without incurring a traditional HTTP postback. It's the heart and soul of AJAX, and it's a completely proprietary feature Microsoft introduced along with IE 5.0 in March 1999. Supp...
Stefankendall: "Net neutrality means simply that all *like* Internet content must be treated alike and move at the same speed over the network. "
The Importance of Net Neutrality
Although I remain a huge admirer of Lawrence Lessig, I am ashamed to admit that I never fully understood the importance of net neutrality until last week. Mr. Lessig described network neutrality in these urgent terms in 2006: At the center of the debate is the most important public policy you...
Not to mention if you want to impersonate someone, in most websites it is only slightly harder to create an account with a fake name to login with than putting a fake name into a Name field, which can be an issue for famous people, which is why I recommend using a verified Facebook, Twitter or Google account whatever possible when they comment on websites.
The Dirty Truth About Web Passwords
This weekend, the Gawker network was compromised. This weekend we discovered that Gawker Media's servers were compromised, resulting in a security breach at Lifehacker, Gizmodo, Gawker, Jezebel, io9, Jalopnik, Kotaku, Deadspin, and Fleshbot. If you're a commenter on any of our sites, you prob...
"stop trusting every random internet site with a unique username and password! Demand that they allow you to use your internet driver's license -- that is, your existing Twitter, Facebook, Google, or OpenID credentials -- to log into their website."
Yep, I pretty much look for this first as a habit nowadays every time I have to login, and it is pretty nice. For example, I am posting this right now with my Google account.

"The odd choice of archaic DES encryption meant that the passwords they saved were all truncated to 8 characters. "
To be more precise, DES-based Unix crypt() hashing, which is weak.

Yep, I read that the 6-series chipsets don't even have PCI built-in, requiring a bridge for that too.
The ISA Bus - How Long Can It Last?
First introduced in an 8-bit configuration in 1981 and upgraded to 16-bit in 1984, the venerable ISA bus has all but disappeared from mainstream computing. However, in the embedded space, this legacy architecture has, to date, maintained a viable position. How long can it continue to do so? And...
"I upgraded mine to 4GB RAM, which is its theoretical max. That was the other reason I chose the Acer 1410. Most other netbooks are only capable of 2GB RAM."
That is because the Acer 1410 is a higher-end netbook with a Core 2 CULV processor. The Atom memory controllers mostly only support 2GB of RAM.
A Democracy of Netbooks
As a long time reader of Joey DeVilla's excellent blog, Global Nerdy, I take exception to his post Fast Food, Apple Pies, and Why Netbooks Suck: The end result, to my mind, is a device that occupies an uncomfortable, middle ground between laptops and smartphones that tries to please everyone...
"Mainstream software is finally ready for quad core CPUs."
And now in a month or so, Intel will release the first six-core Core i7 CPU as an Extreme Edition.
Building a PC, Part VI: Rebuilding
I can't believe it's been almost two and a half years since I built my last PC. I originally documented that process in a series of posts: Building a PC, Part I: Minimal boot Building a PC, Part II: Burn in Building a PC, Part III: Overclocking Building a PC, Part IV: Now It's Your Turn ...
