ak: I'm starting to think that this offseason is less re-building and more salary shredding. This is becoming clear after the non-bid on Tomas or Kang, both players that would cost nothing but money and would make our team markedly younger and gives us a bit of hope for our future. Also there were reports a couple of days ago regarding their interest in Asdrubal Cabrera, but apparently from the same reports, they would need to shred some more salary first. This is after losing Burnett and Rollins. This team is just starting to go back its head back into its small-market shell. I wish there was something more to that Eskin report from a couple of months ago about Middleton taking over the team, but even that wouldn't promise anything.

Well, there goes the last possible bit of excitement about next year. The Pirates won the bidding for Kang. Your 2015 Phillies: "We might rival the Sixers in attendance this year!"

I don't know how I feel about getting Myers back in the Hamels deal. I obviously would love him on the team, but I feel like if they were to get Myers it would almost have to be a straight swap. If Rube could somehow finagle another top prospect out of Preller then I would feel much better about it. One thing I haven't heard too much from the writers is the Phillies willingness to eat Cole's salary. If I was in the GM chair I would eat as much salary as I reasonably could to get the best prospects possible. The Phillies have their new tv deal, so despite what they may want people to think they have a ton of money to work with, might as well eat some dollars in the short term to hurry our competitive future.

Also re:Howard, it's a bit refreshing to hear Rube say that the Phillies would be better off moving on from Howard. It was nauseating hearing him yammer about his RBI production since his decline. However I think he may have killed any last shred of trade value that Howard may have had. If a team wants him they'll just wait it out until they release him.

Thanks for the info Ak. It looks like we might actually have some hope. This is from MLBTraderumors: SATURDAY 10:20pm: The Phillies or Nationals may be frontrunners, a source tells Chris Cotillo of SB Nation. Philadelphia has scouted Kang, and they traded incumbent shortstop Jimmy Rollins last week. Of course, we will update you when we hear more substantive news.

Very long time lurker here, Jung-ho Kang was just posted. Do you guys think it would benefit the Phillies at all to be the team that snagged him? I haven't read too much about him other than he's an exciting power-hitting SS. The downside is that he is 27, while that is young now, he will be 30+ by the time the Phillies right the ship.
