Interests: Hi, my name is Mary Smith. I always find it hard to explain what something is "about". When I was in university, I loved writing essays, although I often got the question, "but what is your thesis? What is the main idea?" Well, the meaning of life, of course! I love to think big. My mind is full of ideas, observations and quirky jokes that I love to share. I also believe in a practise described in the Bible, of focusing our thoughts and view on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy, and of course funny and outrageous too! I started to do this through visual journaling and when I heard about blogging, I thought, sounds great. Life is full of such riches. Seize life, I say!!!!

I think the best way to teach students about Canada is to take the most visual journey possible. The next best thing to actually taking a trip. When teaching about the Prairie provinces, the book If You Are Not from the Prairie, written and illustrated by David Bouchard, is a powerful teaching tool both in it's poetic language and painted imagry. I read it slowly to the students, emphasizing the repetitive words, "flat", "sky", "grass", "wind". After the reading, as a class, we discuss the pictures, focusing on the horizon, the colours, foreground and background. The students choose from photocopies... Continue reading

It was so great to see you and Evan too, Kirsten. The two of them spent lots of time together and even had some quality time eating ice.

In a world full of Ipods, video games and Youtube, I think it is vital to give children plenty of opportunity to engage their natural curiosity. In the beginning of the school year, before the weather starts to cool down too much, I take the children outside into the forest behind our school on variety of "nature quests". We usually have a specific discovery, something that I ask the kids to look for, and then a period of free exploration so that they can make discoveries of their own. This creates springboards for future lessons and learning. Meaningful and interactive.... Continue reading

We love it!!! We go every year. There is a lot to do, so you can make a day of it. I recommend going in late Sept., early fall before it gets too busy.

I'm afraid I can't take credit for the pickles. They were at a country store and inspired me. I did do my first canning, though and hope to share on my next post! Smiles, Mary:)
