Mary Smith
Interests: Hi, my name is Mary Smith. I always find it hard to explain what something is "about". When I was in university, I loved writing essays, although I often got the question, "but what is your thesis? What is the main idea?" Well, the meaning of life, of course! I love to think big. My mind is full of ideas, observations and quirky jokes that I love to share. I also believe in a practise described in the Bible, of focusing our thoughts and view on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy, and of course funny and outrageous too! I started to do this through visual journaling and when I heard about blogging, I thought, sounds great. Life is full of such riches. Seize life, I say!!!!

Thanks so much for commenting! Glad to hear that the project went so well!
Canada Unit: If You Are Not from the Prairies Art Project
I think the best way to teach students about Canada is to take the most visual journey possible, the next best thing to actually taking a trip. When teaching about the Prairie provinces, the book If You Are Not from the Prairie, written by David Bouchard, is a powerful teaching tool both ...
Hi, Cathy, thank you so much for your kind comment! I'm glad that a fellow Canadian teacher could use it for a Canada unit! I'm so glad that they turned out well for your students! Flattered to hear that!

27 August
Our baby boy is now just past two months old. He has changed so much in these two months. We are getting lots of smiles and lots of little "chats" from him. He is our biggest two month old so far, at just over 13 pounds now. He is also a baby who has a high level of need for his mama. I'...
Thanks, Lesley! It was so great to see you at P.R. Hope to see you more next summer!
Front Porch
A beach house is really all about the front porch, and ours needed a bit of a facelift. I finished it off by painting the door yellow, adding to projects from past summers. We'd always used the porch quite practically, but I wanted to give it a bit more character and spark. Now...
I am completely amazed by your garden and all that you do with what you have harvested. Thanks for the continual inspiration! We are just getting started at gardening: http://www.suchthings.ca/my_weblog/2013/08/from-our-garden.html
in the summer kitchen
With the shift in weather that seems to come around here on August first (really, it does), the kitchen is a comfortable and pleasant place to be these days. Which is very good thing indeed, because it's exactly where I need to be in order to preserve all the food comin...

It was so great to see you and Evan too, Kirsten. The two of them spent lots of time together and even had some quality time eating ice.
This Six Year Old Boy
We are so proud of our boy, Myles who is now six years old!!! He brings so much joy and laughter to our home with his giggles, his great sense of inquiry, his love of games and puzzles, his love of sports and his excitement to be around his friends. This year Myles had a skating party wit...

We love it!!! We go every year. There is a lot to do, so you can make a day of it. I recommend going in late Sept., early fall before it gets too busy.
Snapshots::Early October
In these busy days, I've also been enjoying days of sun, the changes of fall and baking with the 25lbs of apples that we picked. These apple muffins were scoffed the minute they came out of the oven and they have absolutely no sugar. Hope you and yours had a Happy ...
Thanks, Martina! That's so nice of you to say! I had to grow my hair because I noticed all the beautiful movie stars have long hair:)
Steveston, B.C.
We enjoyed a fabulous day in Steveston, on which happened to be my fortieth birthday. The weather was warm with a bit of a breeze blowing in from the ocean. I was so happy to be using the new portrait lens that Mark got me for my birthday-especially good for taking close-ups. It's a Cannon 5O...

Sun-dried Tomato Basil Dip
After a day at the lake there's nothing like coming home to some delicous snacks, some for the kids and some for the adults only. This dip is a recipe from my friend (wink, wink, Corina!). It's easy and a great appy to bring to a bbq or serve in the winter at a Christmas party. Most...
Happy summer to you too! Looks like you are having a good one!!
Happy First and Fourth!
We celebrated Canada Day at home and then headed to Pt. Roberts for the fourth of July. We were excited that they were having fireworks for the first time, in addition to the annual parade. They also had tons of activities for the kids, and live entertainment, BBQ and beer garden at the ...
Hi, Rosa, This was freezer jam too, and thanks for mentioning that, because I forgot to mention that in my post!:)
Strawberry Freezer Jam
Thought I'd post our strawberry jam recipe, to share it and to help me remember it for next year! Making strawberry jam is easy and fun, and it tastes so much better than store bought, made with only 4 ingredients: 3 1/2-3 3/4 cups of crushed strawberries 5 c granulated sugar (2 c less t...
Thanks, Rosa! Miranda was pretty happy to have that catch. I posted it as my first "pin" on pintrest! Thanks for introducing Mark and I to that!

For the love of Liberty, part 5
Thank you all so very much for the nice comments on my blouse. It is wonderful to sew something for myself that fits and that I will wear. It makes me want to sew clothes more and more! I have been plowing away at my Liberty quilt. I finished quilting it the other night so it's ready for bindi...
She reminds me of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
farm girl fashion
So many of you have thoughtfully asked - and worried - about my little Adelaide. She's doing very well. She was a true companion and responsible veterinarian assistant in the last hours of Maggie and Cocoa. For a girl who would much rather be in a barnyard full of animals than a room full of p...
It was just amazing, Jen!! I think your trip certainly inspired us too!
From Glory to Glory
Just got back from a Hawaiian vacation. We enjoyed the warmth of the air and water, along with the big waves, white sand, and blue water. We awoke to an early view of surfers on the ocean, and took in the entertainment along the main strip in the evenings, shopped at the International Market ...
I'm afraid I can't take credit for the pickles. They were at a country store and inspired me. I did do my first canning, though and hope to share on my next post! Smiles, Mary:)
September to October
September comes with new friends, teachers, classes, warmth from the Indian summer, a flurry of new activites, sports, bikerides, staying outdoors, taking advantage of those still warm days. The sun sets earlier and rises with splendor. It's time to start taking trips to the farm for...
Fantastic place. We've been there too!
New England
We've just come back from four days of camping in Cape Cod and a couple of nights in Boston. New England is just as charmingly beautiful as I had hoped. Simply breathtaking. Four nights is the longest camping trip I've ever done and I'm thankful that the weather was kind to us. Highlights in...
So beautifully written, so touching, meaningful and heart-felt. A true gift.
joy in the sorrow
Last May, I shared about the passing of my friend and neighbor, Sarah. But one thing I didn't tell you in that story was my last "conversation" with Sarah before she died. Just days before, she sent me several messages through twitter (of all places) curious to know if we had any interest in...

Camp Themed Birthday Party
We set up a tent, a wading pool, and Mark finished a playstructure that he was building for the kids, and voila, we have a "campsite", a "lake" and an "outdoor adventure center"! The kids love making these candy skewers at the "canteen", as well as these "smore packs" (1 scoop chocolate...
