I'm sorry, this is a little out of chronological order... Over President's Weekend my husband and I went to Chicago. We got a wonderful rate on a suite at a gorgeous new hotel, Public. It's a new Ian Schraeger and the service is just so incredibly bad, that... well, I really have no words but they are giving us the same suite for free when we go over Memorial Day Weekend (which we are only going because we have a free room). I left a message for the concierge who took three days and much insisting on my part to... Continue reading

While I was on the train yesterday I happen to sit across from a couple who I swear was the ugliest I have ever seen. She had on a wrap dress in olive green with a black print that was a blown up computerized lace print, with olive lace tights ??!?!?! and purple studded flats!?!?!?!?!??!! Oh and I cannot forget that she carried a red tote with a blue zigzag pattern on it. She had thinning wiry charcoal hair pulled back, with a face that I could not look at and yet could not look away from-leathery yet droopy skin... Continue reading

It was an incredibly beautiful day yesterday and I desperately wanted to avoid that raucous parade so I chose the edge of nowhere. The upper west side. Way out of my comfort zone and a food wasteland! I went to see the beautifully done Stephen Jones hat exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center, 4 floors of everything from antique hats (as old as the 1500's!) to wacky modern ones each in cases separated by style, or by inspiration. There was a case devoted to floral inspirations, animal inspirations, tri-cornered 18th century men's hats, 19th century top hats...In each case was... Continue reading

I went, for the first time in 15 Years, to Bemelman's Bar at the Carlyle Hotel and it was glorious. It was the very pinnacle of elegance and I felt even more so than I usually do. I had read an article in Edible Manhattan about it and a powerful craving for a gin martini. A true classic and at a true classic. It was more crowded at 6 pm than I expected though I would imagine people after work, on upper Madison Avenue go there. Or before dinner. The room was dark but for the pale wallpaper, full of... While we were in London we wanted to go to Brown's because we had, by accident, once before we started going to Paris. It was a dark and stormy night in London (I know, I know, but it really was!!) And we were tired, uncomfortable. A restaurant's doorman heard me say how hungry I was and beckoned us inside. It was so lovely, very French bistro looking with beautiful crystal chandeliers, large mirrors deeply embellished mirrors all painted cream against dark grey walls. The tables were a rich, warm, dark wood as were the chairs. We sat down and were... Continue reading

We left NY, it was pouring, we arrived in London it was pouring, and a friend who commutes to Paris said it was pouring-talk about 6 degrees of separation!!? How about 1 degree? :) Through a colleague we got a Fantastic rate on a room in a totally glam hotel, St Martin's Lane. We arrived in the rain to be disappointed with the room as it was so tiny and the bed so dominated it that one of us had to stand flattened against the wall on any side of it to let the other pass. We went downstairs to... Continue reading

You haven't heard so many of my shopping stories because I have really tried, for so long not to shop. I've fallen off the wagon before and here we go again. It's sale time, what's a girl to do???? I had accumulated a very generous amount of Bergdorf Goodman gift certificates (my very favorite kind). I knew I wouldn't go near the store until after Christmas as it is only then that everything gets marked down twice! I went late last week and wandered around the 3rd floor, picking up heaps of things. 5 fit. I rejected 3 more. I... Continue reading

I suppose this could be considered my end of year best list? There are a lot things in my life that prove luxurious for me, not in any particular order... Having a whole day with my husband... Sitting in front of the fireplace at the Gramercy Park Hotel on a chilly December morning waiting for my friend to join me for breakfast. Not setting the alarm clock!! Having all my holiday shopping done by December 1... Buying a baby's toy on the Toy's R Us website instead of having to set foot in Dante's 7 Layers of Hell-I mean the... Continue reading

Last week, it was a dark and stormy night, hence this poem... Has the City left me I no longer see the silver, the lights, the lines. The fog has it covered over It is invisible. I am comforted knowing it's there. Always. Follow up A mere 11 hours later All has returned I see it all again. Continue reading

Several months ago my glam BF asked me about going to the theatre, he really wanted to see La Bete because Joanna Lumley of Ab Fab was in it. I didn't really know anything about it but we like so many of the same things that I thought why not and we worked out getting tickets. Tonight, before the show we were just going to Starbucks but I realized I was starving so we went to a Mexican divey place and had burritos. We then walked over to the Music Box Theatre for the show and LOVED it!! It got... Continue reading

Yet another... I've mentioned before that my husband hates to go out but I love it so I never force him to go anywhere and I try to go out when he's working and I do adore when he agrees to join me. Last weekend while my glam BF was away I planned to meet 2 friends (women actually) for drinks on Sunday afternoon. I was dumb and I didn't look it up in time and at 3 when we were supposed to meet at 4 was the first time I looked up the fact that PDT didn't open until... Continue reading

Another I had never posted There used to be an elegant, glamorous restaurant (but the glamour was subtle and low key) called Voyage in the west village, and it was fairly inexpensive with lovely food-it was one of the few places I could easily get my husband to go to. One day a year or so ago, while walking by I noticed it was closed and sadly had to break the news to my husband. About 6 months ago a new restaurant called Braeburn opened up, which I promptly put on my list of places to go. For one reason... Continue reading

More that I came across that were never posted... More often than not I see really dreadful outfits on my daily trip to work. Today I saw a lady who looked lovely in a rather chic outfit (the idea of which challenges me in this horrendous weather). She had on a red cotton shift with a jacquard pattern of solid red dots (about 1-inch in diameter with circles around the dots, it was sleeveless but had interesting pleating at the edge of the armband and sewn down pleats at the waist band. She had terrific hair-very short and feathery all... Continue reading

I came across this piece in my file but realized I never posted it... I love Manhattan no matter the weather, season, time or neighborhood-it is my blood. But there is something about the early morning and dusk that I love best. Maybe it's the promise of what's to come-the day, the night that lies ahead. Maybe it's the temperature of each-early morning in its delicious chill or dusk in its sultry warmth. Maybe a combination of both. I'm waiting for a good friend to come downstairs from her apartment, by about noon today it will get too hot for... Continue reading

I can’t really explain why I haven’t posted in so long…I’m sorry, I just don’t know… I had this mostly typed and now I’m editing it and posting it. The minute I read about the Costume Institute's (at the Metropolitan Museum of Art) newest installation, Savage Beauty, Alexander McQueen, I knew I would see it (I've seen every exhibit since the Institute opened by Diana Vreeland in 1971, except 2-1) the lone men's exhibit, which my ex gay husband made me miss by insisting it closed a different day than it actually did and the super hero exhibit as I... And my sickness rears its well dressed head... I got to sneak into Barney's while dressed for work. Being on or near 57th St and Madison Ave in a suit and heels during the week always gives me much pleasure. And it's the beginning the important designer sales!! I picked out two pairs of shoes-one a Prada grey patent leather pointy pump and one a wacky glorious Miu Miu shoe that could not be described so I have helpfully supplies this photo for your viewing pleasure... Think severely cut narrow black sheath and these beauties!! Continue reading

When I F-I-N-A-L-L-Y got home that Friday afternoon (it didn’t really take any longer, just felt like it did, I thought I could swim faster than the ferry but that would have ruined my newly blow-dried hair). I grabbed my silver sequined dress and slipped it over my head. I was thinking head to toe silver. I tried on the first necklace but the rhinestones were the wrong shade for the sequins of the dress. The second necklace was the wrong shape for dress' neckline. I decided to go with just earrings so I put on these. Then I pulled... Continue reading

This is weeks overdue and I apologize-editing and work got in the way... I have been in love with Dita Von Teese since I first saw her at an Academy Awards ceremony when she was married to Marilyn Manson. At that moment I had no idea who she was but my husband knew she shopped at Barney's. I asked my ex-gay husband too and Googled her to find out she was burlesque star. I was intrigued. And in love. She is exquisite and elegant and wears couture, she's often seen in the "front row". My glam BF has known of... Continue reading

My husband and I have enjoyed staying in Kimpton Hotels for years. They're high end boutique hotels but at moderate prices. And they have animal print carpeting in the rooms!! For years however, they had not tried to enter the NY market. I was disappointed by their first NY property as it was all beige and the restaurant was just ok. Finally, last summer they opened 3 NY hotels that are true to form-full of turquoise bubbles or red spaceships but with the famous animal print carpet. I wanted to do an event in one of them desperately and last... Continue reading

The first sultry (and rain free) evening of the season and I had the incredible joy of walking through it in an evening gown and tiara. :) My glam best friend knew of my need to wear my gown and last Thursday night came the call!! Be ready on Tuesday night-it's a black tie burlesque show at a gorgeous space, called Griffin, in the meatpacking district. I slipped the heavy silk of my Ralph Lauren gown over my head, buckled my silver shoes, grabbed my vintage bag and off I went to indulge my flapper fantasies yet again. My glam... Continue reading

I do love a good speakeasy. And. I think, we all know why. Last week my glam best friend and I went to the Darby, a new speakeasy that's been on my list since it opened several months ago. And I don't need to go back. It was uneven. The ceiling was gorgeous (red with a sculpted plaid of stainless steel flat bars screwed to it with several chandeliers that were hundreds of strands of silver bugle beads hanging from a criscross circular form. On one side of each chandelier the strands were longer and then twisted into a loose... Continue reading

Finding things. Shopping my own attic so to speak. I mentioned the evening gowns I bought...I've been thinking about what jewels to wear with the black gown and 2 weeks ago my glam best friend came over for dinner and to look through my earrings with me. I wanted to wear black chandelier earrings but the ones I have were too small for the gown, they were lost, even with my hair up. He mentioned he would like crystal or rhinestone so I thought about my Dior earrings from long ago. When I was 18 and first started working at... Continue reading

I have tried so hard to stay out of stores in the past year. I still manage to spend too much money on the weekends and I'm not really sure how... but so it goes. I remember, from seeing the spring 2011 shows a year ago that brights and color blocking would be fashionable this spring. Ok, not my favorite but I can alternate a few bright dresses with my black clothes and my white things, oh and safari still seems to be strong. I also remembered big florals being shown and I remember thinking that I could buy one... Continue reading

My dinner party on Saturday night was an absolute blast! Lots of laughing and happy screaming. Now I can tell you about the near catastrophes that only my husband, my glam best friend, one other good friend, and my mother know about before. The menu: sauteed duck breast over roasted baby vegetables, then roasted turkey breast (disks that alternated with parsley mashed potatoes), a broccoli/grape tomato salad garnished with toasted matzo crumbs and fresh horseradish, matzo farfel (matzo broken into a 1/4 inch dice) with wild mushrooms (it comes out a bit like a wild mushroom risotto and the techniques... I think I've mentioned before that I really prefer cocktails to wine. I knew that one of the guests at my dinner party liked wine and was bringing it, so I put wine glasses out for everyone. I don't get to do that very often since I never really serve wine, but I sometimes fall in love with vintage wine glasses the same way I do other vintage glass pieces, so I buy them and was glad to be able to use them. I think, I'll have to use them as water glasses from now on... Back to the cocktails...... Continue reading
