Monday, CGHS Wrestler Tom Van Valkenburg signed a letter of Intent to wrestle at Fort Hays State University. HOSA members competed this week at the Virtual Spring Leadership Conference. HOSA-Future Health professionals is a high school Career and Technical Student Organization at the high school that helps prepare students for careers in healthcare fields. Mrs. McIver challenged her Creative Writing students to answer the question: How (or what) can poetry teach us about history? In the beginning of the lesson, students worked in teams to write poems about COVID-19. From there, the class examined a text and tried to find the "data" or clues that would help them determine the setting, location, and time period. Finally, students investigated a historical time period or event and wrote a poem that could be used as a teaching tool. Using Canva, students then turned their poems into posters. Continue reading

Tom Van Valkenburg qualified for the 3-2-1A State Wrestling meet in Hays as the Sub-State champion at 120 lbs. Tom became the first CGHS male wrestler to compete in the state championship match. SALINA, Kan. (WIBW) - For the second-straight year, Council Grove’s Jolie Ziegler took home first place in the 170 lb. weight class at the KSHSAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament. Ziegler topped Larned’s Ava Mull with a 4-3 decision in the championship match. She becomes the first wrestler in Council Grove history to twice win a state wrestling title. Ziegler, the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association Division II District 4 Wrestler of the Year, won her first title in the inaugural Kansas girls state tournament last year.
