At my computer. Usually in Berlin. Always with a cup of tea.
Still wondering what to do when I grow up.

We’re halfway through our four year posting in Berlin. Our basic plans at the beginning of our stay here were: Rhiannon would finish her primary and middle schooling here and be ready to join a good senior school when we moved back to the UK. There was no way the... Continue reading

Hi! I’m back for a bit of an update for anyone who still reads this blog! (If you’ve wondered where I’ve gone, please take a look here ExpatChild) Sadly, Rhiannon’s schooling in Berlin turned out to be a total disaster on so many levels.I won’t go into the full, gory... Continue reading

Hello again! Yes, I know I promised to fill in the missing years from this blog, but I really can't see it happening. Which is a massive shame. Maybe one... Continue reading

Goodness knows where this past month or so has gone! Just wanted to post to let you know I'm still around, really. It's all been a whirl of school starting and all that entails. Rhiannon returned to school at the end of August; early compared to UK schools and late... Continue reading

On Sunday we all got up at a ridiculous hour to attend Rhiannon's first gymkhana. I'd spent the previous couple of days baking cakes to sell in order to raise money for the pony club and with these safely packed in the car, we set off. Autumn is showing its... Continue reading

Well, my new venture is now up and running! I've completed a crash course in creating a blog/website using self-hosted Wordpress and I'm attempting to learn about SEO and all that sort of stuff. The header was designed by me - another learning curve, but one that I'll be able... Continue reading

Danielle, thank you for your understanding! I tracked him to his hidey hole in the house this morning where he was sleeping. I nearly hurt my back reaching around to him, but I was permitted to stroke him AND I got a lovely sleepy purr. I think he'll come around before long. But it will be in the evening when the dog isn't around to terrorise him ;-)

Taking a break from daily life is always a good move. I should do it more often! I'm referring to my recent trip to the UK here. Where technology doesn't work in the places I stay, so I'm forced to actually think! So I think. And ponder. And evaluate. Then... Continue reading

Everyone has stories of being 'punished' by their cat after they've been away from home for a while. By all accounts this passes quite quickly. But Raymi has never, ever done this to me. In the past we've been away for up to seven weeks at a time and he's... Continue reading

After just three weeks in the UK it was time to return home to Berlin. We packed the car to bursting point with all kinds of goodies such as Tetley tea bags, really nice gluten-free bread and biscuits from Waitrose and various other necessities unavailable in Germany and set off... Continue reading

Another day trip in the UK was to the New Forest Show in Hampshire. Having grown up in the country, and having many farmers as friends, I adore a good agricultural show and haven't been to one since visiting the Devon County Show when Rhiannon was still pushchair-bound. We took... Continue reading

Hi Emma! Thank you for visiting :-) Nice to 'meet' you too! This climbing place was truly incredible. Wouldn't it be great if more of them opened up around the world? Kids get so much out of this sort of thing, and it makes a perfect antidote to TV & computer games, don't you think?

Not really a reflection of a mother's mood during the summer holidays! No, this is about an indoor climbing centre in Exeter. I don't do reviews on this blog, partly because I don't belong to the group of bloggers who get asked to do them and partly because I think... Continue reading

As mentioned in my previous post, I grew up on the edge of the glorious wilderness that is Dartmoor. We always make as many visits there as our time in Devon allows. This year, the weather was appalling, but we were graced by a couple of nice days. Luckily, Dartmoor... Continue reading

I grew up in Okehampton, Devon. My playground and 'back garden' was Dartmoor, the local woods and Okehampton Castle. This was in the good old days before mobile phones and generally over-protective parenting. I and my friends would be outside from dawn 'til dusk and we spent a lot of... Continue reading

We're home in Berlin again! Our trip back to the UK was so much shorter than previous years - just three weeks instead of the six we spent there last year. This meant we couldn't meet up with so many people and I feel really bad about missing out on... Continue reading

Hello! I'm back again! Kita the Shiba Inu here to tell you more about my holiday in the UK last year. Near where we stayed with 'Nana' there are lots and lots of huge empty fields with amazing smelling pathways between them. As there was nobody around, and no roads... Continue reading

Hello, Konnichiwa, Guten Tag! My name is Kita and I'm a Japanese Shiba Inu. I actually do come from Japan too - I was born in Ibaraki and my 'mum', 'dad' and 'sister' chose to bring me home with them to Tokyo. I love them and they love me, we're... Continue reading

Some more photos from last year's UK visit. Rhiannon got to spend some time with a very special friend. First time she's seen him since her fifth birthday party! And they've always kept in touch. I'm so pleased we were able to get them together again. Adults should do this... Continue reading

By the time you read this we will be on our annual Road Trip: back to the UK. Approximately 1,000km of driving to accomplish, via all of Germany, enjoying the Autobahns, a smidgen of The Netherlands, a lot of Belgium (and trying to avoid Brussels this time!) and into France.... Continue reading

If you found this matchbox, clearly labelled, what would you think? What it says on the box! Obviously. What would you do? OK, a bit more information: this matchbox belongs to my Mum. My Mum is a very talented artist; she's won medals, including gold, at the Royal Horticultural Society... Continue reading

However, Rhiannon was placed a year above her age group in this school, so is actually moving to secondary... Continue reading
