I'm so sorry for this loss and all the losses you've suffered. It's heartbreaking to think of you having to be the grown up when you probably just wanted to fall apart. You're such a strong woman, but even strong women need a safe place to fall sometimes. I love you so much.
Grief and Growing Up
My sister Jen's father John died early this morning. He was my mom's first husband, they had my sister, they got divorced, then my mom married my dad and they had me. My sister's dad got remarried and they had four kids, none of whom are related to me. (Are you with me on the super branchy famil...

Awww -- Congratulations, Jeannine! So happy for you!
I do...
I did. I took the plunge. Tied the knot. Got hitched. I am married. Everyone asks "how does it feel?", "does it feel different?", "are you happy?" Well after two weeks and two days of wedded bliss my answer is I am happy and it does feel different. How does it feel different? Let me count the...
So sorry about the school closure -- it's a disruptive thing, no doubt. And good luck with the move!
June Gloom
One thing I'd hoped for when the clouds settled over Los Angeles during early June mornings was cool. The weather has been so wacky the last few weeks - there was an unseasonable chill in the air and a grey cast over the sky, and then WHAM! Heat wave. I knew that June Gloom would save us, b...
The communism scare is hilarious to me, but the growing bilingual learning in this country is really exciting. My kids are in a Spanish immersion program at their elementary school (here in LA) and I hope they'll take a third language when they're in high school.
I worked in China on a movie years ago and I had a glimpse of how complex the Mandarin language is, so I am in awe of these kids learning it as their second languages. Very impressive!
Thanks for the post!
Chinese School -- Not Just for Children of Uptight Chinese Immigrants Any More
If you grow up Chinese or Taiwanese American, your stories of weekend Chinese school will consist of either using strenuous and silly means to avoid attending, or tales of long Saturdays where you and dozens of other insurrection-minded kids were united in the desire to be anywhere BUT Chinese s...
Hear, hear! Get a sitter!
In Defense of the Babysitter
We all know parents who refuse to leave their kids with babysitters. Some say that they are afraid of child abuse and cite horrific stories from the news. Others worry that a sitter will not be able to handle their children: What if the baby won’t stop crying? What if the toddler has a bad dre...
Great post, Yvonne -- thanks for making me aware of what's happening to this very important program in our community. I'm donating right now!
Save Homeboy Industries
I wrote a post recently about Arizona's backward, potentially racist immigration law. In reading the comments and other blogs, I was reminded how many people associate illegal immigrants with rising gang violence regardless of whether there's any truth to that or not . Okay, if you're one of t...
Deep breaths, moms! And then get out the nail gun for the doors. I'm with you: terror!
Don't Bring Home The Digits
My nine year-old son came home from school last Friday with something grown men sometimes find impossible to get: The digits. You know, phone numbers. Notice the plural ending on the word. Not "number". He had "numbers". Girls in his class gave him their numbers, and he gave them his in return...
What an awful situation, Eunice! So sorry that happened to you! I am constantly shocked at the childish behavior parents display.
Mean Mommies
When I was young and had just come to the U.S., for some inexplicable reason I thought that all Korean people were good and if there were bad people in the world, they must be those non-Koreans. At some point, I think around ten years old, I noticed there was a section in the Korean video st...
Thanks for that, April!
Am I a Good Enough Mom?
I often wonder, like my friend Jessica, whether I am a good enough mom, and often I find myself lacking. I wish I could start over a couple times a day – giving my kids more love from the start, maybe never having introduced television into their world, never raising my voice, serving super h...
Lexi, you are too kind!

Oh, it's hard!! Keep up the patient repetition of the polite-isms. And it takes a while. But it's worth it. Polite society depends on it. (That's my mantra!)
Where Did My Miss Manners Go?
Are 3-year-old children supposed to have manners, let alone good ones? Ever since my daughter first started speaking, my husband and I have been encouraging her to say "Please," "Thank you" and "May I ..." Of course it's taken a while -- I mean, heck, she had to learn English first -- but she...
Aww, thanks, Laura! And thanks for weighing in. Parenting is not for the faint of heart, right?

I'm sorry -- did you just imply that stretch mark creams don't work? WTF???? What have I been spending my money on, then???
Happily Married?
I love my husband, but I can not in good faith call us happily married. Most day annoyingly married, frustratedly married, even tiresomely married, would be a better description. We do not walk around beaming at one another all day. When we get to take a vacation with our friends we're happy ...
Laura, we JUST NOW got hooked on Lost -- from the beginning. We started watching episodes from the first season on dvd and are now 3 episodes into Season 3. My whole family's into it -- so please don't tell me what happens!!
I can't believe I'm just getting into it when the series is ending! Thank goodness for dvds and Hulu.
'Lost' May Be Over, but It's Just the Beginning
The final season of the mega-popular TV series "Lost" has come to an end, and after six seasons of questions, answers and more questions, what fans like myself can agree on most is that there will always be nostalgia for this enigmatic show. It was definitely a game-changer, and now that it's...
Very well said, Elizabeth! And thanks!! ;-)
Just Say NO To Volunteering
What I am about to say is not very PC; so get ready: Moms, stop volunteering so much. Yes, you read that right. I am not encouraging mothers to volunteer in their schools, churches or communities. Quite the opposite: I am asking them to stop doing it. What’s wrong with me? I know you’re aski...

Just kidding! ;)
Itchy and Scratchy
I love my kids and I feel like I'm a pretty tough mom, but if my kids come home with lice I'm going to move out. I don't know what it is about lice. I know there are other bugs living on our skin, but I can't see them or feel them. I've been puked on and peed on, I've had my son rub his eye la...
Yay! Keep saying it, Donna!

You deserve a month at a spa after a silent auction -- and I hope you at least get some relaxation afterwards!

No -- let's change the world -- at least, the volunteering world! If everyone did a small amount, it would all get done and be wonderful. Let's do that!
