Hi Marty ~ I found these rules Victorian Servants had to follow. It makes interesting, if forbidding reading...there's lots more information if you google 'rules Victorian Servants'...and yet, within the restriction, there could be gained a freedom. It's strange but true..and thanks for your comment: 1. When you're spoken to, keep your hands still and always look at the person addressing you. 2. Never let your voice be heard by the ladies and gentlemen of the household, unless they have asked you a question. Even then, always speak as little as possible. 4. Never talk to a lady or a gentleman, unless to deliver a message or to ask a necessary question. 7. Never offer your opinion to your employer. 8. If you meet a higher-ranking servant in the house or on the stairs, you are to make yourself invisible as possible. Turn yourself towards the wall and look away. 9. Never say "good morning" or "good night" to your employer, except in reply to a greeting. 10. If you are required to walk with a lady or gentleman, always keep a few steps behind. I think I could have coped with most of the 'rules', but rule 8 would have really tested me xhenry

Hi Tami ~ So happy you called in again...Liz was touched that you and the others had showed such interest in Miss Brown...Liz visited her in hospital just before she passed away. Emma really was attached to Liz...and to me I guess. She was a bit of a chaperone/fairy godmother to us both. We miss her. (and she always looked like she does in the photographs) Happy love Henry

Hi Nick ~ Thanks for your visit and comment. Miss Brown was the maiden aunt of Liz's landlady in the 60's. She never wasted anything and a pan of stew, in which she threw everying was always bubbling away on the stove. She was one of the happiest and contented people Liz and I have ever met. xhenry

Hi Tami and thanks for your comment. I agree with you...today young people (I sound older than God) squander opportunities because so many of them have not found a path with a heart...or the discipline to make something out of a situation, and so they discard it and continue looking around for something they cannot identify. Maybe 'choice' requires a maturity that is lacking. It is perhaps easier to take the one path available, no matter how rocky or uphill, then muscles will be strengthened, than to also have the choice of freewheeling along a downhill gradient...and that's why so many go downhill...and never see the view from the mountain top. Oh dear, I've waxed a bit poetic here...I sound like an old Vicar delivering a sermon :) xhenry

To most people nowadays, the word ‘accept’ indicates that an offer has been considered and that a deal has been struck - “Acceptance” is quite different. There is something about the word that implies a lack of choice – and... Continue reading

Hi Marty ~ Yes it's good to have a bit of free time, which I'm using to do my Income Tax. It's due in tomorrow and I swear they'll lock me up and throw away the key if I don't submit it (I'm very behind with it all) I can believe what you say about aphorisms...I get really stunned at the thought behind each one you publish....a thought..why aphorisms only? I'd love to read a story from you..I guess it would be quite an experience. I look forward to your next set xhenry
