Alice Levitt's Best New Restaurant Dishes of 2013
Fried chicken was hot from Stowe to Montgomery Center. After last year's glut, pizza was on the wane. A couple of stinkers in smaller cities made the term "gastropub" seem a whole lot less cool. But my favorites this year triumphed over the trends. I ate so many delightful dishes... Continue reading

Alice Levitt's Best New Restaurant Dishes of 2012
In revealing my picks for best new restaurant of 2012, I already expounded on my unholy affection for the salsa-verde-drenched tocino taco at El Cortijo Taqueria Y Cantina and, well, pretty much everything at Bluebird Barbecue. Clearly, those are a couple of the best things I ate this year. But... Continue reading

City Market to Open Second Greater-Burlington Location
If you were part of a November exit study at City Market, you may recall staff members asking where you live. You might have wondered if the co-op was planning to follow you home. The answer is yes, sort of.... Continue reading

Hi Lois,
Redstone Unlimited Dining as a whole is not kosher. Just Vermont Kosher, a separate kitchen in the building. Here's my story about that unique element of UVM's dining program: http://www.7dvt.com/2011vermont-kosher
Alice Eats: Redstone Unlimited Dining
438 South Prospect Street, Burlington, 656-4664 This week, my feature in Seven Days focuses on Vermont Kosher, the new kitchen that provides food for observant Jewish students around the University of Vermont. Sunday through Thursday, students and community members alike can grab a Middle Easte...
@Jack, I've had the Mediterranean plate at Duino. I still prefer the texture of the falafel at Ahili Baba's. Can't get enough of those crispy whole chickpeas!
Alice Eats: Donny's NY Pizza & Sports Bar
22 Main Street, Winooski, 802-655-7888 There's Vermont pizza, then there's New York pizza. For those of us from the New York area, this difference is life and death. The puffy crusts and too-sweet sauces of most Vermont pizzerias might taste just fine, but to us, they're not really pizza. Gi...
Video: Nectar's Grilled Cheese Mania
Have you ever made a grilled cheese with an iron? Jason Gelrud, co-owner of Nectar's assures me he has not. Gelrud takes grilled cheese seriously. After tasting the bulk of Nectar's special grilled cheese menu, so do I. Watch as... Continue reading

Alice Eats: Our House
36 Main Street, Winooski 802-497-1884 I have a big mouth. It's rare that I stay mum on a place just because I'm afraid of one day not getting in. Right now, I'm feeling guilty. On Sundays, while you're still waiting... Continue reading

Bite Club TV: The Great Brisket Bake-Off
I don't know if I've ever had more fun making a video than I did on this one. Other than bar mitzvahs, I hadn't been to temple since I was seven. At my previous temple visit, the rabbi, whom folks... Continue reading

Alice Eats: Yummy Chinese Restaurant
88 Heineberg Drive, Colchester, 802-860-2828 When Yummy Chinese Restaurant opened in the former Ming's space in Colchester, I doubt if even the owners thought they'd be getting five-star reviews. Somehow, though the tiny eatery has wound up on the 7... Continue reading

@Kate&Jim: The Millbrook Inn is on my list of potential stories. I can't wait to try it!
@Rachel: My boyfriend really loves Allo Inde (http://www.alloinde.com/), so we often go there. It's not my favorite, I find it expensive for its quality.
My best Indian meal in Montréal was at Bombay Mahal (www.restaurantbombaymahal.com) when it used to be on Rue Crescent. I haven't tried it in its new Jean-Talon Ouest location, but it used to be super-cheap with a really diverse menu, prepared very much to my tastes.
Alice Eats: Karma Indian Restaurant
334 Cornelia Street, Plattsburgh, NY, 518-561-8301 My earliest memory is eating tandoori chicken back in New York. On Facebook, I list Indian buffets as my religion. Needless to say, living in Northern Vermont has been difficult for me. I learned early on to stay away from the bland, greasy In...
Hi Meghan! Actually, I was getting my pre-show food at North End Rotisserie. Here's my formal word on that little gem: http://7d.blogs.com/blurt/2010/09/alice-eats-north-end-rotisserie.html
As you can see, I now like it even better than I did then. And I think you're wrong. The vegetarians wanted that crispy chicken more than anyone.
Alice Eats: Rotisserie Restaurant
1355 Williston Road, South Burlington, 802-658-1838 Usually I'm the one telling my co-workers about great restaurant deals. Not this time. I'm giving credit for this particular discovery to Robyn Birgisson, an account executive here at Seven Days. A few months ago, I tried the Rotisserie for t...
I would love to hear your recommendations for Mexican in Montréal, Dan. Would you mind sharing?
Alice Eats: Miguel's on Main
30 Main Street, Burlington 802-658-9000 Vermont will never be like California or Texas. There are not a lot of Mexicans here, therefore, there's not a lot of authentic Mexican food. Or, for that matter, any authentic Mexican food. I still get misty when I drive Shelburne Road and remember the e...
One of the best meals I ever had was here: http://www.sonarestaurant.com/menu.php.
Here's the link to my review: http://aliceeats.com/blog/?p=61
If you look past the big names, it's not so hard.
Alice Eats: Buono Appetito Italian Restaurant
3182 Shelburne Road, Shelburne, 802-985-2232 Not every business in the Vermont Fresh Network is fine dining. Scouring the list of restaurants that are members of the localvore association, I came across numerous joints that one might never guess would focus on serving local produce. Buono Appeti...
Just a reminder to Gill: The point of "Alice Eats" is indeed bargain-hunting. My goal is to get a meal for two for less than $35. I was expecting to find one at a family red sauce restaurant and was disappointed in that search.
I also think it's important to point out that restaurants that use some local ingredients do not necessarily use all local ingredients. I am fairly certain the chicken was not local, or necessarily farmed ethically. If that is the case, $24 is quite a markup.
I am more than happy to pay high prices if there are reasons, either in preparation or ingredients, for doing so. I am definitely not above a $100 tasting in a big city if the meal is exquisite and unique. Buono's, while good, is neither.

I have to admit, I didn't expect an attack for a review of rotisserie chicken and salad. It's okay if you don't like me, but please don't make assumptions about the restaurants I review because of that.
Once again, I welcome any restaurant recommendations that you may find less objectionable. Potential Alice Eats reviews should be little-written-about spots at which folks can get dinner for two for $30 or less.
Alice Eats: Charlie's Rotisserie and Grill
1160 Williston Road, South Burlington 802-862-1211 We all know the story — friends who have known each other for a decade suddenly realize it's love. While I've always enjoyed what I've had with Charlie's (still known as Chicken Charlie's to most of us), we recently took it to the next level. An...

Just wanted to update BBQ fans. Though I Que did not reign supreme at the Harpoon Championship, I just learned that they were indeed named New England BBQ Society Team of the Year 2010! Congrats to the whole team!

Hi all,
First of all, I'd like to thank you for reading and taking the time to respond to Alice Eats! The point of the weekly post is to bring attention to a local business that is affordable (I try to stay under $30 for two) and might not normally get ink in the paper. They are usually wholehearted recommendations, but not always. In the case of QTee's, I do genuinely enjoy the food, and wanted to let people know that if they're in search of a fast food fix, it's a worthwhile one.
I am not advising that people eat like this every day. I generally eat a meal there once a season. Personally, I think the point of fast food is that it's a little gross, and that's okay once in a while. If you think it's "nastiness," that's okay, too. I don't intend every single review to be helpful to every single reader. Tastes simply vary too much.
I imagine that most negative posters have not actually tried QTee's. Bashing a local business that has been in one Burlington family since 1959 just seems mean. This is their livelihood and they work hard. You may choose not to eat their factory farmed meats, but for the business to survive, please don't judge others who do.
That said, I am always on the hunt for new Alice Eats subjects. If you have relatively unknown restaurants that you'd like to recommend I would be thrilled to hear! Who knows, you could clue me in to a new favorite!
Alice Eats: QTee's
237 North Winooski Avenue, Burlington 658-3668 I didn't think I'd have to do this, but apparently I do: There are people out there who still don't know about QTee's. Whenever I explain where 99 Asian Market is — right across the street from QTee's — it seems people don't know what I'm talkin...
You go, Val!
Alice Eats: Val's Wild Tomato
135 East Allen Street, Winooski 861-9453 There are things I have to check off my list at the Champlain Valley Fair each year. I always have to bring home at least one caramel apple (no nuts, please), hit the Elk's Club for a fried chicken dinner and grab some Pork Boners at Fat Daddy's. Thes...
We have discussed doing a "Best Vegetarian" feature one day, but honestly, the options are so expansive, it's a little overwhelming! For now, if you want to be sure there will be things you can eat on a menu, have a look at 7 Nights and see if we have that particular restaurant listed as Veggie or Vegan-Friendly.
Alice Levitt's Best New Restaurant Dishes of 2009
It's that time of year, the time when I'm seeing casual acquaintances and making new ones, all of whom want to know where I'm eating these days. It's too big a question to take lightly. That's why, for your benefit, I have once again compiled the absolute best new dishes to grace our fair state...
Hi Dani,
Your co-worker missed the Danica Patrick, a veggie and soy burger topped with sauteed mushrooms. I agree, though, Burlington restaurants should have more than one veggie option.
Best Bites: Norm's Grill
1127 North Avenue, Burlington 862-4300 It's a pet-peeve of mine that most spots don't allow customers to try more than one flavor of wings in a moderately sized order. Norm's Triple Crown ($8.99) gave me the opportunity to taste three of the five varieties of chubby chicken parts on the menu. ...
They do indeed. It's www.wingsover.com. You're going to love it!
Best Bites: Wings Over Burlington
150 Dorset Street, South Burlington 863-9464 Sometimes I'm craving fried chicken. Other times it's ribs. More often than not, it's both. That's when I head to Wings Over Burlington. It's not just the fact that I can get a half rack of ribs, half a pound of chicken tenders and fries for $14.99....
You could always get it without the butter.
Best Bites: 99 Asian Market
242 North Winooski Avenue, Burlington 865-0226 It's not often that I can say a restaurant opening has changed my quality of life, but since 99 Asian Market began serving prepared food a month ago, I have had more spring in my step. I can finally get a banh mi, made fresh just for me (right). ...
Ask and you shall receive! Check out my new personal commissary, 99 Asian Market. They make banh mi to order for $3 a pop. They also have my favorite cha gio in town. Haven't tried the pho or bun yet, but will be sure to report back when I do.
Best Bites: PK Cafe
186 College Parkway, Colchester 655-6565 Burlingtonians tend to come in factions. You’re either a Sandwich Company person, or you’re a Red Onion person. Not surprisingly, I am neither. I enjoy — even occasionally crave — grinders from the aforementioned eateries, but usually when I’m thinking me...
