I was there ... and your photos are amazingly representative — of a swirl of festivities our family counts as an annual highlight, too. Thanks so for sharing. Ah, those swings...
once a year
At the Yarmouth Clam Festival on a hot summer night. An honest-to-goodness old-fashioned parade that's always a family favorite. And followed by a little bit of once-a-year carnival goodness with dear friends...well, it really was just the silly that we ne...
Hi David. Yup, it is. And ours are going great guns. I think we're up to a dozen or more bars of new comb now. And the bees are flitting over every blossom I see. They are amazing! How about you... been keeping bees for long?
Honeybees, welcome home.
They came a week ago—all 10,000 of them—in a screened box. Their queen was hiding in plain sight, inside a small screened box of her own. Michael poured our new honeybees into their new top bar beehive on Sunday. And by Thursday, they had eaten through the candy plug to release her, and get...
Sarah, thanks so much for writing! You're right; it's a small, small world we share. I'll look for your husband's book. Meantime, let's keep in touch. I LOVE Bella Luna, and all the work you're doing to support families like ours. (Btw, your picture is beautiful... the ocean must suit you!)
The tractor man cometh.
Meet Andy. Andy is the "tractor man" of my dreams. He has helped friends carve out, rototill and maintain farms, fields and gardens of all sizes. I've heard how fast he works, and how many things he can do in no time. For more than a year now, I've had a grand plan in mind for our hillside p...

Thanks for the note, Adrian. We do the same ... haul in several loads and stack them (beautifully) beside the stove. It sure beats having to head outside to get more when you're feeling chilly inside.
stacking wood
Woodstacking lends itself to folksy phrases (which I'll translate later). My favorite is the old dandy, "stack it loose enough for a mouse to run through, but not for the cat to follow." Perhaps it's because every step of the way—from cutting the timber, to splitting it, to hauling it, and,...
love this. so much.
Easy Peasy Gardening Apron
A gardening apron that takes one big scrap, one long skinny scrap, and an old pair of jeans and whips them into a divine little ditty for digging in the dirt. You can do it. (There's lots of very satisfying straight line sewing ahead of you.) STEP #1: Gather up your goods. You need j...
Wowza! What a wonderful selection and generous giveaway! Scraps, fabric and free are three of my favorite words. I'm going to your store right now...
Give Away Day!! Yay!!
Yay! It's time for Give Away Day!! A huge thanks to Beth at Sew Mama Sew for organizing this fun day twice a year! Run over to her blog and look at the whole list of participants and join in. You might end up with some fun goodies! And don't give me that "I never win anything" whine because ...
Thanks much for the handy tip, Aaron. A brine would be a lot less clunky to place the jars into, too. I love it when science and ice cream collide!
(really) handmade ice cream
I've been known to eat a fair bit of ice cream. So much, in fact, I was shocked to realize sometime in high school that a pint of coffee Häagen-Dazs was not created solely for me, to finish in one sitting. After all, it took a while for the solid mass to soften just enough that a spoon coul...
