Beautifully written and spot on. Great post.
Sarah Palin, You're a Bad Mom
Sarah Palin, you're a bad mom and a bad example. I don't take this statement lightly and I'm not going to make this about political affiliations. This conversation is much more important than our government preferences. We can be civil about that discussion. This isn't about female power and s...
I've only got a few weeks before I hit 4.0. so I suppose I'd better start shopping for my hot pants now, right?
40 - High Time to Start Living Out Loud
Three months and four days from today, I will officially cross into a brand new decade. Not that I’m counting (or obsessing). I’ve been told by women-in-the-know that 40s are the best. I’m told that I’ll become magically transformed where I am at peace – comfortable in my own skin and con...

Great post. My daughter would love your son--all veggies, no meat. I'm inspired--we're going to try broccoli in the garden this year.
Yay! It's Broccoli!
My brother, who is an awesome uncle, once bought my son a t-shirt with a head of broccoli on it. The broccoli head had a smiley face on it and it read, "Yay! It's broccoli!" Whether the t-shirt was originally created as a joke about the old cliche that kids don't like their veggies, or as a pl...
Nicely put. I agree 100%...I've only run into problems now that they start really wanting those darn activities.
Anti-overscheduled parenting
If there were such a phrase as "anti-overscheduled parenting" it would describe my method of parenting. I am a firm believer that packing in too many activities in your child's day leaves little or no room for the most important activity: free play. I must admit, one of the reasons I don't sig...
Our mother's did not wear skinny jeans...! Your body will snap back, just give it time and try to enjoy this freeby time--you've got the best excuse there is.
Are You There Body? It's Me, Brie.
Well, it’s official. I am not a super model. And while the better part of me would go up to Heidi Klum if I saw her and tell her that she is amazing for being able to get back on the runway two months after having a kid, the bigger part of me would break her skinny ass in half. I mean, all ...
Eden this is beautifully put, and I do hope that writing has given some small measure of peace. I haven't been able to do it yet.
Ask When
This is incredibly sad for me to write. I hope writing about it helps. My brother's baby stopped breathing and died in his sleep, almost two weeks ago. We were all in terrible shock. Sawyer was a sweet, beautiful little thing, only a month-and-a-half old. We'd just Skyped with my brother ...
Great post. I'm with the teacher--remind him in middle school that you are the mom who knows all (never mind the facebook part.)
Everything I Need to Know I Learn on Facebook
As you may or may not remember, at the end of December I was crying in my hot chocolate about a proposed big box store in our mountain town. I'm happy to report that the proposal was rejected by town voters. So no big box for our town. For now. I'm sure they'll be back, but that's a story ...
If your husband will build you and office AND dust when it's completed you have all you need for the holidays and more!
Construction: What Every Woman Wants for Christmas
Look! Up in the sky! What is that? Santa and his sleigh? No, it's my husband on a ladder, with power tools and sheets of drywall, making our house a construction zone. . .right in the middle of the holidays. Eeek! We've been talking about turning our two-story foyer into a one-story entry ...
I just took my 8 year old to her first orthodontist appointment...all the while screaming (in my head) I'M TOO YOUNG TO HAVE A KID HERE!
I still wear my retainer at night
I had braces for three and a half years. Three and a half torturous, awkward, often painful, but very necessary years. It began as a junior in high school and finally ended, at my insistence, the summer before my sophomore year at BYU. There was major surgery involved, more orthodontic visit...
This is sweet, and sounds a little like our neighborhood too. No McMansions with jumbo-sized candy bars, but jammed packed with good neighbors.
Remembering Our Seniors on Halloween Night
Walking in the glow of the full moon, I could hear my daughter and her friend giggle and laugh as they rang the doorbell of the brick ranch. I was out with my neighbor on the second phase of trick or treating with our two older daughters. We knew the house our girls approached very well and pr...
More Denise More! I need details. What do you put in the sections? How is it different than a lunch box? Why don't you need the plastic baggies (sounds like a dream to me!)
Bento Lunches, Recipe For Healthy & Happy Family?
Starting in August, my morning routine included the new task of packing lunch for my full time schoolgirl. To top off the packing lunches, we need to be ready to go by 7:35 to get to school on time. Now this may seem late for some of you, but over the past few years we've been an afternoon pres...
We are in the same boat. I thought I'd always opt for neighborhood school (which is great) but there are so many options with magnets and charters, how do I know, really know, what the best is for my kid? Do you ever really know?
The Deal with School Selection
When I was a kid, going to school was easy. You lived in a neighborhood and you went to a school you could walk to, and parents could be reasonably sure that their kids were learning what they needed to know in a safe, secure place. That gives you an idea of how old I am. Those days are long go...
You are so making the right choice. I chose VBAC b/c the risks of natural birth are much LOWER than surgery, even planned, when you take into consideration the drugs and interventions that contribute to uterine rupture. Congrats on doing your research, and good luck to you. (My VBAC baby came flying into the world, quick and easy--especially when compared to my c-section.)
I want a VBAC, please support me
My second child is due in about three and a half months and I want to have a VBAC, a vaginal birth after cesarean. My son was born two years ago via a necessary c-section because after meconium-laden-broken-water and hours of pitocin I never dilated beyond 2 centimeters and he never got into ...
I applaud you, mama bear, for defending your cub and having the nice police man show up to get your back. Well done mama!
Don't Poke the Bear
Yesterday, my eleven year old son arrived home from school later than usual and in tears. Actually, he was more than just in tears, he was sobbing, sobbing so hard that it was difficult to understand what he was saying and, the story that he told me once I finally managed to get him calmed dow...
How true it is, how true it is!
My Kids Are Annoying Me
Please tell me I am not the only mother being driven crazy by her own kids. Mama, mama, did you see my drawing, mama? Do you like it, mama? Mama, mama, I made my own bed, come see, mama. Mama, mama, I ate all of my lunch. Isn't that good mama? Mama mama mama mama.... It's enough to make me ...
Terrific post! So tell us, is there another way to become Queen?
Back to the Rat Race
This evening, on the way home from work/school/daycare, my four-year-old daughter Helen leaned back in her car seat and kicked the back of the passenger seat. “When I grow up, I don’t want to have ANY job,” she announced. “Do I HAVE to have a job?” Good effing question, I thought, as I steer...
My daughter also turns 6 this week, and our family is also mostly in NY. Lucky her this year Grandma and Grandpa are coming in, and we are going old school--backyard, pinata, cupcakes, limbo, etc. Lucky me I dodged the party bullet. (Our fave place (cheap!) for parties so far: Sunflower Farm in Longmont.)
Party, Party, Party, Am I Up For A Party?
As the month of September draws near, the arrival of my daughter's birthday gets closer and closer. She'll be turning six years old and once again I was faced with the birthday party dilemma. Our close family lives in upstate New York, so having a family party isn't really an option. We have...
Wonderful post. We are trying to figure out how to nurture our 3rd grade girl's love for all things science and invention before she figures out that it's not a "girl thing."
Girls and science
Across the country, children are putting their new pencils, lunchboxes, and gluesticks to work as they re-enter the classroom for the year. But in our district in the Philadelphia suburbs, we still have a week to go until we hear that first school bell. Plenty of time to reminisce and think ...
Great piece, and great take on a well-intentioned, if bizarre event.
Peace, Love and Boob Imprints
After spending most of my life in the Midwest -- where women my age make green bean casserole and wear sensible shoes -- it's so darn fun to live in Boulder -- where you never know what your sister citizens are going to do next. Last week, they really outdid themselves when a group of about 25...
I hope you have a good year, and congrats on getting her in.
Colorado has got to make education a priority. We spend less per pupil than Alabama, and the stress is showing in the classrooms. My daughter had 28 kids in her 2nd grade class in BVSD--an unacceptable learning environment unless your kid is the squeakiest wheel. High test scores are NOT the same as a good education.
A Boulder Valley School District Open Enrollment Tale
Over six years ago when my husband and I purchased our house, we saw it as a short term investment in our future. We bought within our means, not above our means even though ARM and interest only mortgages were the norm. We also knew it was a starter home, I imagined moving within five years. ...
Your trip sounds wonderful. We leave tomorrow for our first ever family road trip. We're trying it old school, no DVDs, just a whole lot of singing and bonding time. Wish me luck!
Bucket list 101
You know what a "bucket list" is right? The list of things you really want to do before you die? I didn't realize I had one until I started planning my family road trip for this Summer. We're a road tripping family, and I have to say, it's a way to experience your family in a way you just c...
Beautifully written. Now we need to make sure that the remaining ridiculous barriers come tumbling down.
If It Were Up To "God", I Wouldn't Be Married Right Now
June 12, 2009 will mark the 42 anniversary of the Loving vs. Virginia Supreme Court case that legalized, throughout the country, the marriage between interracial couples. My family and I will be there joining in on the celebrations in NYC this coming Sunday. I spoke to my husband about the e...
Very cute post.
I often find myself thinking of those pioneer women. Tough as nails and a hard life for sure, but they didn't have all this suburban drama to juggle, no playdates to schedule and practices to carpool to, nothing but kill and harvest and sew and cook. Ok, so maybe that doesn't sound so easy...
Pregnant and Wimpy
I have come to the conclusion that I am a total pregnancy wimp. I'm a whiner. I'm weak. I give into my cravings and I microwave dinner and drive my son to the park that's a mile from our house. Through it all, I complain to my husband about my shrinking stomach, aching back, and exhaustio...
A slice of humble pie is small price for the huge piece of self-awareness. Good for you. Thanks for all you do to help.
There's more than one way to feed the hungry
I can be a self-righteous jerk sometimes -- one of those people who plants herself at the center of the universe where she can sit in judgment of all who orbit around her. Suffice to say, it's not a quality I'm particularly proud of. Over the years, I've learned to keep my ugly side under wrap...
