After four days of skiing around and doing setup (ie: spud barring bamboo into the ground for ropelines), the King opened today to the public on lanes 4 and 7. We have about 20 inches of man-made snow down on the lower mountain and about 24 up high (all natural). We actually are a bit ahead compared to prior seasons, and we should have Rafferty area open next Saturday and the summit by the middle of the month. And so it begins.... Continue reading

Yesterday afternoon I rode up Cache Creek and it was still pretty soft, despite being groomed a few days ago and having lots of foot traffic on it. Maybe after this next pulse of snow it will be better. Continue reading

The last several days have been pleasant but BAC at night, which is good. The King is looking good to open soon after a huge push to make snow. Just below freezing as I write this and it is mostly clear so the temps should drop low enough to fire the guns up again. Going to be on skis soon. Continue reading

Hopefully, dear readers, you are at home with your loved ones stuffing your faces with great food and booze. Loosen your belts and pass out in front of the idiot box. Hopefully you were able to get out and ski a bit. Not yet here at the Kaiser but Grand Targhee and the Village are open. Continue reading

I got the chance last Sunday to ride the inner park road up to Jenny Lake in a couple inches of snow and it was pretty fun. First person to ride the Jenny Lake one-way in the snow (about 6 inches deep so a lot of work). We got a... Continue reading

When I go out to take some photos I refuse to say "expedition" because that is ridiculous. I'm just going out for some photos. Anyway, I hoped to go out today but it is overcast and murky, so photos wouldn't be any good. Still have plans for something in the next few weeks, just in time for Christmas. Stay tuned. The Kaiser is making snow for a huge snowmobile race in two weeks and for their general opening but we had a thaw this weekend so looks like sometime after Thanksgiving to get on skis. Oh well. Continue reading

As part of the 96 Project I as going through my beers and finding ones to try. Obviously I can't drink it all so I am going to have a party. I'm calling it the Killer Whales Party, whales being those special beers you always hear about and read about... Continue reading

I hope folks have been enjoying the photos, and the picture effects. I was reading online on a thread about how a person was asking how to get rid of the picture effects from his new Sony camera, and the general consensus was once the camera took a photo with a picture effect, you couldn't change it. Poor guy "lost" bunch of photos. The thread also said the easier thing to do is take photos in a normal mode and then add effects on the computer. That way you can save the original and still have it as a backup.... Continue reading

That is sticking, that is. We have had a few snow showers so far this fall but nothing has stuck yet. Not today. I think this will stick for a while but it came in warm so it was wet and semi-melted as the snow hit the ground and as... Continue reading

I have been on Redbubble for a few years selling some ski area maps and a few other items. I just uploaded about ten or so more photos taken in Grand Teton National Park so feel free to check them out. My storefront is Fungus50. Check it out and spend lots. Continue reading

We had our medical and lift-evac training this past weekend at Snow King so it was a good chance to get rid of some beer. Got rid of about two cases. Only 94 or so more to go. They were Full Sail Session export and fest ales. Held up well... Continue reading

Just got done with our annual medical and lift-evac training this past weekend, and only two more weekends to blow. Next Saturday our paid staff are having a refresher, and a week after that we are having a medical evaluation for some patrol candidates. Can't wait to be on snow. Gaining weight in the off season for sure. Continue reading

Following up on my last couple photo trips, here are more photos. Taken with the "toy miniture" picture effect. Somewhat weird but different. Illustration mid picture effect. Not too hideous. Watercolor picture effect. Meeh. Toy camera picture effect. Here is an example of normal "landscape" settings and the "pop color" picture effect settings. Looking at Catholic Bay of Jackson Lake. "Landscape" setting of Sony. "Pop Color" picture effect. Dramatic, no? Last one for this post. "HDR Painting Mid" picture effect. I think it was taken with the HDR effect. Can't remember. Still pretty. Continue reading

At this time of year I try and get out for some photography in the mornings, especially up to Grand Teton. It is quiet up there, the roads are still open, and you can get places easily. A bit harder after November 1 because the inner park road between Bradley/Taggart Lakes parking area and Signal Mountain Lodge is closed to cars. This is 16 miles long and I can still ride a bike on it until the snow really flies. The park service does groom this road but they don't allow bikes to access it, not even fatbikes. Kind of... I have had a pair of 45North tires on one fat bike (a Skookum) set up as tubless for a few years now. I love the rims and wheels (HED setup) but have been underwhelmed by the Flowbeist. This is the second one to suffer a leak that the sealant... Continue reading

Now where have we heard that phrase? Some tv show I think...dunno. Anyway, it is coming. Got a mountain bike ride in yesterday and it was great: dry dirt, uncrowded trails, and warm temps (in the low 60s). Today: snow showers and partly cloudy. Hoping it is somewhat nice tomorrow; hoping for a few more photography excursions to the park before the inner park road closes November 1. Couple photos from recent trips: early morning shot of Teewinot from Jenny Lake. Cathedral Group of the Tetons in clouds. Not super dramatic but I like seeing clouds in photos. Too many... Some of you may know that I had worked for a local newspaper for many years in their distribution department. Kind of funny because I was the distribution department. I was a glorified paperboy for 14 years. I can't knock it in hindsight because the pay was pretty darn good and the hours not bad. I had to work one very long day and a few hours here and there over the course of the week. The job only started to become a pain in the ass in the spring of 2018 when I had to really work hard to... This year the precarious state of my mother's health finally hit me and it is not good long term. She says she isn't quite ready to go this year (and I think she means through the spring and summer) but after that she's ready to move on. Given the state of my finances, I know I can't stay in my current abode six months past her death, and in all likelihood won't be able to make it in Jackson. So, a long term project is to declutter and simplify my life. I need to be more mobile and I have... Continue reading

No, not "whoof" as in "bark"; "whoof" as in loudly sighing mixed with mild disbelief and sinking anticipation of lots of work ahead. Like realizing you have to rake off the leaves on your lawn before winter, it is raining, and you have a three acre lawn. What brings on... Continue reading

I stopped blogging a while back (got busy with life I guess) and decided to get back on the horse. Since my last post on this blog, we had an eclipse, I went to the Maldives with a side trip to Istanbul, I worked all winter (and it was a somewhat crappy winter with not a lot of snow but no excitement like the previous one), went to France to ski, worked all summer on bike tours, tried to do a bike tour of Yellowstone this past October, and went to Fruita Colorado to mountain bike for a week in... Summer is upon Jackson Hole and it is flying by fast. Mid-July already and I struggle to think what I have done fun this year. Couple longer bike rides and such but nothing of note. Last year at this time I was getting ready to fly over to the Tour De France for a week. Looking back at it I should have stayed at home. Oh well. Hot as fuck in Jackson in the afternoons. Looks like the mid 80s today with humidity in the low teens. And I have an afternoon tour. Lobster anyone? Things are busy now but... Continue reading

Bought a new wheelset from Industry Nine this winter - full carbon rims and colorful anodized spokes for my Fatback Skookum - and got them set up tubeless this spring. I am running tires from 45North with a FloBiest up front and a Dunderbiest in the rear. I used them... Continue reading
