So we've been slowly receiving shipments of items handpicked and designed by CaraMiya and Daniel while they were in India this summer. While I might miss the suspense and drama of receiving a 40 foot container all at once, it's so nice to give each new arrival the attention and appreciation it's due...and spread out the impact on my bank account. It's kindof like Christmas once a month instead of just once a year. Our latest shipment is all hand block printed cottons--one of my favorite things in the world. The patterns on all of these cottons are made by... Continue reading

By: Morgan Hawkins For those of you who are a part of the Maui community or have visited the North Shore in the past six months, you may have seen striking photographs from the Omo Valley of Ethiopia taken by Indigo's owner, Daniel Sullivan. Walking into Cafe Mambo, back in the early Spring, was like stepping through a portal, which swept guests away to another part of the world. For a month, Daniel's photographs of tribesmen and women, exotically painted and adorned in beads made from raw, natural materials, decorated the cafe's festively painted walls. Daniel's Omo Valley collection is... Continue reading

By: Morgan Hawkins It's finally here! The long-awaited container from India has arrived with one-of- a-kind home furnishings and textile designs by Indigo's owners, Daniel Sullivan and Cara Miya Davies-Reid. Indigo is blooming with explosive color; the colors and textures will dazzle your senses and help preserve the memory of spring and summer through the coming seasons. Some of the most impressive quilts, furnishings and accessories have been created from antique, cotton, Bengali quilts. Daniel sorted through a thousand antique quilts from Northern India to bring you this stunning collection. The quilts, pictured below, were block printed with natural dyes... Continue reading

By: Morgan Hawkins At the beginning of every fashion season many of us fix our gaze on the catwalk and tune into HGTV in anticipation. Like meteorologists who keep their eyes to the sky, we watch and wait, eager to adapt to the ever changing forecast. Not only our bodies, but also our homes transform into canvases awaiting new chic color combos and the latest imported textiles. In attempt to prepare for the new trends, we find ourselves picking up one of the many home decor magazines just to glimpse at what the season will bring. While flipping through the... By: Morgan Hawkins Maybe some of you have noticed the dangling, swaying, colorful appendages now embellishing the latest spring fashions. If you haven’t seen it yet, just imagine the image from one of my favorite classic movies, “Gone with the Wind,” of Scarlett O’Hara visiting Rhett Butler in a Union jail. For those of you who haven’t seen the movie in a while or didn’t watch it as frequently as I did when I was a little girl, here’s an excerpt that should jog your memory. Picture Scarlett, the queen of vanity, disguising her destitution by creating the most stunning,... Continue reading

Let us celebrate the strength, perseverance, intellect and compassion of the beautiful women throughout history who have paved the way for us today. International Women’s Day, recognized as a holiday in many countries, is a day to commemorate suffragettes and visionaries: those who, when faced with injustice, sought equality for all. Not only is it important to recognize the ladies who’ve made history, but also let us celebrate the strong women in our families and communities who don’t always receive the recognition they deserve. I woke up this morning thinking about the trip Daniel is embarking on in the morning. While he is traveling through Northern India to collect and put in to production goods for Indigo, his next stop will be Ethiopia to photograph the tribes of the Omo River Valley. Karo Warriors, Omo River Region, Ethiopia Charles Roffey The Omo River Valley is in the southwestern region of Ethiopia and is the home of tribes living very much the same way they have for hundreds of years. Their way of life is being threatened by the construction of a hydroelectric dam that... Continue reading

This morning I found a very well written op-ed piece in the New York Times that gives a very humanistic view of the tragedy that is unfolding there. The author, Daniyal Mueenuddin is a mango farmer (and acclaimed short story author) from Pakistan. Read the article here The author makes the point that unlike other recent environmental disasters, there's not a huge death toll. However, hundreds of thousands of people are left without any possessions, cultivated land, or prospect of income until a possible sugar cane harvest next October. These are some photos Daniel took in Waziristan. Every picture I've... Continue reading

My son Tristan and I just got back from camping at Wai'anapanapa State Parkin Hana. We stayed at the cabins there which were great, exactly what you would want out of a state park cabin, rustic, isolated, overlooking the ocean. They even had hot water, a fridge, a burner and pots and pans. Continue reading

There's a great article in the New York Times today about a woman practicing traditional handicraft while making a positive impact on her own life as well as her family's. Please read the article here. I really love the end where she starts joking about her husband being her secretary. It's amazing how she's been able to change her circumstances selling an art form that's centuries old. While most of the "shisha" or mirror work textiles we carry in the store are antique, it is nice to see that there is an effort to continue such a beautiful and intricate... Continue reading

A clear night in Maui is unforgettable. It makes you remember that you are standing on one of the most isolated island chains in the world. Tonight was one of those nights, and after putting my daughter Evie to bed, I took my tripod out into the yard and took some celestial photographs of the night. Enjoy. Continue reading

Makawao Upcountry Rodeo This weekend was 55th annual Makawao Rodeo. When the rain cleared and the sun came out it proved for a memorable night upcountry. Every year around the fourth of July dozens of cowboys from around the Hawaiian Islands gather to compete in bull riding, roping and bronco riding. Here are some photos I took, from this years events. Continue reading

CaraMiya recently got busy on some beautiful old silk saris and came up with an awesome summer dress. Each one is completely one of a kind, using old silks in different lengths with silk ribbon that can be pulled on each side. The dresses are versatile and can be worn as dresses or shirts, depending on how tightly you pull the ribbons. On Saturday, we're bringing them all in and celebrating with some champagne from 4-6pm. The dresses are $128 each and look super cute on everyone I've seen try it on. Then, they just never take it off. Perfect... Continue reading

I was flipping through Australia Vogue Living this morning and this tiny little blurb caught my eye. The 200 year old Barcaldine Tree of Knowledge, located in a small town in Queensland, is considered the birthplace of the Australian Labor Party. The tree was poisoned in 2006 in an act of vandalism, and the dead trunk is all that remains. For the entire story, click here. The photo that caught my eye was this one. picture courtesy of ABC news Australia (http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200905/r366237_1696391.jpg) An architecture firm, M3architecture, in association with Brian Hooper Architect, designed the memorial for the tree of knowledge... Rose here. I generally spend too much time online looking over design websites, other store websites, and other blogs. (NEVER celebrity gossip or clothing websites --NEVER) So through all of my well justified time online, I have come across a few images lately that show that this little shop on this little island can offer items sought after around the world. http://www.livingetc.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=6106 Living Etc. is an interior decor magazine from England. I love their website because there's tons of photos in their online gallery that I linked above. This photo looks like it was taken at Indigo (except for the... Continue reading
