Thanks Vineca! I really enjoyed Jo-Anne McArthur's list too: so thoughtful, eclectic and compassionate!

It's Earth Month 2016 and the time has come to take seriously our impact on the planet. Toronto Public Library is happy to present the best of our collections on environmental education, geared to children, teens and adults. Watch for environmental displays in branches across the city and pick up... Continue reading

Today is World Animal Day, originally designated as a day to highlight the plight of endangered species, although it is now used to celebrate all the world’s animals. Oct 4 was chosen because it is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. World Animal... Continue reading

For more than 40 years, Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, has been inspiring people to protect the environment. Quickly -- off the top of your head, what is the single most important thing you can do to lessen your impact on the earth? Recycle your newspapers? Drive a hybrid... Continue reading

“Ray Bradbury, cat lover #RIP” was the tweet sent out last June 6 by Buzzfeed after Bradbury’s death at age 92. Not “Ray Bradbury, author extraordinaire #RIP,” or “Ray Bradbury, sci fi genius #RIP,” or even “Ray Bradbury, Author of Fahrenheit 451 #RIP” but “Ray Bradbury, cat lover #RIP.” Elsewhere,... Thanks Book Buzz and Cynthia. I came across this article on the weekend which suggests that bushmeat hunting, or the hunting of gorillas and other non-human primates for food may also be transforming the rain forests in Africa as these primates are crucial to dispersing the seeds of some fruit- and nut-bearing trees. See: http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/wilderness-resources/stories/bushmeat-trade-is-transforming-rain-forest So sad.

Tomorrow is World Forestry Day, a day dedicated to recognizing those big beautiful lungs of the earth. But the day is traditionally not only about acknowledging those impressive plants lining the shores of our lakes and the paths of our parks, but also about recognizing the huge role they play... It’s no secret among my friends and colleagues that I am an advocate for animals. I reflect this in my diet, wardrobe, hobbies -- my whole life really. But I’m always surprised when some people then surmise that I don’t care about humans, as if compassion were a limited entity... Continue reading

Soheli, wow, Tama is both beautiful and clever. Every railway station should be managed by a cat! (Perhaps we could talk to TTC too?) Thanks for the info!

I love travel almost as much as I love cats and I often spend my vacations looking for cats, missing my own cats or generally checking out how other countries treat all their animals (sadly, not well – companion animals, like other animals, are mistreated, abused or ignored in every... Thanks for your comment cassandraprince. "Animal Liberation" was the book that did it for me too, in the early 80s -- I haven't eaten meat since then. The incredible power of a book, indeed!

I read all Mowat's books as a teenager, and yes, cried through A Whale for the Killing. Mowat is a national treasure. Hard to believe that some countries still kill these magnificent, intelligent creatures -- including Canada. Thanks for suggesting this book, M.

Thanks for your comments, Cynthia. I've been to the Farm Sanctuary in upstate NY and was blown away by just how similar to cats and dogs farm animals can really be when they're in a normal, less horrifying environment than a factory farm. Playful, affectionate and so smart -- after cuddling with a calf or playing tag with a pig, it would be impossible to eat one. Toronto Pig Save is doing some fantastic work bearing witness to the ongoing transport and slaughter of pigs -- right here in downtown Toronto. And I'm adapting some Thanksgiving recipes from this book, Vegan Holiday Kitchen (http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/search.jsp?Ntt=vegan+holiday) for our Thanksgiving dinner. Have a peaceful long weekend!
