Great post, Yvonne! You're so right. We need to get the word out about amazing organizations like this one. And now I totally want to go to Homegirl Cafe.

Ha! Thanks for the encouragement! We'll keep plowing ahead, repeating ourselves and hoping that manners become second nature ... one of these days. :)

That's amazing how much they grow in such a short amount of time. What great accomplishments! Congrats to you both! :)

What a great post, Sarah! I think so many moms, myself included, wonder if we're good ones. We definitely get tired and stressed and frustrated, but we also do our best to keep everything under control. And, btw, I've seen you parent and seen how great your kids are, and I think you're pretty awesome.

Are 3-year-old children supposed to have manners, let alone good ones? Ever since my daughter first started speaking, my husband and I have been encouraging her to say "Please," "Thank you" and "May I ..." Of course it's taken a... Continue reading

"Sex and the City" on TV was definitely its own era! And you should definitely watch "Lost" on DVDs. :)

Wow, you are so right on. Nice post, Kim. And like Teresa said, lack of sleep makes such a difference. But isn't that the permanent state of mommyhood?

Great point about calling it quiet time or rest time. Sometimes it's just the need to take a long break from the day that she still needs. And yeah, I was a little flummoxed too about the preschool not offering alternatives to napping. Thanks for the good advice!

The final season of the mega-popular TV series "Lost" has come to an end, and after six seasons of questions, answers and more questions, what fans like myself can agree on most is that there will always be nostalgia for... Continue reading

Wow, that sounds incredibly frustrating. You are doing an amazing thing, caring for your daughter and making sure that she gets the rest she needs, and the school district should know that. I hope they read this. About the gun buy-back program, the LAPD does the same thing -- it's actually going on today -- and it's to help get guns off the street. Ideally, gangbangers would be the ones handing over their weapons, but unfortunately, that's usually not the case. I think it's a worthy effort on their part, however. I didn't know that LAUSD was doing this as well, but although they sound pretty deaf to your particular needs, if there's a chance to get a gun out of the hands of an impressionable child or risky family, I'm all for it.

Thanks for the encouraging words! Each child definitely has a different time line. (I love the paint-scratching story, btw, Nicole!) And nap-optional seems to be the way to go. Now to just convince her to be quiet during that time ... :)

Well-said, April! This is so encouraging to really validate the moment, whatever that moment is. And it is OK to be angry or sad or happy. Thanks for the reminder. :)

You're right. There is so much pressure to make sure your kids are doing all the right activities. But, like Amanda said, balance is so important. If they can pursue their interests and be happy at the end of the day, I think that's doing a great job.

Wow, that sounds so familiar! :) We got away to Santa Barbara recently, and it made such a difference in all of us. Would love to visit Julian. Sounds lovely ... especially the apple pie. Glad you guys had a relaxing time!

I totally hear you, Yvonne! Honestly, I've been not-so-secretly longing for an iPad, and every time I see one of those billboards with someone casually holding it against their knees, my wallet quivers. Those marketers are evil geniuses. :) The "Nightmare" and other horror ads, however, are just terrible.

Oh man, Sarah. That's rough. You should definitely have some lead time. Your post really brings back memories of my mom sewing some sort of taffeta costume late at night, right before I had to wear it. I guess I should just stock up on Rit now. :)

I love the photo, too, Eunice. I feel for you. My preschooler was doing this for a while as well. We know all about baby foot in the face. :) Wearing them out is a good idea, maybe giving them a little pep talk. But, honestly, they might have to come to it on their own. Good luck and hope you get to sleep soon.
