Interests: i am currently reading through the wallander books, in order. i don't like to be pigeon holed by my so-called hobbies. this may well interfere with my ratings on the search engines of the world, but who's bothered? Why won't this flaming thing accept capital letters? it's making me look illiterate.

Maybe that one and the privy would make nice postcards!
Here be Quakers...
On the way back from Cambridge I decided to take a detour and visit Wisbech as there was a National trust house I fancied a look at, Peckover House. It was a little on the tricky side to find, but well worth it I thought. It's quite a compac...
The one that rhymes with nits?
Funny how kids like to discuss these things isn't it? One of 'my' 15 year old boys gives me daily updates of the state of his routine.
How are you spelling that?
Do you play Scrabble at all? I have to say I'm a big fan, and we play it at school quite regularly. It's good on a lot of levels, both for improving spelling and vocabularly; for encouraging turn-taking and social interaction; but most of all for having a good laugh. Like this afternoon... We ...
There's a 6th former (he's very, very good)and another member of staff who also play with us. It gets very intense and competitive. I love it!!

The A14 was the starting point for the journey, then the M1! Just something to be got through...
Where was I?
So, I went away for a few days during half term. I don't think it'll take long for you to guess where I was... The bikes and the punts should give it away. Cambridge. I had a really good break, even though it's quite a long drive from here. I chose a bog standard hotel...
Susan, glad you've found things in here to keep you busy!! The stamp sets are great, you can even make wrapping paper using brown paper or wallpaper lining paper. Very artisan...

I haven't been to Castle Howard, at the moment we're 'doing' National Trust Midlands properties!
Couldn't agree more about Downton. We spend a lot of time doing spoof scenarios with Lady Mary's voice- it's getting dafter and dafter.
Duchess for a day...
If you've seen the film The Duchess you may recognise where we went yesterday. Kedleston Hall, which stood in for Chatsworth in the film. Due to the terrible weather the river was very high and racing along. You notice the similarity to Chatsworth as soon as you arrive, even the drive up t...
We all know what's generally to be found under sheep...
Somewhere over the rainbow...
The girls and I had a day out today, eldest is home for just a few precious days from Paris, more of our visit later. The sat nav took us on another white knuckle ride over all the back roads, which were flooded in the rural areas. It doesn't matter what you put in the programming, the thing ...
I'd like to be too hot right now! Awful here...
Good luck with the sale of the house, I suppose it'll give you more freedom to explore without feeling you should go to the same place because you have a property sitting there?
Filling in the blanks
It's good to be back. Spain was hot. Too hot and humid for me most of the time (thank goodness the house has air con), with temperatures in excess of 30 degrees. Those six long days of being in the car (with overnight hotel stays), driving through England, France and much of Spain to, and t...
Hmmm, wish I could say yes to that with real conviction!

The comments are still going for moderation before publishing, I don't really like doing this but needs must! So bear with, I do publish them as soon as I can.

Try here! All depends on where you're based probably. When we lived in Moscow I asked locals where they went and discovered a factory shop that sold the most amazing cashmere at such low prices. Good luck!
Any colour as long as it's red...
I said there'd be a cardigan, and here it is. It's red just in case your browser is like mine and it appears as a shocking orange. It's red because I wanted a sort of vintagey cardigan to wear at Christmas. And you have to have red and cables for that. Or reindeer. Or both. It was a very easy...
Heh heh!

Bettina, thank you so much for taking the time to write. Your English is excellent, truly it is.
I shall be blogging again very soon! Dawn x

Life is full of setbacks, at least mine is. They appear out of the blue and upset the apple cart. One such derailed the blogging back there and I was all set to either delete the blog or carry on. All or nothing, because you can't archive it, which is a shame. I had some lovely emails checking I...
Yum, that looks delicious. I've noticed a lot of stray berries while out on my morning walks. I may have to take a bag with me...
Red pie at night
Last night, in fact. Made with brambles collected round the corner on the evening walk with Boo, a couple of tart Bramleys and some quickly mixed and rolled shortcrust pastry. No shepherds to hand but, accompanied by a carton of cream, it seemed to delight a couple of people here.
The girls tried driving and loved it. It's not so common here as the roads are so steep and narrow, people tend to travel a bit further afield.
Horsey heaven...
Guess where I went yesterday. The book shop, or store as the sign says, annoyingly. I don't like the way the word store is taking over from shop, a store is where things are stored a shop is where they're sold. I know; pedant. It was one of those hazy, warm late summer days; the fields are fu...
Ha ha, you reminded me of a time years ago when I was staying with friends and someone made tea with bouquet garni instead of teabags. It was vile but we were all too polite to say much!
They're no good at home...
Did I mention I was getting my eyes tested? I think I did, well I went along and the results explained why my glasses weren't giving good results. Basically they were rubbish. I paid a whack for varifocals and it turns out they weren't adjusted for the astigmatism, the fields of view didn't c...
Jenny- yeuch! I once worked with a girl who was late into work as she'd sprayed fly spray all over her instead of body spray. She decided to take a second shower!

Do you think it's always hot in Lincoln?!!? It certainly was when we were there.

Bank Holiday Monday was a proper August day weather-wise, warm and sunny. I decided to do a spot of reading in the garden (not bad, as it happens) by the pond. The bees were buzzing around me and it was clam and peaceful. A large yellow frog hopped across the ground in front of me and plopped...
Could there be something under your space bar? I know if I've been eating over the laptop I get crumbs under the keys. Have you tried upending it or blowing really hard round the keys? Whatever you do don't vacuum it...speaking from experience it pulls the keys of. Expensive.

I get lots of snails on the butter burr, but the birds keep them down I think. It's been a good year for moths and butterflies hasn't it? My windows are covered with moths in the evenings.

I'm still off the chocolate, I'd rather be without the joint pain to be honest. It's made a massive difference to my day to day life though I do miss it occasionally. I've found the odd dried date staves off cravings for sweet stuff.
If in doubt, bake...
Last week was stressful. Partly in a physical sense, with a lot of things to do, and mostly in an emotional sense. On Thursday my eldest caught the Eurostar to Paris where she'll be studying for a year. She was going to meet another young woman with whom she'll be sharing an apartment; and wh...
