Michael, I also appreciate your thoughts on the need for a law school in Alaska. In the event that a law school is ever seriously contemplated, I hope that consideration is given to the need for new lawyers in the state. I know that Alaska does a good job of attracting lawyers from the rest of the country. In fact, my home institution, University of Dayton School of Law, has sent at least two graduates to clerk in Alaska during the past two years. I am still excited about the idea of an Alaska law school though. First, I think it is a good idea for each state to have its own law school. West Virginia, for example, has only one law school and could obtain enough lawyers from the numerous schools in the eastern half of the United States. With that said, West Virginia University College of Law is a great institution, and I’ve been really impressed by the faculty members that I’ve met from there. The College of Law helps to supplement the local bar of West Virginia, creates additional pride in legal profession in that state, and helps to enrich the Academy. Second, as you are aware, the federal government and the state of Alaska have created corporations to service the needs of the native populations living in Alaska. These corporations are designed to be both Native Alaskan owned and operated. An Alaska law school would help to ensure that Native Alaskans have legal training available to them without having to travel beyond the borders of the state. I am guessing that many of the Native Alaskans trained at an Alaska law school would take up leadership positions in these corporations.

James, thanks for the link! The Fall 2009 opening date that is listed on the site seems rather aggressive based on the lack of publicity, street address, and application form. I will be interested to see if anything comes of it.
