Coming off their huge 3-1 win over first place Binghamton last Saturday, the Motor City Rockers looked to keep things rolling in a positive direction with another weekend battle against their I-94 rivals, the Port Huron Prowlers. Coming into this weekend, the FPHL's only two Michigan teams had faced each other eleven times, with the Rockers having won six of those contests. But Motor City won the first four meetings of the season between the two teams, so the Prowlers have rebounded to make the Battle of I-94 close with seven contests still remaining, including the two this weekend. Before... Continue reading

This was a big week for the Motor City Rockers. They had faced the first place Binghamton Black Bears twice previously, both games in New York, and came out on the losing end of 8-1 and 6-3 finals. But this past weekend was their first chance to face the division leaders on their home ice as Binghamton came to Fraser for a pair of games at Big Boy Arena. The Black Bears came into the Motor City leading the Rockers by a comfortable 17 points for the division lead, but this weekend was more about Motor City proving they could... Continue reading

After spending the last two weeks home in Michigan, it was back to the road for the Motor City Rockers with a trip to New York for three games in three nights this weekend. This marked the second to last out of state trek for the Rockers left on the schedule as the rest of the season will be extremely home heavy, and should be advantageous to their playoff positioning. Before the weekend's games, it was time for the inevitable roster changes and those started on Tuesday the 30th. Nick Magill-Diaz' return was short-lived as he headed back to the... Continue reading

After last weekend's disappointment of dropping two games to Port Huron, the Motor City Rockers were looking forward to three at home this weekend with Wytheville Virginia's own Blue Ridge Bobcats. With the roster reinforced with returning faces, and the last place team in the league in town, this was an opportunity for Motor City to get back in the win column and rack up some points in the competitive Empire Division in front of their home fans. Let's start with the roster as the Motor City Roster Shuffle continued this past week. With Scott Coash and TJ Delaney already... Continue reading

This has been a rough stretch for the Motor City Rockers. There has been all the roster turnover which I have covered extensively here. That has led to a lack of cohesion on the ice at times and losing two of their last three coming into this weekend's games with Port Huron, being out-scored 15-2 in those losses. The hope was being back home would help right the ship and enable the team to start racking up much needed points as the Danbury Hat Tricks are now nipping at their heels for second place in the Empire Division. But it... Continue reading

On the eve of their weekend series with the rival Port Huron Prowlers, the Motor City Rockers are making some roster moves. Or as I am coining it, the Motor City Roster Shuffle. Let me explain. The Rockers are just getting back from four straight road games in New York and Virginia. They have a few players on their roster that, due to other obligations, basically are only available for the games in Michigan. So when these longer road trips come up in the schedule, Motor City, due to this year's roster limits, is forced to release these players and... Continue reading

The Motor City Rockers are in a tough spot as of late. Few teams in the FPHL have seen their roster turned over as much as the Rockers have in the last month. I've covered prior moves here in my recaps, and this week's recap is filled with a bunch more roster changes, most just temporary out of necessity. Motor City traveled to Wytheville, Virginia this past weekend for the first time to play the Blue Ridge Bobcats, and with multiple players currently in the SPHL, more injured or suspended and others either unable to travel or having left the... The first week of 2024 was anything but quiet for the Motor City Rockers. The first order of business was awaiting a decision from the FPHL on any punishment for the end of game fight involving goalie Trevor Babin in the New Year's Eve game against Port Huron. That came down on Tuesday the 2nd when Babin was suspended by the league for three games. In the announcement, the league's Director of Player Safety Dave Jackson mentions Babin both spearing and taking a violent swing at a Port Huron player's head, but I find it odd nothing is said about... It was a busy week both on and off the ice for the Motor City Rockers after the Christmas break. There were considerable changes to the roster, with a couple key players moving, do I even say "up", to the SPHL amongst the moves. Then there was a three game weekend set with their I-94 rivals, the Port Huron Prowlers to bring an end to the 2023 portion of the FPHL schedule. The roster shuffling started on Thursday when defenseman Nick Magill-Diaz signed a standard player contract with the Pensacola Ice Flyers of the Southern Professional Hockey League. Magill-Diaz is... The streak is over. After suffering five straight losses, the Motor City Rockers finally got back in the win column Friday night as they exploded for eight goals, including a four goal night for the game's number one star, in an 8-4 victory over the Elmira River Sharks in front of 876 fans at Big Boy Arena. This was the fifth meeting of the season between these two squads, but the first in Fraser as Elmira hosted the previous four. Motor City won three of those four contests with the other game a shootout loss, so they had managed eleven... Continue reading

Adversity has hit the Motor City Rockers. After the team opened the season with twelve straight games without a regulation time loss, they've now lost four games in a row in regulation, the latest coming Saturday night in their return to Big Boy Arena in Fraser. After a tough loss the previous night in Port Huron, the Rockers were looking to the friendly confines of their home ice to change their fortunes and get back to their winning ways. And they had the benefit of the return of two key forwards as both Declan Conway and TJ Delaney were back... Continue reading

The Battle of I-94 heated back up again Friday night in Port Huron as the Motor City Rockers concluded their eight game road trip with their sixth match-up already this season against the Prowlers at McMorran Place. Motor City had dominated the first five contests, winning them all, four in regulation and one in overtime. In order to continue their winning ways against their Michigan rivals, they'd have to do it without two suspended players, two injured players and integrating some newly signed fresh faces. The new additions contributed right off the bat but it wasn't enough as Motor City... Continue reading

I know the last thing the Motor City Rockers' players and coaches will give you are excuses for losing, but I want to be fair about this weekend's games so I guess I am going to make some excuses. Yes, the Rockers only took two of a possible nine points from this weekend's trio of games. It started out great with a thrilling overtime win in Danbury Friday night. Things were going good Saturday, a quick 2-0 lead, until the unfortunate and uncalled for dirty hit on captain Danny Vanderwiel that I cover here. Danbury came back to win that... Continue reading

It's hard to focus on, or really care about, the outcome of this game, given the event that happened in the first period, more on that shortly. Thankfully, the injured player involved is doing as well as he can given the circumstances. So I'll recap the second, and final, meeting of the season between the Motor City Rockers and Danbury Hat Tricks, with the disclaimer that, as I said, the stats and results of this game ultimately mean little in the grand scheme of things when you see a player, I don't care on what team, but in this instance... The Motor City Rockers came into Danbury, Connecticut Friday night still standing as the only team in the FPHL without a regulation time loss. In order to keep that streak alive, they'd have to get the franchise's first ever victory against last year's Commissioner's Cup champion Danbury Hat Tricks. The Rockers were also shorthanded in this game, with a key piece of their top line, Declan Conway, serving a one game suspension, and defenseman Nick Magill-Diaz recently placed on the IR. It didn't look good early as they fell behind 3-1 behind a barrage of shots from the Danbury offense.... Continue reading

Fresh off a 3-2 win Friday night, the Motor City Rockers were right back at it Saturday for another match-up with the Elmira River Sharks. This time, they made quick work of their Empire Division foes as the Rockers slayed the River Sharks 7-2. For the second time this season, the Rockers started a game four-on-four, after a pre-game warm-up violation minor was called against each team, in this case Jonathan Juliano for Motor City and Rasmus Asp for Elmira. Motor City would score early and often in the first, starting with leading scorer Scott Coash. He picked up a... Continue reading

After falling in overtime to Watertown on Thanksgiving Eve, the Motor City Rockers looked to get back on track against another New York division rival as they traveled to Elmira for another weekend set with the River Sharks. These two teams just faced each other three weeks ago with a pair of games at First Arena, with Elmira winning the first match in a shootout 3-2 before Motor City got revenge the next night in a 4-1 victory. The first period belonged to the goaltenders as Elmira's Spencer Kozlowski turned aside all twelve shots he faced, while his counterpart, Motor... Continue reading

Coming into Wednesday night's contest, the Motor City Rockers were the last team in the FPHL to have still not suffered a regulation time loss. They had been joined by Binghamton, but the Watertown Wolves took care of that Saturday in an impressive 5-1 win over the Black Bears. Now the Wolves looked to knock off the Rockers as well at Watertown Arena on Thanksgiving Eve. They didn't quite pull it off, needing overtime to get the victory, so the Rockers still come away with a point, but this was another regulation win that slipped through Motor City's fingers as... The Motor City Rockers last took to the ice over a week ago when they completed a weekend sweep of their former division rivals, more on that shortly, the Port Huron Prowlers on November 11th at McMorran Place. With eleven teams in the FPHL this year, this past week was a bye week for Motor City as they were the odd team out of the schedule. It's been an extended break for me as well as I was at a different kind of rock show the weekend the Rockers were disposing of the Prowlers, a three night stand of concerts... Continue reading

After Friday night's disappointing shootout loss to Elmira, I fully expected the Motor City Rockers to bounce back with a better effort. And the team did just that, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back in a 4-1 victory over the River Sharks before an announced crowd of 1,179 at First Arena. As I mentioned, it didn't take long for the Rockers to strike as Scott Coash sent an outlet pass ahead to Declan Conway whose backhanded pass to Rocco DiCostanzo was then deposited past Elmira goaltender Spencer Kozlowski for DiCostanzo's second goal of the season just... Through five games, the Motor City Rockers have yet to lose in regulation and have earned at least one point in each of those games. These are good things. But in two of those contests, they've lost a late lead only to go on and lose in a shootout, losing precious points along the way. These are bad things. I know it's early, no need to over-react to early season games, but in a division that I expect to be highly competitive for a playoff spot, those lost points could come back to haunt them as the Rockers could very... After a successful opening weekend in Port Huron, taking five out of a possible six points, the Motor City Rockers opened the home portion of their schedule Friday night at Big Boy Arena in Fraser against the expansion Blue Ridge Bobcats from Wytheville, Virginia. It was a game of momentum swings that ultimately saw the Bobcats prevail in the shootout for a 5-4 victory, the franchise's first before 817 fans. The Rockers had a golden opportunity to jump out in front in the first period when two Bobcat players headed to the box at 12:25 for a full two minute... Continue reading

Last season, the Motor City Rockers kicked off their inaugural campaign with back-to-back losses to the Port Huron Prowlers, one at home and one on the road. This season, the two Michigan rivals started with two games in Port Huron against each other with a much different outcome. Friday night, the Rockers mounted a late comeback down 2-0 to force overtime before Scott Coash sealed the 3-2 win in the extra session. Saturday night at McMorran, Motor City won by the same score, but this time in regulation to take five of a possible six points back home in a... Continue reading

One week after an exhibition game between the two teams, won by Motor City, the Rockers and Port Huron Prowlers faced off for real in the 2023-24 season opener at McMorran Place. As you'd expect, it took some time for both teams to get their legs under them, and Port Huron found theirs first jumping to a 2-0 lead. But the Rockers came out in the third period looking like a different team, completely dominated the final stanza to tie it up, then turned to a familiar face for overtime heroics. The first period started out with four-on-four hockey due... Continue reading

Let me preface this post by saying, this is the current Motor City Rockers roster as of the evening before their season opener on the road against the Port Huron Prowlers. The roster currently stands at twenty players, but will need to be down to nineteen by next week. From here on out, any roster updates will be covered in separate posts, but it's now or never to write about the roster that is expected to make the trip up I-94 to the Blue Water area tomorrow. This year's season opening roster for Motor City features fifteen players that were... Continue reading
