I've been using the time blocking technique that Cal Newport describes in his book DEEP WORK, which was a great read about how to manage your time specifically to promote deep focus for sustained periods. Time blocking has been particularly helpful in eliminating online distractions. No more opening a web... Continue reading

As part of my fellowship, I was assigned an executive coach. One piece of homework from our first meeting was to list four reasons I am doing this fellowship. He said, "You're good at design. Make it a nice one-sheeter you can hang up." I didn't do either one of... Continue reading

Did you know that I worked at a business bank for six months this year? After I finished my MBA in February and was laid off from the marketing agency I was working for, I wanted to do something completely different, and decided to learn new skills while figuring out... Continue reading

Leonard Cohen (1934-2016), rest in peace. Anthem The birds they sang at the break of day Start again I heard them say Don't dwell on what has passed away or what is yet to be. Ah the wars they will be fought again The holy dove She will be caught... Continue reading

(Originally posted on Opinions for Nothing.) I don't remember the first time I met Volodiya, but it was sometime in the first few months after I transferred to University of Alaska Fairbanks, so it would have been in the late Winter or early Spring of 1994. He was an RA... Continue reading

(Originally published on Opinions for Nothing.) My dad was 19 years old when he married my mom. She was 16 years old, and three months pregnant with me. My parents separated when I was five years old, and divorced when I was nine years old. My dad wasn't known for... Continue reading

Today was my niece’s funeral. Her former band teacher gave the eulogy. His words were lovely, the passages fitting. I sat behind my stepsister and her husband and their children. My six-year-old on my lap, so someone else could have a seat I told her, but because I needed to... Continue reading

You like being a know-it-all. You take pride in it. I know you do, because I do, too. You are probably smarter than most people, but knowing that is enough. You don't have to prove it. You don't have to make sure everyone else knows you are smart, too. You... Continue reading

(Originally published on Opinions for Nothing.) Clearly, I would not be friends with people who are not awesome, so I am mystified by one friend's low self-esteem. I told her that, if I could, I would gladly give her some of my self-esteem because sometimes I feel like I have... Continue reading

(Originally published on Opinions for Nothing.) I don't think I'm invincible, but I do think I'm unbreakable. I believe, with every ounce of my being, that there is nothing in this world that can happen to me from which I won't recover, emotionally. Nothing. I consider all possibilities. What is... Did you see these pants I bought at Kohl's? So similar! They are also super tight in my thighs, but I pretend like the pattern creates an optical illusion that hides it. http://pinterest.com/pin/36662184438973372/

Great words. You know I don't have a problem with Speak! I love Essential. That wasn't one of my words for last year, but it was definitely an underlying theme - for this year, too. I am so busy that I don't have time to spend on things that don't directly relate to my goals. This blog for instance. Posts here are going to be so rare in 2013 Best of luck, and I'll help you in any way I can!
