good post.
Danish Børnehave or kindergartens are also all about play, and some of them are about playing in the woods! There were a few in greater Copenhagen that were "school of the woods" where the children dressed up in oversuits and boots and just played out in the woods all day long :)...
Crisis in Kindergarten
Kindergarten classrooms across the United States are in a state of crisis. What's most scary about this crisis is that it is not apparent! It is the crisis of the loss of play: the hallmark of developmentally responsive education in Kindergarten. A recent report from the Alliance on Childhood t...

thanks Trish!
We're well-aware that our nine year-old will not keep up his end of the bargain periodically, but our goal is to have him and the dog on a regular cadence within a year or two ;). Let's compare notes!
bangsi
"Every dog deserves a boy" said Mr. Peabody, and he was right. Malcolm has been after us for a dog for a couple of years, and we felt he was ready for it, and so here he is. 'Bangsi' (which means 'teddy bear' in icelandic) is a mini aussie or Minature Australian Shepherd dog. We became e...

stand and deliver
there's a bit of a standing desk meme going 'round right now. While in Copenhagen I had a nice desk that could be raised/lowered to allow working while standing, which I really liked. So with my engineer-dad's help I adapted a Geek Desk elevating base to a nice IKEA Galant... Continue reading

boxing day bike geekery
a bit of bicycle geekery for boxing day. My Atlantis has very high & wide wheel clearance so that you can use big, fat tires, or knobby tires with or without fenders, so I've always been jealous of riders about... Continue reading

office space and sushi night

9/11 killed my company (a true story)
here's an interesting story I heard today -- from a former co-worker I haven't spoken to in around 10 years.... context: Before going to Microsoft in 1999, Susan and I worked at 'Next Generation Network' or NGN. NGN was about "digital billboards" in public places like 7/11 stores. We (a... Continue reading

Hey Auntie!
I'm sure you're not ready to kick the bucket, but according to the "letter of the law" I am indeed middle-aged:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_age
Note that this fact has no connotations for me and changes my behavior or attitude not one whit :).
STP, or the annual migration of middle-aged salmon to portland
Here in Salmon Nation there is an annual tradition where thousands of mostly middle-aged cyclists gear up and ride the 200-odd mile trip from Seattle to Portland via bicycle. I’m talking about the STP of course, which is a venerable and now-popular tradition here: It was sold out this year...
on net neutrality and google-verizon
I’m still trying to get my head around the Google-Verizon Net Neutrality proposal, and what it actually means, but in the meantime, here’s a few links on the topic from some people who know more about the topic than I ever will: Dan Gillmor: Ominous references to the "public Internet"... Hey Andy -- Yep I did say those weren't my photographs and that there was snow up there... still beautiful though!
One of your dad's friends said they'd been camping since you were a little 'un == approx. 30 years, must've been the wine talking ;).
camping

vi, guitar and muscle memory

Eric - upgraded to Web 4 and the FTP-ish approach works, thanks.
The UX is a bit weird though: Selecting 'Open Site' shows no FTP option (that uses FPSE only although it doesn't tell you that); you have to use 'Site/ Import' to see the FTP options.
worst. tech. support. ever.
I had the following “discussion” today with “Rex Bowen” of “Tech Support” for the hosting provider that hosts my two domains planetmurray.org and freeassoc.net. If there were an actual way I could reach through the wire and strangle him (her? it? Can’t tell… probably a ‘bot in India) I’d have d...
Thanks Eric -- I'll try one of the FTP variants instead, and upgrade to Expression Web 4 as well.
