I don't use gag writers either, but a number of other cartoonists do. This really is kinda like an underground sorta thing. I mean, I've met a couple of guys who wrote for Charles Addams back in the day. I didn't know he had gag writers until I spoke with them. Gag writers are sort of an open secret. THE HOKINSON FESTIVAL, a collection of Helen Hokinson's New Yorker cartoons, is introduced by the man who wrote most of her gags. So, it's not like it's a secret. Thurber's THE YEARS WITH ROSS describes "tinkering," wherein a writer (usually White) would play around with a gag or sweeten it. Some of today's daily newspaper strip cartoonists use gag writers as well.
Gag writers (at least for magazine gag cartoons) typically get 30% of the sale, and that means that you better know some good-selling cartoonists to make some decent $$$.
Gag Writing - Just Say No
Saw this interview with gag writer Robert Rafferty and thought it was interesting. I don't personally use gag writers, although there are plenty of good cartoonists who do, but what struck me most in the interview was this bit of advice to folks looking to sell gags: When it comes to gag wri...
You mean you have to wash and wear clothes? And travel more than just down your own hallway? Blurgh!
Andertoons Mobile Cartoon Office Day 2
OK, so it's my second day at the ol' library. Today was nice enough I could put the entire Andertoons mobile office into service: Here's my view as I write this: OK, down to work... Technorati Tags: Andertoons, cartoon, cartoonists, cartoons, comics
Some great advice, my friend!
"Phone chops" is a great term, and it's true that you can't hide behind your email. You got a problem or a concern, CALL THEM.
And, yeah, I could have learned more about business before going into cartooning full-time.
"Fillmore" Cartoonist "Lucky to Have a Day Job"
Mallard Fillmore's Bruce Tinsley... ...has no illusions about where the cartooning industry is headed. “I don’t know how many cartoonists are still going to have jobs in the next few years,” he says. “But I have a son who’s 11 and wants to be a cartoonist, and I tell him, you better learn all...
Not only does he already have that great dynamic perspective on the Doc Ock octopus arms, he letters better than I do now!
Henry's Sinister Six - Doc Ock
My five-year-old son, Henry, loves Spider-Man. Well, to be fair he pretty much loves all things superhero, but Spider-Man holds a special place in his heart. So last week I let him check out a DVD of a recent animated Spidey kids show, Spectacular Spider-Man, and he get really into the episod...
This is one of my favorites.

LEGO Moose
Just a little something I threw together one day: You can check it out in more detail here. Technorati Tags: andertoons, flickr, LEGO
Baby with coffee? That's me!
I think you should do a comic about SAHDs. Really. It would be good.
SAHD Logo
As you may or may not know, in addition to being a cartoonist, I'm also a stay-at-home dad. I'm part of a group of SAHDs that meet often for playdates, bowling, movies, etc... and I was asked to come up with some ideas for a logo/graphic for the group. Here's the end result: I tried to...
"'Look at me, this is me on page 41!'"
I LOLed out loud & everything at this quote. Last year, I alienated one of the cashiers at the local grocery when I told her I was buying Women's World that week because a cartoon of mine was in it.
"I'm a cartoonist!," I told her. She looked at me as though I'd lost my marbles. Whoever heard of a person who makes money selling little wacky drawings?
I learned from then on the lesson that you so aptly imbed in the interview: "you can't do that."
Cartoonists should be seen and not heard.
Article About Me in Home Town Newspaper
Recently I was interviewed by the North Scott Press, the newspaper from the small town in Iowa where I grew up. Here's a snippet: While his classmates at North Scott High School were aspiring to be doctors or bankers or high-powered CEOs, Mark Anderson was engaged in the serious pursuit of ...
I've worn glasses since I was 12 years old. To draw, I have to take my glasses off. I always thought this was odd, but I can see best up close without them. I found out a while ago that Stan Goldberg, who draws Archie, also does this.
Bifocals
I've worn glasses my whole life and been OK with it, but yesterday the optometrist told me I need bifocals. Hold on a sec... HEY YOU KIDS, GET OUTA MY YARD!!!! So, yeah, I'm getting older. On the bright side, it'll be nice to see what I'm drawing again. (BTW, as much as I'd like to s...
Wow! I really like this. Nice touch that one fellow has a black spacesuit on, the other a white.

The Mrs. and I are just back from a much needed weekend sans children (thanks grandpa & grandma!) in Galena, IL. Some pics: Grant's home Grant's home's sitting room Grant's home's town's shopping Checking my iPhone while pretending to use an old switchboard Apparently a lot of ...
The "Tell me about your mother" cartoon is one of the funniest cartoons I have ever seen. Thanks for that!
I get your jazzy Andertoons music in my head now. I am concerned it may shove out some valid gag cartoon ideas of my own, dang it.

A Few Of My Favorite Things
LEGOs, Apple, and Star Wars. This so totally rocks! Hat tip to The Brothers Brick! Technorati Tags: andertoons, apple, LEGO, toys
I love the fact that at the last minute you rewrote the gag line to the "What in God's name are you talking about." One cartoonist I chat with always says it's the last cartoon you do, the one you rush through, the one you draw up just to add one to the batch you are sending -- it's THAT ONE that sells.
Cartoon Conversations - Business Cartoons 2
More business cartoon chat: Miss the first one? Here it is! Technorati Tags: andertoons, business, cartoon, cartoonist, cartoons, comics, video
Ooh. I like these. Morticia ... yummy! My First Goth!
Addams Family Card Game
OK, so these cards don't have actual cartoons on them, but they're based on Addams, so there you go. Enjoy! Technorati Tags: andertoons, cards, cartoon, cartoonist, cartoons, comics, flickr

Cartoon Conversations - Death Cartoons
I recently got a note from a reader complaining that a cartoon I'd done about death was in poor taste. Here's a few more: Technorati Tags: andertoons, cartoon, cartoonist, cartoons, comics, video
Ooh. I looked at your Flickr photos. I like how the wings pivot.
LEGO Egg Fighter
There's no interesting reason why I decided to call this little LEGO ship of mine an "Egg Fighter," I just thought it looked like an egg. Anyhow, there's some pics up here. Enjoy! Technorati Tags: andertoons, LEGO
I love these, but was sadly disappointed that, when reading the gag lines, you did not use your tacky Irish brogue accent.
Great cartoons, as usual!!!!
