Postcard no. 2
Oh! I hadn't realized - in my attempt to be silly and suspenseful - that I would lead you to believe we'd found our farm. I'm so sorry! I do hope that day will come soon, and I assure you that when it happens, my excitement will leave no room for doubt. So no, this is not ours, but it is in our ...

Swan Lake and a dancing Excavator
On the away to the desert a couple of weeks ago we were listening to the Ballet Stories audio book. When Swan Lake was playing, we were passing by a road construction site. There was an excavator situated on top of a small mount of dirt doing its job, turning, lifting and pouring. Having our wi...

happy birthday max!!!
(we're celebrating a birthday in our house today too!!! ;-)
5 is a magic number
Today is Max's birthday. He's five. Five! As I tucked him in last night, waiting for that two-breath sigh that comes just as he drifts off to sleep (which didn't come, because, well, he was almost five), I peeked over to the rocking chair in the corner of his room. There is a spot on the bac...
i too have been noticing the light.
even the giant pile of dishes in my kitchen sink looks beautiful with the golden autumn sunlight steaming in through my kitchen window.
right now
One thing I have always loved - and will someday remember and miss - about this house, is the way the light shines right through from one side to the other at certain times of day. Old, worn wood and golden sunshine meet, and everything feels warm and good and so alive. It's always most ...
this is beautiful amanda. thank you.
my husband's work schedule has been very varied lately but we're managing to eat breakfast together as a family. i carry our oatmal and scrambled eggs and all the fixin's out on a thrifted wooden tray.
no matter how chaotic the rest of the day is...our breafasts together are just magical.
food bits
I think about food a lot anyway (how can I not, when most of my waking hours are spent in the planning/making/eating/cleaning of it?). But in the events of recent weeks and months, I've found myself thinking about it even more, if that's possible - the comfort of food; the blessing of wh...

making plans for Harper
He Who Sports The World's Most Awesome Cowlick (we do declare) is about to turn ONE. I know. Crazy. Crazy and true. The planning has begun - by a whole lot of people. Five very motivated and excited family members of his, to be precise. Everyone's working on something - songs are being writt...

Shalom!

for Papa - 2009-2010
Papa just got his 2009-2010 hat! (New here? It's a tradition! Check it out - 2008, 2007, 2006). I wanted to make something different for Steve this year - nine years into this annual hat knitting gig and I've kind of covered a lot of terrain - ribs, stripes, simple cables. Not to mention the...
oh kate! i just love your conversation after the phone call.
last year i invited my friends and family to join me for a moon circle. before i sent the invitation i asked my aunt if she thought it was too "out there" to send to the whole group.
she paused and then said...ummm...well...let's just say i don't think it's any weirder than when we all came to your house to help plant your kids' placentas.
(i did send the e-mail, by the way...and a bunch of people, including my aunt and my mom, came to my moon circle! it was great and as soon as we can find a year-round venue i hope to start it up again!)
Preparing for Martinmas
I had to laugh as I hung up the phone two nights ago, after inviting some family friends over to celebrate Martinmas (a little known festival focusing on compassion and light) that has become an important part of advent preparations in our house. Justin looked at me with a crooked smile. "Do the...

baby heads and baby toes
This was one of the first hats I made - for Calvin - when he was a babe. I remember using this picture for his first birthday invitations, which would mean he was right about the age that Harper is now. Harper is nearly one, and Calvin will turn nine in no time at all. Amazing. Harper's ...

Monthly Mindfulness:: capturing light
We had one of those weekends that make me love fall even more. It was full of sunshine and starlight, warm air and outside play. It was also a weekend where I found my camera strapped to me more often than not. Standing in the fields, soaking in vitamin D, I noticed just how good I felt. I...

sitting still
{photo by Steve} In the midst of so much, I'm doing my best to find the still. Those moments are harder to come by these days, and they always mean letting something else go by the wayside. But oh, they matter so much. So much. So, here's to a new week! A week with as many moments of still...

Yuri's New Sweater! (A modern day Pele's New Suit)
Once upon a time there was a little farmer boy named Yuri. He was friends with all the animals on his farm, but his favorite friend was a sheep named Matilda. One day he asked his mama if she would make him a sweater from Matilda's wool. Hmmmm....thought Mama..... "Since you help us out on th...
oh kate! i just loved this whole post.
we are really focused on our dinner rhythm right now. (which is the polite way of saying what we've been doing for the past few months is NOT working AT ALL!!!)
i'm actually cooking up a little fun challenge to encourage my kids to try new foods (without forcing them to do so) because it's killing me that i make such healthy foods for everyone and then they eat peanut butter and jelly night after night.
will keep you posted...

Monthly Mindfulness:: dinner rhythms
I feel like I need to stand up, raise my hands and say, "I admit to sometimes making three entirely different dinners every night to accommodate for the rotating list of most-picky eaters in this house." There. I said it. I have longed for the rhythm of sacred family dinnertimes for, um, ev...

more gratitude (is a good thing)
Yesterday was a particularly frustrating day in what I've begun calling 'the new normal' around here - a doctor's appointment in which we were hoping for answers led only to more questions. {Edit: Steve gently points out that I may sound a little dramatic here. He assures you that he is 'fine,' ...
