Many of you get massages, but most of you – about 70% - have never had a facial. A facial used to be considered just a luxury for those with money to burn. Here's four reasons why having a facial is a matter of health, and WHY you should make time to get a professional cleansing. 1. Our bodies shed over 30,000 dead skin cells every minute. Many of those end up as household dust (believe it or not) and as dead and dirty skin stuck to your face. 2. The cosmetics you wear, the dirt your face collects from... Continue reading

Trying to decide on a serum for youthful skin is complex - there are just so many choices, and new products are routinely released into the marketplace. While those new finds are appealing, sometimes its the proven ingredients which are still the best choice. Vitamin C is an example of an ingredient which is not new to the industry, but which has provided better outcomes, mainly because of improved stabilization technology that now provides dramatic benefits to your skin's health. What is Vitamin C? Vitamin C is a prime ingredient of collagen, the substance that binds cells together. Collagen metabolism... Continue reading

Thank you to Suyin Karlsen, West Coast Educator & Master Esthetician, A Natural Difference, for the following article: SPIN TRAPS Stopping Free Radical Damage Before it Begins HOW DID SPINTRAPS COME ABOUT? Scientists and doctors know that FREE RADICALS cause a lot of damage to a cell. They can also harm DNA. But they didn’t know exactly what type of damage they caused or the extent of that damage. The idea came about to TRAP free radicals for study. But how to trap them? Well, as usual, the answer lay in good chemistry! Certain chemicals, it seemed, readily attracted free... Continue reading

Did you look in the mirror one day and see some ugly brown spots on your face, where they never were before? Why are they there, what does it mean, and what can you do about it? Excess sun causes our skin to produce melanin as a protective reaction to the sun’s burning assault on our skin. Melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color, acts as a barrier to further damage by absorbing ultraviolet light. A suntan results from this attempt by the skin to protect itself. You can think of these as a band -aid your skin creates.... Continue reading

Everyone has heard of the damaging effect free radicals have on our skin and in our bodies, accelerating aging and leading to damage on a cellular level. Free radicals are unstable, unpaired electrons which attack other cells and lead to the disruption of these living cells and harm our DNA. In some cases, our body's immune system produces its own free radicals to kill viruses and bacteria. Most free radicals, though, are created from outside sources like pollution, radiation and cigarette smoke. A few free radicals aren't a big deal for our bodies. But after years of accumulation, they attack... Continue reading

Here are 5 things everyone can do: Use Vitamin C Vitamin C is essential in rebuilding collagen which makes the skin look firmer and plumper. Use after cleansing, before moisturizer. Vitamin C is both an antioxidant and collagen booster. Begin with one application in the morning, every other day, and slowly move to using daily. You may use morning and evening. As an esthetician, I not only treat the skin, I treat the spirit. I believe that many people are lonely, and are starving for some human touch. I provide that non-threatening, nurturing touch, without an agenda, to my clients. This truth was brought home to me when recently, as I was saying goodbye to a new client, I did what I usually do: I hugged her. She hugged me back, but took a while to let go. I felt her need, and continued my hug until she was ready to end hers. This is what I do for others, and... Continue reading

Skin Tags may be linked to sugar intake & increased insulin levels. Why? When you eat foods high in carbohydrates like pastries, white rice and white potatoes, your body creates insulin to remove the sugar from the food. "Skin tags are small, soft, finger-like lesions most commonly found on the neck and under the arms. They are skin-colored and benign." Shelley Burns, Skin Deep, May/June 2010. People with 30+ skin tags indicates increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Solution? Focus on low-glycemic foods: apples, berries, brown rice, pears, vegetables & multigrain and multi-seed breads. You may need to visit your... Continue reading

A young woman contacted me recently to describe her one and only experience with an esthetician. She said it was a HORRIBLE experience! Not only was she made to feel awful about her problematic skin, but the treatment hurt! In my book, that's a big NO-NO. This woman was looking for someone who would get her skin to a healthy state, and to be kind and gentle about it. When I heard her story, I cringed.....Her experience is one I've heard about from other clients. An esthetician with a haughty attitude or condescending manner can forever turn someone off to... Dead cells make our skin dull, lifeless and rough. Removing these dead cells increases the cell renewal process and gives your skin extra shine and glow. Scrubbing enhances the absorption capability of your skin and improves blood circulation at your skin's surface, making this a nourishing and healthful treatment. Just as a professional facial can leave your face glowing and fresh, a body polish will leave your whole body smooth, soft, and vibrant, exposing the fresh, healthy skin below. After a full-body polish, you'll feel energized, pampered and refreshed. It removes stress and is great for the imperfections caused by... Continue reading

You've got to read about this new - as yet unapproved by the FDA - sunscreen: The best skin protection out there. "People are getting wise to the idea that UVA rays, less known than sunburn-causing UVB rays, cause classic signs of aging, not only wrinkles but also sagging skin, brown spots and yellow discoloration. And finding a legal sunscreen in the United States that effectively blocks UVA light, which Mexoryl-enhanced products do, is not as easy as it might seem."By the way, UVA rays are also known as the "Aging" rays, and UVB as the "Burning" rays. Excellent information,... Continue reading

Just heard on the Wall Street Morning Report radio show that scientists in the UK believe they have found the cure for skin cancer. There has been a breakthrough in the research through the development of a vaccine to treat melanoma. Melanoma is the most common cancer among ages 15 - 34. The vaccine attacks the tumor cells and boosts the body's response to fighting the cancer. "A study of 50 patients with advanced melanoma who had been given no more than nine months to live found that 16 per cent of them recovered completely with the vaccine. They have... Continue reading

The amount of fluids in our system affects the appearance of our skin. Most of us have dehydrated skin, usually because of weather extremes like wind and colder temperatures outside versus the dry heat indoors. Certain medications can also have a drying effect on our skin. Caffeinated beverages deplete the water in our cells. Drinking one 8 oz cup of coffee requires 4 cups - or 24 oz. - of water to counter the dehydrating effects on our skin. When our skin is dehydrated, it sags and wrinkles. Think of a raisin right out of the box. Now picture it... Continue reading

Wellness is both perceived and measurable. We know when we are doing right by our bodies and our minds. I believe most of us know when we aren't truly practicing healthful habits. Sometimes we just need some structure and outside motivation. Other times, we need advice. With that in mind, I wanted to share with you some information I recently found. Wellness ToolBox is a "powerful and sophisticated way to utilize medical information to promote wellness and manage illness that maximizes any fitness or wellness program you are using." If you struggle with breakouts or acne, check out Neutrogena's site: Skin Survey You'll learn a lot about your skin and why it behaves the way it does. I like the way the questions are presented. I DIDN'T like the results I received. Even though I answered that I have dry skin without breakouts, the survey recommends products for someone who does have breakouts. Still, it was fun to take, and the information is presented well. I don't necessarily recommend these products, but if you try them and they work for you - great! Let me know what you think.... Vitamin D is not a vitamin, and it does not act as a vitamin in our bodies. Vitamin D is really a hormone, made inside our bodies, without any help from the sun. It must be metabolized by our bodies to become a more hormonlly-active form within our liver and kidney. Once metabolized in this way, vitamin D can then provide its most important function: to aid in the intestinal absorption of calcium. Read more here. Comments are welcomed, and if you have any information to share, please do! Continue reading
