We have two families coming this year, one that moved to town over the summer and has no family nearby. We've been in the "away from family" position plenty of times, and I know how good it is to be included. Happy Thanksgiving to you!

I haven't listened to the new season of Serial yet, but have to admit I felt the same as you. Glad to hear you're enjoying it and hoping I'll feel the same. I just finished listening you the Jess Lively podcast where you were a guest! I'm so impressed with all you know about the enneagram (I think first heard of it from you) and appreciate hearing you talk, as I'm also a 4 wing 3. Happy New Year!
I read BIG MAGIC last week. One of the many things I've taken from it is to start using the word "create" instead of "write" when I'm working on something new. I need to (verbally) give myself permission not to produce but to explore -- something that isn't always measurable but is so important. Looking forward to your thoughts!

Thanks for introducing me to Station Eleven. I really enjoyed it!
Just added Station Eleven to Goodreads and a friend commented I must READ IT NOW. Requested and coming soon. Thanks for the suggestion!

Love the coincidence: I also started a paper book journal in April 2005! Alas, I've just finished 659...

So appreciate what you say here. As a children's author, I firmly believe a good book is a good book. Sure, if a reader isn't the intended audience, a book might not fully float her boat, but that doesn't mean children's and YA titles should be dismissed across the board. Open-minded readers are generous readers. And generous readers always have something to take away from the reading experience. Thank you.
And oh my gosh, Silence!!!!

I loved Girl with All the Gifts and Once Was Lost (which I believe is now called What we Lost). Do you ever listen to Sara Zarr's podcast? It's a really encouraging, realistic look at the writing life. At least it is for me. I appreciate others being honest with the hard stuff.

The Tender Bar! Housekeeping! Blink! On Writing! The Gifts of Imperfection! Excited to hear what you think. If you love The Tender Bar, All Over But the Shoutin' is a great, similar journalism memoir.

So many goodies here -- things I see I've written down before because you recommended them. Thanks for helping my reading list to grow. :) My favorite reads this year (some 2014 books, some not): The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie What is Visible The Girl with All the Gifts Olive Kitteredge The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Okay for Now (Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. I want to be Gary Schmidt when I grow up.) The Known World Brown Girl Dreaming Daily Rituals: How Artists Work Red Butterfly (coming Feb 2015...)

I've meant to read THE BROTHERS K for years. My mom gave it to me after reading it for a book club. This has nudged me to get going. Maggie Stiefvater spoke at the SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) in July, and I made sure to hear her twice. She has a great grasp on people and how to present them on the page.
I want to know when your hair got so short. It's adorable!! We're on the road to Carlsbad and will spend the day at the Caverns. Can't wait to share a bit of my childhood with the boys. Xoxo
