Inspired by previous groups, students in 8lfr2 created models of their bedrooms and then wrote descriptions of them. I was extremely impressed by their enthusiasm for the task, and their creativity. Of course, I was also impressed by their ability to use adjectives with a good level of accuracy when describing the rooms they created, but that's just the French teacher in me! Take a look at some of their work below - they'd love to hear from you as their aim is to receive more comments than previous groups, so please leave a comment. Continue reading

They were then given the task of working in groups to not only write a description of Mars, but to use the verb tables in their dictionaries to work out how to use the Future Tense and to provide a written account of what life will be like. Take a look at some of their work below. I think they did a fantastic job - what do you think? Do you agree with their thoughts? Please click on the comment tab below and let us know! Four Chinese teachers visited Chiltern Edge for four days last week. They shadowed students and observed lessons before teaching classes about Chinese folk tales and how to make dumplings (apparently they were delicious). They also taught some basic Mandarin as well as answering questions from students about life in Chinese schools. Both our Chinese guests and our students enjoyed their visit. Continue reading

In business terms, we no longer compete with each other just within the UK; we compete with the whole world. Companies of all sizes are responding to this challenge by learning to speak their customer’s language. More and more businesses work closely with companies in other countries. They need many different kinds of workers who can communicate in different languages and understand other cultures. No matter what career, if you have learnt a... Continue reading

14 of our year 9 students have just returned from a 12 day stay with their German partners at the Gesamtschule Hollfeld in Bavaria. Our students undertook a programme of work in the German school which prepared them for the various trips and activities during their12 days away. Roleplays around the shops of Hollfeld during the first week gave youngsters the confidence to use their German when out and about. The students immersed themselves in the German language and at the same time learnt at first hand what it was like living in a German family and attending a German... Continue reading

On Thursday 4th October Chiltern Edge once again played host to their annual "Eurovision" competition. Children from four local primary schools competed to win the coveted award. Standards were extremely high this year and competition was fierce. After a short break, the adjudicators announced their final decision. It was a close fought battle, but the winners this year were Micklands Primary School. Congratulations to everyone who took part - we at Chiltern Edge were extremely impressed by the quality of singing, the originality of ideas, and the range of languages used. At the end of May we said goodbye to Juliette Duthoit and Anna Reuling who have been our French and German language assistants for the last 8 months. They have been taking students regularly out of lessons in small groups to give them more practice in speaking and have coached GCSE students at lunchtimes. We are very grateful to them for all their work in school and the extra dimension they have given to language learning, as our students have gained greater insight into the customs and way of life in both France and Germany. Thank you, merci, danke! Continue reading

This year, Tuesday 21st February will be Mardi Gras in France, literally "Fat Tuesday", which is the French equivalent of our Pancake Day or "Shrove Tuesday. Why do you think it's called Mardi Gras? Well, it's the day before Lent (le carême), traditionally a period of fasting, so it's the day when traditionally all the fatty food is eaten before Lent starts. And yes, just like in the United Kingdom, pancakes (les crèpes) are eaten, as well as doughnuts (les beignets) and waffles (les gauffres). Could you follow a recipe in French for making "les crèpes"? Click on the link... Continue reading

In the period between Epiphany and Mardi Gras carnivals take place in many countries around the world, including France. Most of these carnivals take place in the two week period before Mardi Gras. One of the most famous carnivals is the Carnaval de Nice, which takes place in Nice on the French Riviera. This year the carnival takes place from the 17th February to 4th March and will attract over 1 million visitors. During the carnival there are corsi carnavalesques (parades), where floats are decorated according to a theme chosen each year. The floats carry gigantic colourful figures made from...
