New Blog Format
Faithful readers, in an effort to reduce costs, improve security and take advantage of new mobile technology this blog will start to post exclusively in datamatrix. What is it? Data Matrix symbols are made up of modules arranged within a perimeter and can encode up to 3,116 characters from th...
Adaptive Components have been mentioned a few times in this thread. Anyone care to share a Revit example of this?
Railings High Level
From my previous post its clear it will be difficult to hone in on any single aspect of a complex feature before hitting some high level items. In comments on the previous post I listed some high level issues with the current railing feature: Indirect UI - Designers do not want to work in a sp...
April 1st announcements should always be read with some degree of skepticism. :-)

I find it helps to change the scale of the view so you can see all the parameters clearly.
Familiy Editor Tips
This season at the Boston Architectural College we started an advanced class to get into more topics such as design options and advanced modeling. The family editor also gets more attention to cover topics such as nesting, parameter linking, type parameters ect.. I thought I would just post so...
Figured it out.

Help On-line
Help and related documentation for the three Revit products is now available on the web. The online help can be accessed from the documentation pages for each of the product centers on autodesk.com. Here are product specific links: Revit Architecture: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servl...
When I right click I get "Go to Bookmark" and "Print Page". What are you right clicking on? The history page does not produce a useful URL either.

The graphics are poor. The Topic headings are only denoted by a slight change in the point size of the font. The Topic "Advanced Walls" left me scratching my head. After reading it I still could not figure out what was so "advanced" about retaining walls, or what were the important factors about using a retaining wall.
Throughout the chapter you use the term "add" when you mean "build". How to "add" a wall.etc. When you want to add a wall to your selection of wall types what term do you use?
The whole manual is very encyclopedic in nature and could make better use of graphics.
Getting more "conceptual" in our documentation
In response to user comments, the Autodesk BIM User Assistance Team at Autodesk has been working hard to add more overview information to the online help. In this example, the team has added information to the Walls chapter to help explain conceptually how walls work in Revit. Note, this is the...
Revitness to me is the experience of being asked if there is enough headroom over the stairs and saying "Lets cut a section and see".
The notion that I am actually building walls and floors and not lines is for me the essence of Revitness.
Revit(ness)
While we are on break I am taking this opportunity to schedule a post I have been formulating for some time. Its not related to any specific feature but gets to the heart of "What is Revit" and therefore an exchange I have been eager to have with our customers. evitness In the beginning ye...
"Natural Capitalism" by Paul Hawken (and others)was a worthwhile read. Not solely devoted to architecture and design, but well worth adding to the mix.
Off Topic - Books
A short diversion from Revit. I'm just finishing a great book The City in Mind: Notes on the Urban Condition by James Howard Kunstler. I read a few others of his in college, specifically Home from Nowhere (1996) and Geography of Nowhere (1993). All are related in recording his thoughts on urba...
I would love to hear the rationalizations regarding why some features are left out of Revit Architecture. Trusses, for instance. From this end it seems to make little sense. What we end up thinking is that Autodesk is leaving out stuff in an effort to get us to buy another version of Revit. I suppose that would be a good enough reason from the Autodesk end of things, but from this end it seems petty.
Structure - Metal Deck
As many know Revit Structure implemented some features that the Architects have highly desired in Revit Architecture. These features are Curved Beams, Slanted Columns, Beam system Tags, Beam Coping, Metal deck, and Truss. Feedback has been consistent. (If you want to reiterate past comments ple...
When I am copying an item by selecting it then pressing the CTRL key, I have to press the CTRL key before I begin to move the item otherwise it does not copy. I would like to be able to press the CTRL key while I am moving the item. This would make the feature behave like AutoCAD and most other applications that I use.
Fix Fit Finish
Step into the not so wayback machine, somewhere late in the 2007 development cycle (2006), a new process came into being in the Factory. During the early years the fast pace of development was successful at rapidly expanding Revit's capabilities but there were some side effects. Some features ...
