I'm catching up here. My heart breaks for the end of things and yet I'm buoyed because you continue to move forward with your humor and honesty and sass intact. Elizabeth is beautiful as are you.
Ribbons in time
In the end it just wound itself together like strands of DNA as inseparable as each is distinct in its own right; part of a whole that became entirely indistinguishable from the sum of its parts when all was finally said (or finally left unsaid) and done. I don't really know what caused him to s...
That looks delicious. And your photos of it are wonderful. I can almost taste it.
rainy sunday brunching
It's one of those little gifts life hands you every once in awhile: a rainy Sunday morning. That which invites you to have coffee in bed, to loaf around in your pyjamas and to think of things to cook. Tomorrow I'm heading out of town for the week for work, so I've got some things in the refrig...
That is lovely. What a talented friend.
handcrafted thank you
That's not a wedding invitation. That's how Sherrill addresses an envelope... ...an envelope you hope contains one of her hand-painted cards. In this case, a card thanking us for sharing her birthday with her.
Beautiful words and image.
in which the cirque comes to town
Some of those acrobats, well I wasn't prepared for how they would make me cry.
The clouds seem to be especially varied lately. Towering, puffy and white, low hanging drifts of cotton batting. Yesterday as I drove home, there were two banks of clouds - one in the east the other in the west. Both were situated just so that I could see the sheets of rain coming down from them.
in which a cloud passes through
There's been a conversation over at Selma's about her need to, and her method of, surrendering to the divine. It got me thinking about times when I decided I needed to surrender over to what I call the universe. I associate the experience with "the universe," as I said to her, because I can...
I love the drama of it. Unfortunate pun not intended.
stage door
Stage door of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres, Victoria Street, Toronto Finishing up a proposal today, and I don't get out of the office until mid-afternoon, when I take a half-hour walk. I wander around Victoria Street, over a few blocks I find particularly charming. The stage door o...
Gorgeous, Jen.
post-rain show
The rain intrudes on our rooftop picnic, so Mom, Cathy, Elaine and Mia and I take the party down to my apartment. We still have a good time, and are joined by Kelsey later. Anyway, you have to forgive rainy skies that can produce post-event shows like this.
I love these. I'm trying to embrace the map my face is becoming. Your face is beautiful. I agree with Susan, the one with the glasses says thoughtful.
self portrait: 51 and a quarter
There was a point at which I thought I'd like to do a regular or semi-regular series of self portraits. At that time I thought it would be a good exercise in expressing honestly. Or trying anyway. But crikey it's uncomfortable. I have an hour left in the day and I haven't got a photo. I co...
That looks wonderful. This is what summer is all about. Isn't this what we wait for?
not complaining
Summer has officially arrived and Canadians everywhere are doing what they love to do a lot: complaining about the weather. Not me. I'm so glad to see summer. I am glad to have my bike out; to be wearing sandals and getting pedicures. I'm glad that the city festival season is in full swing;...
That's really wonderful. What a great shot. And I agree with Catherine on Facebook. Very Seuss.
purple mockers
I love these purple pom pom flowers, how they float above gardens like colourful little clouds. Apros pos because I found these ones at Cloud Garden off Temperance Street. I really loved these ones sitting atop this brick wall. They way they lean over it's as if they're looking over the wall ...
I love the light and shadow play.Really dramatic shots, Jen.
dusk
John Street, Toronto Mercer Street, Toronto As I stood there lining up this shot of the pink light on the red carpet and sidewalk, that bouncer, who had been standing with some other guys out of frame on the sidewalk, decided to walk into the shot. Maybe he was getting ready to rej...
What a gift! It sounds like you had a wonderful birthday weekend.
mr. rabbit shows up on earth day
Today, in honour of Earth Day, I go for a walk and spend some time mostly in the Toronto Music Garden near my home. It's gratifying to find the place coming alive in every corner. And I hate to think that we have snow forecasted for the next few days. No, I'm not kidding. April Fools Day was...
That mural is fabulous! What a kick to see that every day.
all wet on a brick wall
McCaul Street, Toronto Today I walk up to get my hair cut at the Elmwood Spa. On the way I see this great mural. Shop a little on my way home. Walk back via King Street amongst the theatre goers deciding where to eat post show.
I can't even look up at that, much less down! The thought of it makes my palms sweat.
(don't) wish I'd done that...
When I'm on my deathbed and looking back over my life and the things I've done, I won't regret having never been a window washer. Nope.
I laughed out loud at this. And now I'm going to have that song in my head, too.
na na nu nu nah nah
Today I see a young woman on a bike, crossing University Avenue at Pearl Street around 6:30 in the evening. She’s riding one of those attractive retro looking bicycles in a lovely soft green; comfortable looking – a touring bike, on which the rider sits up straight and holds the handlebars, rat...
That brick work is really cool. I love the intricate patterns.
But more importantly, that brunch looks delicious!
My priorities my be a little out of whack.
Out Walking: Queens Quay, Distillery District and Brunch
Captain John's Seafood, Queens Quay at Yonge, Toronto. This is not where we had brunch. For some reason Ceri doesn't find this place appealing. Brunch at Against the Grain, Queens Quay at Lower Jarvis (Corus Quay), Toronto Beautiful brick at the Distillery District, Toronto Wi...
Sadly, I believe he deleted it, but he's started another blog. http://chantauteuil.blogspot.com/ He writes short, delightful pieces that are a mix of literature, music, and memory.
Out Walking: Harbourfront, Danforth, Spadina
Pier on a grey February day. (Same pier I photographed at night a few days ago.) You can see the city airport in the background. Harbourfront, Toronto The Empire Sandy, the pretty ship that was once a tug. More on her here and here. Harbourfront, Toronto. Ceri and Kajama, Harbour...
Such a beautiful waterfront. The pier photo is really gorgeous. I have a friend who lives in Greektown. He used to blog at a place called The Danforth.

Such great subjects for black and white. I love the vertical nature of both photos. The building soars.
Black and White, Thursday Kind of Mood
Canada Permanent Trust Building, Bay at Adelaide Sculpture behind the Ritz Carleton, off Front Street
I agree, those are great shots. I love the composition of the top shot with the grid created by the window.
the snowstorm that didn't
Cool view from the Scotiabank Theatre, Richmond Street, Toronto We were supposed to get a big storm today, the rest of the province was to get it much worse, but we were supposed to get some. What we got were crazy gusty winds - I saw a plane come into the downtown airport from the south...
All these buildings appeal to me, but those rooflines in the second photo are some of my favorites architecturally. I love looking up recipes and adapting them. Sometimes it works better than others. Your egg strata looks delicious and healthy.
Out Walking - Queen Street West
Gladstone Hotel, Toronto Some house-tops over stores, Queen Street West, Toronto Prettiest (and CLEANEST) window of the day Today we decide to enjoy the afternoon and get some vitamin D with a walk up to and down Queen Street West. We walk as far as the Gladstone Hotel (top pho...
Those doors! What a beautiful building. And how can you not love a man in Morrison plaid?
that swarthy Scot stole my heart with his...
...Morrison plaid. Why, what did you think I was going to say? St. Andrew's Church, Simcoe Street at King, Toronto Note to self: visit the museum over some lunch hour. If I'm honest, I noticed the lusty fella's tree before I noticed his kilt. St. Andrew's Church, Simcoe Street at Kin...
It really is quite lovely and so much easier to appreciate when your teeth aren't chattering from the cold.
the colours of a rainy day in january
Last night Ceri and I were talking about how difficult it is to wake up in the mornings these days, and I agreed with him that’s it’s all January’s fault. Then, this morning I find wakefulness particularly elusive and when I finally drag myself out of bed I find it’s because it’s even darker th...
I realized a few months ago that I'd gotten into the bad habit of drifting. I wasn't paying attention. Or maybe I was too focused on one or two things and everything else going by was a blur. I couldn't pull myself out of it until I started again to hand write a journal every day.
I like how this is coming together for you.
finding a reason, substantiating
Gone is the life of leisure. I’m back to work after three restful weeks of living at my whims – meandering walks, cooking big pots of things, watching old movies, visiting with my people and enjoying my own company. Looking back now, I realise more than ever how much I needed that time. For th...
I'm so sorry for your friend's loss. Under similar circumstances, I had a reaction like yours. When my husband's mother died in 1992, it was a huge shock to me. His father had died when Doug was 18 and I didn't get to meet him. But when my mother-in-law died suddenly in her sleep at 57, it brought my own parents mortality into clear focus.
terra firma, rich fabric
Last night I had conversations with four of my oldest and most valued friends. I wish we didn’t have the reason that we all talked, but that we did made me feel better than I had in the twenty-four hours previous. I hope that was the case for all of us. Mostly for Denis, because on New Year’s...
