I run and internet company, but if you ask my friends, they will tell you that I'm not good with technology. I'm not. I have an iPhone, but no mobile apps. I don't even have itunes. But, I love business and people. If business and people do no embrace technology, they will be left in the dust. Technology and the internet will not fade away. Despite your opinion, more things will continue to shift online. Continue reading

What can we learn from the box office? Well, you have a lot of duds and you have a lot of huge successes. It's similar to a venture capital portfolio. My takeaway from this graph is to take a lot of smart chances making stuff. You never really know what is going to happen, so go create it and see what the market tells you. Diversify your portfolio (and I'm not talking about stocks). Continue reading

How cool would it be to design a retail store? Think about an Apple store vs Payless vs Dick's Sporting Goods. The design of the actual retail store can significantly effect store revenue. That is cool. I recently got the chance to go to Minneapolis and meet with some people and companies. I had the chance to go to the huge Mall Of America. It was gigantic. I like malls. I hate shopping, but I like malls. And, I especially enjoy mall food courts - but that is a story for another post. I saw a ton of retail stores.... Continue reading

There will be a huge market for products/services that connect old people to young people. Why? Because old people like that type of stuff - and, there is a heck of a lot of old people. The days of total retirement are over and older people love to dabble in things I write every idea I have on a word document and then wait at least a month and come back to reevaluate. After a month, most look like bad ideas. After a year, there has only been two that I truly believe will work with 100% certainty. I built... Continue reading

The future is inbound marketing. What does that mean? It means that people find/experience you instead of you reaching out to them. This is an important shift in resources. The strategy here is to try to develop leads by creating experiences so compelling that individuals find you. For example, writing a blog allows users to find you through Google searches instead of you sending out a ton of emails. Think about it. People are getting better and better at avoiding outbound marketing. We have caller ID, spam filters, and throw away junk mail. I think organizations will become more like... Continue reading

'If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the people to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea' -Antoine De Saint-Exupery, The Little Prince I pulled this from an amazing Netflix Culture deck. Continue reading

Yes, everybody thinks they could start a cool bar. The thing is, it's true. You could start a cool bar. Think about all the crappy bars that are out there that survive. You could do a better job. But, it doesn't matter, because you won't. That is the point - the idea is easy, doing it is what separates the people that pay $5 for their beer and talk versus the ones that count the money at the end of the night. Continue reading
