Go play in the street - Cars abandoned King Street on Sunday, resulting in one of the busiest days the area has seen in some time. King Street was closed to non-motorized traffic on Sunday afternoon in "Do the Charleston" -- an event that took seven months of planning and negotiating and allowed pedestrians the run of the street between Calhoun and Queen streets. One of the organizers, Kristin Walker said it was "like the Italian tradition called 'passeggiata' where everybody dresses in their finest and strolls in the city in the evenings or on Sundays after church. We all get so disconnected in our daily lives." Pedestrians took over King Street on Sunday to "Do the Charleston," an event Mayor Joe Riley called a "smashing success." Continue reading
