Sorry yesterday was rough for you; I hope today was better. I've had plenty of rough days myself. Somehow Summer seems to have more of them...maybe because we are around each other more and our schedule is constantly changing unlike the school year? When those moments happen, I tell myself that as long as I'm not parenting as badly as Betty Draper, then I'm doing okay.
On the flip side, your block is beautiful. Can't wait to see the others. Your children will always remember all of the wonderful things you make and do for them.
Eight to go
Yesterday was a parenting fail. I feel like acknowledging that because I don't want you to think it's all rainbows and sunshine here. I'm human, after all. And I know that we all have those days. Well, I know that I do. And if you don't, then please tell me your secret. I could use some help f...
What wonderful gifts! I need to track down those candy canes, because the natural ones I got were not good at all.
The Handmades: Edibles!
Being away from home for the first half of December meant there was a lot less holiday baking than usual. But oh, I just couldn't make it through a holiday season without a little bit of peppermint bark. So, among a few other things we squeezed in, there was one epic triple-the-recipe...

I also put a link in my food gifts, part 2 post.
More Teacher Gifts
A few days ago, I realized this is the last week of school before Winter Break. That meant I had to figure out teacher gifts and sew them up quickly. I decided to sew something small and fun I had wanted to make for a while, Erin's coffee
I rely on my candy thermometer, though Julia Child says not to trust it!

So
I got it last year for my birthday. They aren't being made anymore, but I contacted sent an email to someone who sometimes has them for sale and she knew someone who was selling one so I got it. I hope by the time I actually use mine, I can get extra ink. Come visit and we can play with it!

Ah,
Nice! I need something like this. My kids are obsessed with drawing and coloring right now.
Kids Crafting
I am sure almost everyone with kids has a lot of crafting supplies. It's best when the kids can go get what they want (and put it away!) all on their own. My kids have their crafting area in the kitchen eating area and what was once tidy and reasonable had ballooned into a really messy and hug...
I'm glad lumpy is cute. I have a feeling stuffing is in the future.
Reorganizing
My sewing area has been a disaster for far too long (as in months and months and months). It's not much fun to sew wedged in a tiny corner of your sewing table by a mountain of fabric and other sewing accoutrements. With holiday sewing fast approaching and a bunch of unlistened-to This American L...
Ely always wants the small pieces of fabric too. I like your ideas, Maya.

Our bedroom needs a major overhaul too. The previous owners painted the room with textured paint in a taupe color. Talk about yuck. I might use yellow again for the bedroom.

So far, it's working. Of course for the first week, I kept thinking it was too bright. Change, even good change, is hard to get used to.

Thanks! I'll look forward to your list (whenever it is).

Ah,
Oh sure. Any kind of nut will do, especially almonds.

Oh yes, me too. I love the way people use color.

Hi! I was just there yesterday, drooling over the new kokka fabrics.

Good for you! I love all the bold prints together. And your new banner is fun.
In my free time
The girls and I found ourselves at home with some extra free time last night after Jane's volleyball practice was canceled at the last minute. Dinner had been eaten and homework had been completed so they played and I sewed. There was no agenda - just a pile of scraps and some found time. ...
A virtual stitch in? The hardest part is going to be picking colors.

No, I'm not that fast of a reader! This list is from the past 4-5 months. I'm planning on publishing lists 3-4 times a year or whenever I feel like I have finished enough new books. I usually have a book going in the car and another on my bedside table, which helps me feel like I can finish something. I'm glad you are looking forward to the next one.
Booklog: August 2009
I'm reading Bad Mother by Ayelet Waldman. It was one of the books we discussed reading later this year or early next for my bookclub, but we thought someone should read it first
While, I haven't cut sugar out completely I have tried to cut down. And when I'm pregnant, I try to eat almost no sugar. There are a few simple ways to get rid of sugar, and yes when you start checking labels you are going to find sugar is in everything.
Here is what I do:
1. No coffee - I only do this when I'm really hardcore like when I'm pregnant because I have to have a little sugar in my coffee. Also if you have to have sugar in your tea, then quit tea.
2. Plain yogurt - everything else has sugar
3. Water as your only beverage - enough said
4. Make your own bread - almost all bread you buy at the store has sugar. Maybe not the artisan breads, but I would check just to be sure. So far I have't found a loaf of sandwich bread without sugar even at WF or TJ.
5. Fruit-sweetened jam - most jam is sweetened with sugar
6. No cereal - so many of these have sugar. I remember how I could only find one brand of Os for the baby that did not have any kind of sugar as an ingredient.
7. No crackers - again, a lot have sugar.
I think once you start to avoid desserts, you won't crave them as much and be out of your rut. You could also have a rule like the only desserts you can eat are homemade ones, which will also reduce your sugar intake because who has the time to make lots of homemade desserts?.
Keep us updated!
Sugar
So over the past year I've noticed that my and my family's sugar consumption has gone up up and up. It's so unhealthy and I especially don't want my kids asking for a dessert or a "treat" every day and Gus has gone from never asking to asking at least a couple of times a week. I think those di...
It looks so great! I don't see any of those "mistakes."
I didn't realize amazon had the new book up already - I never preorder books, but I want this one asap. When I met Natalie in May, she said the book will be out in Febuary, so maybe the wait won't be quite six months. I'm hoping she'll have a book signing at my LFS.
Also, thanks for the link :)
My Bloomers Skirt
I wore my skirt from the moment I finished it on Thursday until I went to bed that night. I got up on Friday morning and put it back on. Don't worry - Saturday it went in the laundry. I've had the Alabama Stitch Book since it came out - I think that was a year and half ago. And from the mom...
It's much easier the second time around. Even if it is harder, I think. The not-newness of the situation helps so much.

Garden Notes, End of August
You must read My Life in France by Julia Child. I just finished it, and it is a wonderful acoount of how Julia learned to cook and how she became a "cookery bookery" author as well as tv star. It will take me a long time to finish another read as good as Julia's memoir. The movie is also based on this book, as well as Julia and Julie.
Blackberry Clafoutis
On Saturday afternoon (I actually thought it was Sunday, hence the dishtowel, until Sunday morning arrived and I realized it was Sunday), I made a blackberry clafoutis with the blackberries and gorgeous organic eggs that Andy and his sister, Jen, who was visiting for the weekend, brought me fr...

The Most Wonderful Day of the Year
I'll work on it. She is constantly on the move, so it was hard to get even one decent one.
