I enjoy most coffee drinks. My husband Gene usually makes me a cappuccino most mornings. But, there is something about a great cup of coffee when you can find one. Then every so often, especially in the summer, I crave those mocha frapiccinos at Starbucks. Coffee is one of those wonder drinks don't you think so?
I Love Coffee... - A Giveaway
I'm wearing a hairnet. And I'm posting the photo on the internet for the world to see. And I'm pretty okay with it. WHO AM I?? I have a wonderful giveaway for you today. But let me just tell you how it came about. The Cuban Heritage Day Committee (of which I am a proud member) had a meeting a...

The Azabache. (MBFCF Giveaway #4)
Today's lesson in Cuban culture comes to you directly from Miami from my friend, Elena Santayana. Last year Elena was kind enough to share her family's "coming to America" story here on My Big, Fat, Cuban Family. Her family owns the beautiful jewelry store of the same name. Santayana Jewelers in...
Great reminder! Wish I was closer I'd come and take a few off your hands! Thanks for the georgeous photos. I love you more!
Lessons from the Garden
My roses are blooming. All of them. All at once. And although they look very beautiful, and some are quite spectacular, they require my attention. Right now. And it feels like quite an overwhelming task. But I'll grab my pruning shears and go through each bush, dead-heading as I go. It...
What an awesome gift! I live you all! MORE!

La Merienda (A giveaway)
It's around 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Lunch was over a few hours ago, but it's still too early for dinner and you're already hungry again. What do you do? You must have a tasty little snack in the afternoon to hold you over until dinner, of course. Growing up Cuban in the 60's and 70's, the th...
Well. I currently don't do merienda, but it sure sounds fun. Of coarse I'd choose you to do it with! I wish I was closer and we could do it. Hey, would they let us do it in the big orange balloon?! Have a blessed day today.

Well , I'd choose Sazon Orange! I'm no sure what I'd make but a grilled cheese sandwich-Ito sounds yummy! Just love the giveaways!
It's the Little Things (A Giveaway from IMUSA)
Growing up Cuban has always meant turning normal size things into the diminutive form. When there were Everest-sized mountains of sandwiches, they were called "bocaditos." Or "just a mouthful." Lies. It took more than "just a bite" to consume these particular delicacies. We don't just drink caf...

This Woman Deserves a Party...
My mom will be 98(!) next week. This means it's time to plan a party. For obvious reasons it won't be a surprise party. ;-) I'd love to share your birthday greetings with her. Please leave a comment on this post in English or Spanish. I know Luza will be thrilled to hear from you.
I ❥ on FB!!!
Orange(!) is the new black. (A Giveaway)
I am waiting (a little impatiently) for my fabulous new kitchen appliances to be delivered. I think we're still about a week out from that. You would think I'd be totally content now since I'm getting all new appliances, but you know how it is, suddenly everything starts looking like it needs up...
I love rice! Especially the La Bomba rice from La Tienda! I think you turned me on to it! As far as Christmas goes, we usually go to our children's homes and so we have whatever they serve (Christmas Eve) usually breakfast and a soup at dinner. Christmas day I usually make Lasagna, however I have been known to make arroz con pollo which is my favorite rice dish...and of coarse it is your recipe! This is a fantastic give-a-way and I hope I win! Love you Marti!
For the Love of Rice. (A Cuban Christmas Giveaway)
As we're nearing the holiday countdown and making all the preparations, I'm all about making lists. I have a book with the following lists: My Christmas List My Crema de Vie Recipient List My Menu List My Grocery Shopping List My Stocking Stuffer List My Christmas Card List My Decorating List M...
I love the pictures!! Especially the one that is connected to me! I remember we (or I) use to "collect" ash trays! Wonderful post!
The Neon Boneyard Adventure
Eric and I just got back from a really fun getaway to Las Vegas. As you know, we go to Vegas a few times a year (because we can, and because my very favorite childhood hearthrob lives very close to there. *sigh*). And we pretty much know the place by heart. We have seen lots of great shows there...
So...We only eat Jiff in our household! I never ate Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches at school. And I really don't like the two together. (I hear the moans!) But I love Jiff Peanut Butter. I usually have it on toast or in a sandwich all by itself! And I have to have a diet coke along with it! My husband eats it right out of the jar with a spoon! (which I have been known to do!) But here is a cute story....when my little grandson comes over he immediately goes to the cupboard and opens the door. The then proceeds to find the Jiff peanut butter and struggle to bring it to me. (he's 1 1/2 so the big peanut butter (especially if it is new and full) is a little heavy for him to manage). He brings it to me and asks "pease" which means please. He wants his own spoon of peanut butter to eat! Before he could talk he would do this and when I took the jar he would do a sign language for "more" wanting some! It is one of the things I really look forward to when he comes over! I hope he never out grows it! Anyway...great post! I hope I win...but...win or loose, I will be eating Jiff Peanut Butter!
Peanut Butter and Jelly Time (A Giveaway)
I have to admit that when I was a child I didn't ever get peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in my lunch. And even though I usually got some kind of Cuban-food-of-awesomeness-leftover in my Barbie lunchbox, I confess that I was jealous of my little American counterparts who found those crustless...
I love reading your blog!!!! Just because I love you MORE! Congratulations on 5 years! Here's to many, many more!
Five. (A giveaway)
I sat down at my computer on October 1st, 2006 and wrote out my very first blog post with the title, "Life on the hyphen..." You're welcome to click over and read it. I lifted that post title from a book written by my friend, Gustavo Perez-Firmat, called Life on the Hyphen: The Cuban-American W...
My sweet husband makes me a latte drink every morning using his Gaggia machine. When he's not here he leaves a press pot ready for me to add hot water to. Whenever I make it it never tastes the same. When he is here in the afternoon he makes Cuban coffee fore me with "killer espuma". Every now and then I try myself but it never tastes as great! So, I love it when my husband "taka taka's"! I would really love the cups!!!!
National Coffee Day - It's "taka taka" time! (A Coffee Giveaway, too.)
Don't ask me how I know these things. I just do. This is one of those geeky things that has gotten stuck in my brain and screams to be celebrated. Like Hobbit Day, which we always celebrate elaborately. Or like Pi Day, which also happens to be Albert Einstein's birthday. Or even Star Wars Day (...
I think The Lion King is my favorite Disney Movie! When it originally came out I don't remember taking the kids to see it. I don't know why, except they were a little older. But this time we were very excited to take our grand daughter, CJ, to see it! I really appreciated that the theater had kid size glasses for her. (thank you Disney!) Even though we know the story, it was amazing to see it on the big screen! I truly wish they (general "they") would put more old movies out in the theater...but I guess that is not important right now...(hint Disney....please re-release your movies on the big screen!) We couldn't wait to pick CJ up from school last Friday and rush her off to the movies! We just made it for the showing and she was truly thrilled! (as were we!) We love the music and I especially...ahem....SCAR! I know, I'm always so DARK! I can't help it, Scar is my favorite! Of coarse, I don't let my 5 year old grand daughter know that. Anyway, I love the movie and LOVE that they put it out again. We shared a bucket of popcorn and had a magical afternoon! Thanks Disney for the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful, thank you Marti for sharing that they were re-releasing it! Do it again real soon!
P.S. We really love talking in movie language! "What's going on here?" "You know her...she knows you...and she wants to EAT him....AND we're ok with that?" LOL
P.P.S. We saw Nightmare Before Christmas a year or so ago in Downtown Disney. They and turned it into 3D. This movie was a big improvement over that one! The 3D didn't give me a headache and it seemed to be a natural feel. I forgot I was watching 3D! It looked beautiful and realistic as opposed to TNBC which was not as fun to watch. (just my 2 cents)
The Circle of Life - Lion King 3D and Eternal Disney Uber-geeks
Back in 1994, I took Amy and Adam to the premiere of the Disney film, The Lion King at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. This was obviously before Lucy and Jonathan were born. We all loved the film so much that we couldn't wait to own it when it was released on VHS. (Yes, this is waaay back i...

I Have a (Cuban) Superpower
I get my nails done regularly. What I mean by that is that I usually get a regular manicure and pedicure at my local nail salon. And, yes, I suppose I could just buy some polish and paint them myself, but I really enjoy taking the time and pampering myself that way. (Or I may just be shallow and...
As you know, ORANGE is my favorite color! I'd make your Arroz con Pollo recipe. Or maybe my awesome Jumbalaya recipe or my spaghetti sauce! Whatever I choose it would taste wonderful!!! Did I mention you are beautiful?! I love you MORE!
What do you do with an empty (ORANGE!) caldero? (A recipe and giveaway)
Let me tell you about the big plans I had for this past week when I got back from Texas: I was going to cook a big, fat pot of arroz con pollo. I was going to cook it in my new big, fat ORANGE (!) caldero from IMUSA USA (which totally matches my Fiesta dishes, but that's not important right now...
I just love your Cuban coffee! Gene has gotten pretty good at doing the espuma I'm sure it isn't as killer as yours! In fact, I wish he was here to make me some! I love the red set....it matches my kitchen! Anyway...thanks for sharing your life with us all. We love your stories and amazing pictures! I love you MORE!
How to make Cuban coffee with KILLER espuma. You're welcome.
Making Cuban coffee is more art than science. I think I learned how to make Cuban coffee when I was about 8 years old and able to maneuver in the kitchen without hurting anything. It wasn't just a matter of making the coffee itself, there had to be a frothy topping to that café and just the righ...
I love this post!
The Bible - the Original Novela
As you know, my mom is 97. I always feel compelled to tell her age when I'm writing about her because: It makes the story I'm about to tell that much more amazing. Nobody makes 97 year olds anymore like the one that happens to be my mother. ;-) Luza (my 97 year old mom - See? I did it again) i...
I agree with Luza! She is way better looking and I would never wear that hat! Gene says "never try and force the ring on. Just put as far as you can do then let the gal finish" (Pastors always know the secret wedding tips!)
Old Ladies in Hats and Royal Weddings
If I were to write about The Royal Wedding, I’m sure you’d be (rightly) thinking about the wedding that took place just yesterday, April 29, 2011 in England between Prince William and his lovely bride, Kate Middleton. Back in the day.... July 29, 1981, the Royal Wedding was all about the yo...
I COMPLETELY agree with your mom!!! And great app! :-D
El Bix - A Cuban cure for all that ails you
There's a snotty-hacking-coughing-feverish-fluish thing going around here. It's not just a common cold, either. And the cough seems to hang in and stay for weeks. My sister, Helen had it on my mom's birthday a few weeks ago. (She's still coughing.) And then Jonathan got it. (He's still coughing....
I guess if I were a chef I'd be known for my amazing Pamagranate Jelly. I'm told it's pretty good! ;-D Dont believe me? http://www.mybigfatcubanfamily.com/my_big_fat_cuban_family/2010/12/the-pamagranate.html
I wonder how I could make it Cuban? I'd love to win the book!
Sabor! Cuban Cookbook - A Hot Giveaway
My beautiful friend, Ana Quincoces, has authored an equally beautiful Cuban cookbook. (I say equally, only because the pages are filled with fabulous photos of both her and her food, and I can't think of which is more gorgeous, but that's not important right now.) Just recently, Ana was voted Mi...
