This is PRECISELY why Zuckerberg set up his corporate charter so he controlled 57% of the voting rights in Facebook REGARDLESS of the shares he owns.NO ONE can kick him out of his company. Price should have done the same.The VC's don't care about the artists or the customers,just the profit.When the "money first" crew takes over,everybody else gets screwed.Tunecore has just been "Romneyized".

The problem isn't Spotify per se. The problem is that the prospective "customers" of the music being produced today don't perceive any value in the music. They're not hearing anything that's worthy of purchase,especially in these turbulent economic time. Quality music will sell. The majors just aren't making any.Adele is having any problem moving units. Maybe someone in charge should take notice.

Facebook is going to go the same way Myspace did the closer they get to an I.P.O and have to show a profit. People left Myspace because of the ads and the obnoxious promotions. Murdoch tried to turn a profit,but people don't go to social media sites to buy anything, they're there to SOCIALIZE.Myspace may have succeeded if they had uniformity in the pages,and disallowed all the flash when you visited a music page,but all the ads really got on people's nerves,and that's the only way Facebook is going to turn a profit. When the guys at Facebook have to face investors,they are going to have to increase ad space.It's their only source of revenue.Most people now are getting info on new music from friends and Youtube.We indies have to figure out a better way to gain exposure since the majors still control the airwaves.

The music business has two choices...acquiesce to the desires of the kids who won't pay,or start producing more music for Jazz,Country and R&B fans who want that physical cd in their hands.WE all know fans of those genres don't like to download,so why don't we produce what we can sell? There's no point in producing a product no one wants to pay for.

NO ONE goes on social media sites to make purchases,and therein lies the problem. Murdoch tried to make a profit,but nobody on the site is buying anything. Advertisers on Facebook will do the same when they realize there's no "click-throughs" to purchase products. Whether they want to admit it or not,Myspace and Facebook have the same business model as the newspapers:sell advertising. The newspapers aren't doing so hot on that front,and the same goes for the "social" websites. NO ONE I know goes on Facebook to buy anything. Do you?

I think it depends on the genre. R&B, Jazz, and Country fans don't like to download and want that physical cd in their hands. Maybe that's the markets we should be concentrating on.

Steve Stoute has his head up his rear end! The Grammys aren't based on sales, they're based on artistic excellence. To say just because something sells well that it should be rewarded is ridiculous! That's like saying crack dealers should be applauded because their product sells for more money then aspirin! Crack is popular. Should we recognize it as being good for you? Beiber's "music" is aural crack, it's just pop garbage! Just because an artist has had a MARKETING impact doesn't make him artistically viable. What you Beiber lovers are saying is because a bunch of pre-teen airheads bought millions of his "product" that that somehow equates to artistic viability. Beiber is a commodity, just like shoes, or tires or oatmeal. If a twelve year old thinks Bieber is artistically superior to Esperanza, maybe that's why America's kids rank 32nd in scholastic aptitude. McDonald's low quality food has had an impact on American culture greater than ANY recording artist. Does that mean all the “SUPERSIZERS that eat that garbage are now qualified to run Le Cordon Bleue?

I do believe you can copyright the physical recording with a cd,and you can have up to one hour and 20 minutes worth of music on it .If you can't afford the $35 to do each song ,you can pay $35.00 to copyright the cd until you generate some income.

Local is irrelevant (unless you're selling tickets to live shows) because of the internet. If you're living in your mom's basement in Podunk, Idaho, write a song people like,put the video up on Youtube and can get traffic to it,you can make sales on Itunes, and maybe even interest a major with big bucks to invest for further promotion. I personally prefer cds, but I'm in the minority. This is now a singles driven environment,and very few people are putting up big numbers with cd sales.I don't like it (I'd rather sell concept cds) but I have to deal with things as they are and not how I'd like them to be.Indie stores are dying because Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target are skimming the hits and selling them as loss leaders, and the mom & pop shops can't sell their cd's for as low as the "Big-Box" stores can.I miss Tower Records.I listen to Jazz and Brazilian music,so I have to order what i want from Amazon.I remember in High school (in the early eighties),we'd spend our time at a record store going over stuff we'd never heard,and looking to see what's new. Kids can't do that today. Big box shelf space only holds the top Billboard hits,and that's all. The industry killed itself with too many "one hit and a bunch of sh*t" cds.I don't have an answer as to how to fix it. I think it's a done deal,and it's Itunes or something like Spotify and that's it.

Facebook is 300 million people doing a whole lot of nothing! I don't care if your kid is potty trained,nor do I want to see pictures of your boring a** family barbecue or be friends with your mom.Facebook sucks,and as soon as they burn through the Russian money,it's Chapter 11. NO ONE is on Facebook to buy anything,and the advertisers know this. When was the last time anyone you know bought something advertised on Facebook? With the latest phony click-thru numbers revealed,it's just a matter of time.

He can't do any worse than the so called A&R "experts" at the major labels.The majors only profit from 5% of the artists they sign,and it's ALWAYS been that way.A chimp with darts can hit the target 5% of the time. The majors have NEVER known what they were doing,they just had monopolistic control of distribution and airplay.With the advent of the internet,music fans now have more choices and don't have to listen to only major label product. When fans started seeing what else was available,they ran to it.The major labels are full of incredible arrogance,and their A&R choices based on who they know and refusing to listen to artists that aren't controlled by their friends are showing just how stupid their business model is.They can't force their product down people's throats anymore,and instead of stepping up their game,they want to whine about it.I pray they're out of business soon,'cause they aren't helping anyone but themselves,and that spells bankruptcy. GOOD RIDDANCE.

When was the last time YOU bought something from an advertiser on Facebook? When the Russian money runs out Facebook is dead meat.I don't want to hear about your boring life,or that your kid is now potty trained or be friends with your mom.MySpace is far from dead,and Rupert (even though I don't care for him) will make it profitable.If you don't like the frenetic pace of Myspace,take your old boring a** to Facebook and stay there,while you can. Facebook is like the Lawrence Welk of the internet.Terminally boring.Next thing you know they'll be having polka contests and advertising Metamucil. NOONE on Facebook is BUYING anything,just 300 million window shoppers.Do you really think those 180-200 million non-American Facebook members are buying anything from the advertisers? When the advertisers realize there's no ROI (return on investment) for their advertising dollars,they'll stop advertising.Most business know you make 80% of your business from 20% of your customers.What's the click-thru rate for the people on Facebook? What are these soccer moms buying from Facebook advertisers? I rest my case.

Social networks only work for someone who's trying to sell something.If you've got a new cd,or a new movie,or a new comedy tour,social networks are the ONLY way to spread the word unless you've got millions of dollars in your marketing budget. If you're on Myspace or Facebook to get laid,you've got a problem. There's no other way to interact with MILLIONS of potential buyers in an efficient,less time consuming manner. When you've already built your band and people are coming to you for more,it's easier to walk away. But if you're trying to build your band,your fan base,and your worldwide reputation,you have no choice.He wouldn't be walking away if his band weren't already successful.

Facebook is 300 million people doing a whole lot of nothing. If Zuckerberg hadn't suckered the Russians out of $200 million to keep going,he'd be laying off too. There's no way to monetize these social websites because people aren't on them to buy anything. They're there to socialize with their friends. I doubt if the advertisers are realizing any ROI (return on investment) and are pulling back. Face book is just trying to build up numbers so they can dump this on someone else for a profit,just like the guys at Myspace did with Rupert Murdoch, but the big money boys have seen Rupert is losing money,and I doubt if Facebook is going to find a buyer.If Facebook is such a good investment,why didn't Bill Gates put any more money into it? Myspace is still king for new music,movies, and comedy. I just don't know how long they can last if they don't start charging bands for their pages.
