I had good intentions this morning of getting up and hitting the West Oaks ride. Well that did not happen, sleep was the winner. All was not lost as I hit the 09:00 am WOD at Bayou City CrossFit. And what a beautiful day it turned out to be. The WOD was about as straight ahead as they come, a nice dose of met con and body weight movements. And major props to my bud Vic Sr. for kicking it on the 400m cool down run! Buy In 20 - Air Squats 400m Run WOD: 10/24/09 -- Met Con /... Continue reading

Yes 21 burpees was a ton of fun, but it was for a good birthday cause! And you got to feast on lobster tonight, so see it all worked out in the end.

Tonight my friend Mattison G. (follow her on Twitter -- click here) celebrated a portion of her birthday at CrossFit. As tradition would have it you are supposed to do the amount of burpees that represents your age. What a way to recognize your birthday! So thanks to this event Vic felt that it was appropriate for all of us to be a part of the celebration so we also participated, Vic's nice that way. :) All and all it was a solid WOD but my medicine ball cleans still need tons of work. What a shock, me and bad... Continue reading

Over the years one of my favorite training rides is the one that takes place out of West End Bicycles at 6pm. Next to the Death Ride, it's the fast thing out there for an evening group ride. It had been over a year since I last hit this ride and I swear it's gotten faster. All the regular Hoss Dudes were there, lot's of strong Cat 2s and 3s with assorted other strong riders mixed in for good measure. My team (Bikesport) had over 10 guys there tonight which was cool. All the BSP guys looked strong tonight, with... Continue reading

"Pain, without love Pain, I can't get enough Pain, I like it rough 'Cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all" Pain // Three Days Grace I don't think that Three Days Grace was thinking of CrossFit when they wrote the above, but it certainly applied the last several weeks. You come to a point where it's a matter of pushing past the nagging little gripes that your body hits you with. It comes to a point where mental toughness comes into play and it's mind over matter. What I'm not suggesting is not listening to real aches and... Continue reading

I could not have asked for a better day to go for a long ride. It all came together in a traditional 59 email spam string between my friends hashing out details. It's more abuse than substance but it's all good fun. The weapon of choice today was a cyclocross bike due to the terrain, which consists of unimproved gravel roads on top of the reservoir/dam. What makes this route great is that a good portion of it is wide open with virtually no traffic. As with every dam ride it's like you have a perpetual headwind which is always... Continue reading

I love reality, it's always there to present it's self at the least opportune times. And this morning it was up before I was, waiting to jar me back like an Arctic ice bath. Today was the culmination of two weeks of hard WODs/competition, end of fiscal year work stress, and crap nutrition. As I looked at the board my semi-awake brain tried to process what was in store for me. The stubborn side of me which tends to win, said "hey, I've got this covered", but not with that reality monkey riding me like a stolen bicycle. Mid way... Continue reading

It's a love hate relationship with metabolic conditioning. You spend a good portion of the workout at either an anaerobic threshold or a threshold state. There is limited recovery as you are switching between movements. The benefit of this style of training is that helps increase the body's ability to use oxygen more efficiently. This is a huge benefit as it relates to doing functional movements. Ultimately it allows you to do a higher capacity of work at a more intense level. Met Cons are very effective but while doing them they hurt like hell. Today's WOD was a team... Continue reading

Seriously, is there any Olympic Lift harder than an overhead squat? Granted I'm light years away from having good repeatable form, but bloody hell these damn things kill me every time. My biggest challenge is the lack of flexibility which translates into an inability to complete the movement. It's like trying to bend a steel rod. I think Yoga might be in my future as much as I keep trying to fight it. To compound matters when I looked at the board I knew that I would have to scale this workout. I guess there are greater travesties in life,... Continue reading

"I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed." // Michael Jordan Coming off the weekends' competition I had a ton of things swimming around in my head. With two plus months of CrossFit under my belt, I re-learned that it's a really long road. My heart knows where I want to go, I just need to remember that my perspective is that of a... Ouch! Nothing like a CrossFit competition to re-align my perspective of fitness. Today I had the opportunity to watch elite athletes and regular people compete in the Oktoberfest Obliteration. It was truly a great experience. There were three different categories that you could enter: Standard (RX), Scaled, Team. I entered into the Scaled group as I wanted to set a benchmark for where I am two plus months into doing CrossFit. Well I got my answer and it was eye opening to say the least. WOD: 10/10/09 - Oktoberfest Obliteration 400m Run 15 - Thrusters @ 95 lbs. 500m Row... Continue reading

This is my second time doing The Chief WOD, the first time I did it was just over 3 weeks ago in Chicago. The weight went up but my overall volume went down. I was still waxed from yesterday but glad that I knocked out the workout. Buy In 15 - Push ups 15 - Pull ups 400m Run WOD: 10/06/09 -- The Chief (Bayou City CrossFit) 3 - Power Cleans @ 95 lbs. "No great achievement is possible without persistent work.” // Bertrand Russell After this past weekend's in-house throwdown, it was clear that I have a long way to go. In fact on Sunday I was wondering if I'll have an RX'ed workout before the end of the year. For those who might not know, an RX'ed workout is doing it at the prescribed weight for men or ladies. Typically it's been a scaled (adjusted weight) workout for me over the past two months. With Olympic Lifting (power movements) being my weakness, I have been setting small goals to get to the... Vic and company threw a little something at the regular cast of characters this past Saturday. Bayou City CrossFit's monthly in-house competition. This is a style of WOD (power/strength) that one day I'll do well, post numbers that are respectable, and gain a serious level of fitness. What I like best about this goal is that I don't have the body type and on average am older than most people by a pretty good margin. Beyond that it means ultimately that I put in the hard work to achieve it. To cut myself a wee bit of slack I've only... Continue reading

No little blog I've not forgotten about you, but the travel - work combo was a bit relentless. Over the course of the past three weeks, I've had the opportunity to travel to three different CrossFit affiliates. This is one of the best parts of travel, as I enjoy meeting people and working out in new locations. The first part of my travel had me in Chicago for 10 days, which felt like an eternity. While there I was able to hit three different boxes: CrossFit Chicago It was an early Saturday morning as I rolled into the box. The... Continue reading

I think that I'm a wee bit off my rocker as I look forward to Saturday's the most. On this day there is always a skills session followed by the workout of the day. Today started off with work being done on my clean technique. Did several rounds of this working on my form. This is a movement that I need to get down as it's used quite often in CrossFit workouts. Next on list of skill work, I wanted to see if I could improve my one rep max / Deadlift. Thanks for Vic's ummm "motivational" techniques I knocked... Continue reading

"Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point." // C.S. Lewis 09/11 has me reflecting on the importance of life and those who gave theirs needlessly. The courage that the men and women showed in the face of shear danger is staggering just thinking about it. My thoughts and prayers go out to those families that mourn the loss of their loved ones. "I've always got such high expectations for myself. I'm aware of them, but I can't relax them." // Mary Decker Stanley Setting expectations and meeting them can be a challenging thing, with that said I think the above quote sums it up perfectly. Today's workout yet again reaffirmed that CrossFit is a never ending challenge that is now driving me forward. It is helping me to reshape my goals personally and professionally. Each workout is a new personal battle as I move towards achieving the RX (prescribed weight for each movement/activity). It will happen because I believe and am committed/driven... Continue reading

I'm now 30 days into CrossFit training and the Paleo (Caveman) Diet, so far so good. In the course of 30 days I've lost 12.4 lbs., begun to regain some semblance of fitness, and have started to add a microscopic amount of muscle mass. One minor mile marker passed and headed to the 60 day mark. It's going to be an interesting 30 days as I'm traveling 70% of that time. Today I needed to get my workout in early due to other commitments later in the day. Because of this I attended the 6:05 am class at Bayou City... Continue reading

While last week was fun touring the CrossFits in NoCal and Utah, a dose of hard was served up to me today as I returned to Bayou City CrossFit. I've got to be honest as I went a bit off the reservation on Sunday and my Paleo Diet was kicked by the wayside (great blog on Paleo ... click me!). It started off just after I landed as we went and tried a new Mexican restaurant, while I did not get crazy here - the post foodfest was a bit different. Our next stop, The Tap Inn. OK, OK, it's...
