Interests: I love gerber daisies, clouds and thunderstorms. I love the smells of baking bread and popping popcorn and lilacs in the springtime. I love a song with good rhythm and cars that will go fast fast fast; unfortunately for me, my car goes slow, slower then slowest.

These cookies look so good. I'm wondering how they would taste with an orange flavored icing? Thanks for the recommendation for these cookies.
Tuesdays with Dorie: Gingered Carrot Cookies
Thanks to Natalia of gratti e fili farina for her Tuesdays with Dorie pick of Gingered Carrot Cookies, found on page 162 of Dorie Greenspan's Baking from My Home to Yours cookbook. Natalia has the recipe posted on her site here. Thanks, Natalia for a great pick, we all loved these cookies,...
What a fun project. This will help us all take a break and go to our vacation spot in our minds if nothing else is available.
Make A Cute Model Of Your Dream Vacation Destination! (Using Recycled Materials, Of Course!)
As it turns out, something is in the air, and imaginative little villages of all kinds seem to be sprouting up all over blog land! So you won't be surprised to see that we also made this little village a while back, and have just been waiting for the right time to share it with you! You'll Nee...
I'm, or I am. Really I can type. Really I can.
Mid-Century Pretty ~
For once, the sun streamed in the windows, pools of light played over the entire room, catching the muted tones of fabrics and decor items born at least 60 years ago. It's been a rainy, windy summer, which is probably why I caught the bug to add color. Hardwood floors, neutral colored walls...
Your spaces are inspirational. I'm loving your shelves, shadowboxes, and I''m finding myself wondering how I can add some button detailing to my pillows. Love it!

Just a few things I love for what they are:
songbirds
exceptional children's books
the comfiest flip-flops I have ever owned - they are cushioned with a thin layer of pillowy softness - aaaaaaaaahhh
a certain boy who turns 8 today
music. I should look up the author of this quote, but whoever said it, said it well:
"Music washes away the dust of everyday living."
Thanks for another happy and gentle post. Love the hen named Buttercream! And those cupcakes are truly a work of art.
for what they are

MacBeth in the park - I love the idea of that! Your description of visiting the Amish community reminds me of the couple times I was able to go to Lancaster County while living in PA. I was so impressed with their homes and fields - so orderly. Some of the best food I've ever ordered was at the restaurant there. I believe it was staffed by local people (not the Amish themselves), but featured Amish recipes. So simple and so good!
Highlights of July
July was a beutiful month around here. It must have been wearing roller skates because it went by in a flash. I did manage to capture a few images. One of the activities I've done involve wading pools. I had been taking the children to a local pool until an unsavory event occurred. After li...
I'm always glad to find a new book to read. It may be possible to own too many books (though I personally doubt it), but it is never bad to have read too many books. At least that is my opinion. Thanks for the chance to win.
Gotta love it
If it's possible to fall in love with a $3 bunch of flowers, I have. These came from Friday's estate sale (along with the blue canning jars and, in the background, a very cool Replogle globe, and all of the dishes in this post) and I very nearly didn't buy them. They're handmade, out of metal...
These painted mailboxes remind me of being in New England for a few years. Up in New Hampshire a lot of people had slates hanging on their doors with some form of Welcome painted on them. They were a fun custom for that area of the country!
Slice Of Life: Painted Mailboxes
A walk around the neighborhood recently got me noticing some cute crafty mailboxes! The painterly bird on the far right has been catching me eye for years, and I'm so glad I finally was able to photograph it! A friend of mine painted the sweet floral on her mailbox, and the red and aqua versio...
That moose! That moose! I want that moose!
etsy love :: mint parcel
I just came across these very sweet illustrations + prints from local designer mint parcel ... LOVE the superhero illustrations -- I think I might need to get one for Ike. See her Etsy shop here.
These are really great shots of a very humble bird - a type regularly overlooked. I love birds. I just can't imagine the world without them.

Oh these are classy! The idea of creating earrings from crochet never occurred to me. These delicate earrings remind me of tatting - a dying art I believe.
The top pair where both the beads and elongated parts look as if they are crocheted are the pair I like best. My, they really are lovely. Whoever wins these will be very lucky.
Fair Trade Friday giveaway-- sterling silver hand crocheted earrrings (gorgeous!)
Nothing like completely changing pace here- from summer camp to elegant earrings. But aren't they gorgeous too! I think they look like summer and water. They are hand-crocheted out of sterling silver wire by Peruvian jewelry craftsman, Milagros Estrada. Handmade in and fairly traded from Per...
Aren't trips to the museum wonderful? I live quite close to a similar museum of life sciences. One of my favorite things there is the butterfly display. They have organized their collection of butterflies in the shape of a butterfly - it is memorable. They must have 2 of every kind of butterfly to get that kind of symmetry you find in a butterfly's wings.
day at the museum
What do you do when it's 98 degrees with 88% humidity, you're broke and you've got no car to escape with? Head to a free, air conditioned museum (and you love the half hour freezing cold bus ride you took to get there). You then proceed to m...
Darling ladybug creations! In answer to your question, I really love the way the cupcakes photograph (good grief - listen to me - talking about cupcakes as if they were models) with the professional method. But when it comes to eating them, I find this amount of frosting just a bit overwhelming. I guess I could say that I like to *look at* those frosted with a bag and tip, and I like to *eat* those frosted by hand, if that makes any sense at all.
Ladybug Cupcakes
When the kids and I found out cousin Luke was having his 2nd birthday party last week, we were so excited! Luke is little brother to Hannah, my boys' best bud. Hannah was one of the first people to ever receive baked goods from me! Last year for her birthday, I made her some cupcakes. She...

Fun With Wax Paper: Pressed Leaf And Flower Art!
Here's another great craft activity using just wax paper and fresh leaves and flowers! This activity has two parts, making it that much more fun, and time consuming, usually a good thing right about now? First take a nature walk and collect leaves and flowers, and then use the things you've co...
I'm guessing Chicago from that hot dog picture. If I am right, is it true that most Chicagoans feel that the perfect hot dog is a bun, a weiner and mustard? Or am I getting that confused with New York?
Hello, Redesign! And guess where Boots went off to next.
I am totally excited about this. Yesterday I decided that it was high time the blog get a bit of a redesign - it's looked basically the same (well, the banners have changed) since we started it in 2005, and I'd finally gotten sick of narrow lines of text and 30 pixels on the right-hand side of ...
Tasting:

five senses friday
Hello out there! Happy Friday to all of you. For those of you who are new readers (or maybe never understood what I was blabbing about) five senses friday was started years ago by my friend, Shari Altman. I use it weekly as way to sit down and reflect on what the past days...
Sara, this is the perfect illustration that inspiration for any craft can come from anywhere. I don't think I'd look at a pizza box and ever think robot, but I'm glad you did! Such a lovable and colorful robot it turned out to be too.
A Pizza Box Top Robot!
Last week as I was cleaning up after my daughter's birthday pizza party, I was about to throw away the pizza boxes since they seemed to be a bit too soiled to salvage, but then my better sense took a hold of me and I realized that the tops of two of the boxes were actually clean so......I ripp...
I just saw your no bake petit fours over at a southern fairy tale - too too too cute! This is gonna become a family favorite, I can tell! And I'll be happy cuz I can dream up new ways to use this idea each year and keep my creativity going.
First Birthday Cake (and a blog party)
When Allison from O My Family told me her gorgeous little man was celebrating his first birthday soon, I knew immediately that I wanted to make him a cake. When she sent me her invite, I was smitten. It was classically beautiful, had wonderful color, and the most simple, perfect design. (thi...

Best of luck to you with your new etsy shop!
allow me to properly introduce you
On Friday afternoon I slipped over to Etsy and took the steps necessary to open up a new shop, one in which all of my artful delights can be found. It feels like the right time to give this part of me a home of it's own. Under the Maple Tree came to be as that is where I am lucky enough to do ...
I love that you are always thinking of ways to incorporate new experiences into the lives of your children. It is inspiring.
Slice Of Life: A Bird House With A View!
About a five minute walk from our home, there is a residence perched on the hill with a wonderful backyard filled with fruit trees (pomegranite, fig, etrog, grapes to name a few) and a chicken coop to boot. The other day I noticed this rustic structure perched high above their patio, and marve...
I had to chuckle when I saw the title of your post. We had 2 dogs while growing up, one we called Licky (short for Licorice)and the other was Taffy. Oh, and let's not forget the guinea pigs - one brown, one white, one tan. Names? Brownie, Marshmallow and Peanutbutter. Definitely a theme going on here!
3 kittens named after food.
These three sisters were delivered to us this week, thanks to my pet loving brother. We knew we wanted kittens, but weren't sure when, from where, you know—the details. We decided to just wait it out and just like our last beloved cats, who are no longer with us, these 3 just appeared in our l...
So true. It amazes me how easy it is to forget this simple lesson and end up frustrating both the parent and child. Thank you for the reminder.
teach the child
From a very early moment in my mothering career I 'got it' that if I didn't take the time to teach my child a job or task, there should be no expectation on my part that she would know how to do said job. For instance, bed making is a classic example. By age four (maybe younger?) Emily started ...
Your words remind me of a time we had an inversion here that lasted for weeks and weeks. We all longed for a slip of sunshine, but the trees wore garments of frost that outlined every single twig, pine needle and bit of bark. They were magical, and more like Narnia than I thought was possible.
THE EARTH TURNED TO THE FOG AND WHISPERED
As the grey skies continue to roll across the sky, rain coming in waves and the cold seeping through the house, the garden, the streets, and over the ocean, a small element of nature completes the wintery cold. A small piece of knitted woollen warmth, to wrap around cold bodies and embrace -...
