From what I've read, some incredibly wrong instructions were given to the jury by the judge (including that truth wasn't a defense to libel, which is so wrong it's like saying water doesn't make you wet), so expect it to get promptly kicked back for a new trial.
Me, I'm not sure how you can reconcile the idea that Ventura isn't a big enough POS to say what he said, but he IS a big enough POS to sue a vet's widow.
Jesse Ventura Has No Class
I know...big shock. But apparently he's an even bigger jerk than imagined. http://thisainthell.us/blog/?p=54255
Yeah, the pilot was an unmitigated disaster, but the last two episodes (now that they have REAL military consultants) were quite watchable.
Watch Enlisted tonight!
Also, you can play your own version of the Ranger Up Enlisted Drinking Game (for the pilot episode)... I have become a fan. It's like Scrubs meets M.A.S.H. run by Stripes.
11th ACR? Blackhorse?
Just hearing the name makes me want to dig through my David Drake pile and read some Slammers.
Father's Day- Vietnam version
Posted this last year and it seems appropriate again. Thanks for all of it Dad. A couple of pics of my Dad from his days in uniform. Vietnam 1st tour w/ the Big Red One And 2nd tour w/ 11th ACR Happy Father's Day and thanks for everything.
Judge Napolitano put it best yesterday on this subject -- "Something can be legal and unconstitutional at the same time." Right now, this looks like one of those situations -- it was plastered with the veneer of legality under the Patriot Act and the FISA rubber stamp, but at the same time, in its core, it was a blatant, obvious and intentional violation of the 4th Amendment. Why would he go to a Congressman with it when Congress is what gave it it's false legitimacy in the first place?
That makes him an oathkeeper and patriot.
NSA leaker "trained" to be Special Forces
The guy who dropped all the NSA info to the Guardian has poked his head up and it is sitting atop a pencil neck. While all of the surveillance being conducted is properly shocking nothing released so far shows any crimes. It is a stunningly far-reaching program that definitely should be quest...
I thought the exact same thing. Silhouette! Silhouette!
Photo: Optic Observation
U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. William Kavanagh uses the optic lens on his M4 carbine to scan the area in the Kajak district of Afghanistan's Helmand province, Feb. 8, 2013. Kavanagh, a company executive officer, is assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team...
Ugh. HDR fiasco. I would rather see a real-color version.
Christmas Cargo
U.S. Air Force loadmasters inside a C-130H aircraft prepare humanitarian goods destined for remote islands within the Micronesian Islands during the 61st anniversary of Operation Christmas Drop, Dec. 11, 2012. The loadmasters, are assigned to the 36th Airlift Squadron, Yokota Air Base, Japan. U...
I don't think there is anything that is a bona fide secret in it, or frankly, they would be going the criminal prosecution route rather than the "strongly worded letter" route.
Classified info revealed by bin Laden raid book
Well there is a shocker. DoD sent him a letter informing him that he had screwed the pooch. The letter, addressed to "Mark Owen," the pseudonym under which the book was written, identified two separate non-disclosure agreements he signed with the Navy that legally committed him to never divulge ...
If you have to explain your apology, it's not an apology.
When it comes to politics, you act like a dick -- top to bottom. It's not healthy.
Setting aside anger for something that I hope is a little more kind. (Or: when I break my own law)
A few days ago, I Twittered: "I can't stop laughing at the bigots who celebrated their solidarity with each other by gorging themselves on shitty fast food. Bravo, jerks." I still think it's silly that eating at a fast food restaurant is considered political activism today, but that's not what t...
Usually, when I have to explain to someone that they misunderstood me when they thought I was being a dick... I really was being a dick.

This week's new episode of Tabletop is online for your happy funtime enjoyment: If the embed isn't working, or you want to see this in glorious SUPER MEGA HD, I've got you covered, because I love you. A few notes: * We have no control over the ads that run during Tabletop, so it's likely that y...
Wil, I wish you would just stay away from politics in general. Saying that you have no control over the ads is fine. Peppering in comments about the ad being "bullshit" and "gross" is like taking a big dump on the head of all your fans who don't agree with you on this particular point. It's demeaning.
You're normally a great guy, especially on gaming and geekdom (which is why I come here.) But when it comes to politics, it's like you turn from Wil to Parrish. It's not a good look, dude.
The motto at the top of the blog says "Don't be a dick!" You're not 100% on that one, yet.

9 year old boy donates Disney trip he earned to family of fallen soldier
This is one of the nicest stories I’ve seen in a while. And it says a lot, not just about the young boy involved, but his family: A 9-year-old Massachusetts boy who earned an all-expenses-paid Disney World vacation through an innovative Facebook experiment gave the trip away to the family of a...
Give him a break, he thought Idiocracy was a documentary when he was making it.
D-list actor compares “Act of Valor” to Nazi propaganda film
This yahoo feels entitled to spout his nonsense, and I feel just as entitled to respond: Star of TV’s Parenthood, Dax Shepard, compared the pro-U.S. military film that stars actual Navy SEALs, Act of Valor to Adolf Hitler’s Triumph of the Will. On his Twitter feed the one time Ashton Kutcher pr...
I won't be there, but I would like to know what your name-droppiest story would sound like. Not name droppy like hollywood, but geek name droppy.
I have a very important question for everyone attending JoCo Cruise Crazy 2.
Saturday, I'm heading down to America's Wang to get on a boat, because JoCoCruseCrazy 2: Cruise Crazier is setting sail on Sunday. I hope that it lives up to this video that one of the cruisers (who named themselves Sea Monkeys) created: I know, right? Check out the video he made last year, bas...
Isn't this, at it's core, an admission by Axelrod that this administration actually thinks they had a choice?
Seriously, does anyone not on the far left think that there is any other option with Bin Laden than "kill or capture at any opportunity?"
Apparently, he thinks, "ehh, we'll wait a while and see what he does" was an option. If anything, this is a crushing indictment of Obama, not Romney, to think that this is even concievable.
Axelrod says Romney wouldn't have killed OBL
Tool doesn't even begin to describe complete ass-clown David Axelrod. WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama's top campaign strategist, David Axelrod, said Sunday that he doubts presidential candidate Mitt Romney would have had the courage to order the May raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan, that claime...
Sure would be nice to see how those speedboats hold up to a 3 second burst from R2D2.
Iran threatens US carrier
In related news, fleas threaten dog and gnat issues warning to horse. But hey, who am I to mock some rattling of sabers butter knives. As McQ noted below, here is the threat that has US naval forces cowering. "I advise, recommend and warn them (the Americans) over the return of this carrier to t...
I know what you are saying, but it's still the wrong direction. College != mature and responsible. (See: Any Current College Campus.) Military a plus makes perfect sense. College experience for offloader/maintenance? Insane. Two years of liberals arts and transferable classes for a degree you never got is not what I want from a guy working on steam fittings. I want a guy who knows what end of the wrench you hold onto.
Want jobs? Yeah, we got jobs!
As we are always for helping veterans here at BlackFive, I'm posting up some more positions for companies that are wanting to hire VETERANS for some really good jobs. This time, we take you to the great state of.... WYOMING! A buddy of mine has been setting up a new facility in Wyoming, and his ...
That either of these jobs list college as a plus is absolutely and totally insane. These are both "dirty jobs" in the Mike Rowe sense. Good work that makes civilized life possible for the rest of us... but they aren't something you go to college for.

All of your problems are now solved.
Ask An Infantryman - She Flies in Coach
Infantrymen, your sage counsel is sought! Dear Ask An Infantryman I have been dating "Claude" for eight months. We are planning a trip in the fall to visit his family's chateau in France. Claude has long legs and refuses to travel in coach because it's uncomfortable, so he will buy a business-c...

Wanat
A U.S. soldier looks out into the Waygul Valley from his fighting position while manning a .50-caliber machine gun in Wanat Village, Afghanistan, Sept. 22, 2011. The soldier is assigned to the 25th Infantry Division's 3rd Brigade. U.S. Army photo by Pfc. Zackary Root.
It's simple to me how he was caught. Profiling. And not by the FBI.
That sort of model flying is a fairly small community. You certainly don't just drop into the hobby and decide to start flying large, $20K dollar aircraft. For someone to show up, out of the blue, and order up the equivalent of three Ferraris as a starter car had to strike the shop owner as odd enough to warrant a call to the FBI.
JOURNAL: Terrorist UAV Bomber?
A self-activated Jihadi from the Boston area was arrested. His plot: to blow up a section of the Pentagon with several UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) ladden with C-4. He bought the plane. He also bought C-4, AK-47s, and grenades from FBI agents posing as suppliers. Not much of a threat. ...

For Fans of "Gunner Palace" and for all returning veterans...
Michael Tucker is a pal of us here at Blackfive and he has a follow up film coming out on Monday. Five years after filming the now classic Iraq War film GUNNER PALACE, directors Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein turn their focus on America in HOW TO FOLD A FLAG. They follow the same soldiers h...
"Paradigm shifts happen in science all the time."
Actually, this gets to the heart of it. If Oncologists called something a carcinogen, and then found that people taking in that substance were no longer getting cancer, they would change their stance.
When that happens in Climate "Science", they simply double down on the initial hypothesis. Carbon raises temperatures! Sorry, Charlie, carbon dioxide kept going up, but temps fell for a decade and are heavily correlated to solar activity. Hypothesis falsified. "Uh... no... it's climate change! Whatever happens, climate is going to change and kill us all!"
Yeah, but they keep changing their minds
Andrew Sullivan: From The Annals Of Sane Conservatism II "I'm not a meteorologist. All I know is 90 percent of the scientists say climate change is occurring. If 90 percent of the oncological community said something was causing cancer we'd listen to them," - Jon Huntsman, in Time. Fair enoug...

Phelps Wannabes Try To Mar Michael Murphy DDG-112 Dedication
As most of you know, DDG-112, the USS Michael Murphy, was dedicated yesterday. A ship named for a selfless warrior who made the ultimate sacrifice. A time when his friends and family can see him honored and reflect upon their loss, that sacrifice, and a legion of virtues respresented in both a...
