Looking for something to do on Monday night? Look no further! From our friends in the UTEP Music Department: On Monday, November 10, the UTEP Percussion Ensemble and the Pandemonium Steel Drum Orchestra will perform in concert. The program will feature contemporary percussion chamber compositions, while Pandemonium will present entertaining calypso music. Both ensembles are under the direction of Professor Larry White. Coronado's quest to break into finals at the Texas State Marching Band Contest is over. The T-birds finished in 30th place out of 37 groups today. The 5 judges scores ranked them between 26th and 32nd place, far out of contention. They did however, finish above the other two bands from our approximate geographic area, as Frenship High School, near Lubbock, finished in 36th place, and Central High School , from San Angelo finished 37th. Here are results from the plethora of contest happenings yesterday! Coronado advanced from the 6-A local Area Marching Contest. No other ratings were awarded at this contest; they picked the advancing band only. At the NMSU Tournament of Bands, here are the finals scores and rankings: 1. Hanks (89.688 points) 2. The local Area contest for advancement to the Texas State Marching Band Contest will be October 25 at the SAC. Due to conflicts with the EPISD scheduling football games for several 6-A bands that day, the contest will not start until 4 p.m. The performance order should be as follows: Eastwood- 4:00 Americas-4:15 Franklin -4:30 Socorro-4:45 El Dorado-5:00 Coronado-5:15 Montwood-5:30 Announcement of advancing band at approximately 6:00; only 1 band will advance. The UIL Regional marching contest is Saturday, October 11 at the Socorro Athletic Complex. There is an admission charge, usually around $5. I got an email the other day in which the writer had much to say about how the taxpayer and school districts were spending tens of thousands of dollars on halftime shows, thus rendering the band director basically useless. The writer thought the taxpayers were being ripped off-- all that money on a single halftime. So let's talk a little about how bands get their shows. As usual, things are humming along on th school music scene. Tonight is the best night for college halftimes in our area, as you can see the UTEP Marching Miners and the NMSU Aggie Band in the Sun Bowl this evening. High school shows are coming together, and the audition processes in all areas --band, choir, and orchestra, are underway. It will be a busy and somewhat unusual contest season, with a few competing events sure to have and effect on some contests. UIL music contests are finally finished for the year, but there are still many musical events ahead of us. Competitively, many area students will be traveling to the Austin area for the Texas State solo and ensemble contest held on May 24 and 26. Students who received a first division on a class 1 memorized solo or a class 1ensemble in band, choir, orchestra, and piano events at the local UIL contest are eligible to compete at this prestigious event. More music contests are filling the calendar the next week. The 3-day Del Valle concert band contest started yesterday and will continue today and tomorrow. The contest is being held at the Ysleta School District theater, located in the Ysleta central office at 9600 Sims. This contest is a concert and sight-reading contest, so bands will perform their three concert selections on stage for a panel of three adjudicators, and then adjourn to a separate room to sight-read a selection of music for a second panel of judges. The next three months will see a flurry of school music events as area music groups of all types go through their spring contest seasons. This weekend is offering up four contests for the music fan. The West Texas Colorguard Association is presenting two more guard contests tis weekend.
