I ended up getting my tumblers at "fake" SBUX locations (one at a college, another at a Target in a less populated area in another state while I was on the road). All of the local corporate stores sold out practically before the sun was up.
Unfortunately, it's now been two days of Italian Roast. In the old days, it was never permissible to brew ITA or FRE for COD. NEVER! The idea that we now have whole weeks of this (or else suffer with Pike) makes the free tumbler fills come at a challenging price. The idea that they're using less expensive beans doesn't surprise me at all. That's the whole premise behind forcing 2% milk on customers and pretending it's for health rather than financial reasons. Once the tumbler promo is done, I think I may let my gold Rewards membership lapse. SBUX just isn't much fun anymore.
Thanks, Starbucks! I'll be drinking free brewed coffee in January in my 16 oz tumbler
My neighborhood Starbucks -- a fairly large store -- had only 6 of today's "12 Days of Gifting" special: the $19.95 tumbler that can be used for free coffee all of January. (I was up early, and got the store's first tumbler. The six were still in boxes.) How many did your store get? How fast di...
Thanks for sharing this, Dave! I was very fortunate to happen upon this sighting, which was just long enough for me to snap one quick mobile photo before the butterfly went traveling down WePo.
Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly
Carl Black took this great photo of a male Tiger Swallowtail butterfly (used by permission): It's rather easy to see why it has "tiger" in its name, given the wing markers which resemble tiger stripes. See more photos of this beautiful butterfly (male and female) at this Flickr cluster. Isn't...
I definitely prefer the green. Interestingly, many retailers switched to green (or other dark colors) during the 90s, as it was seen as creating more of a premium shopping experience. Darker colors also make the products stand out more, rather than the shelving. I guess this shelving remains from when this was a Baby Teeter, though.
New shelving in the Baby Kroger
Some of the old green shelving has been replaced by new beige shelving. The trucks are still in the lot, so more aisles will probably be changed out tonight. Will this change encourage you to shop here more often? I doubt many even noticed it. Apparently somebody at corporate thinks it's ...
Thanks again, Dave! Great seeing you last night.
Two ways you can help Carl celebrate his birthday
Carl Black, who seems to know everything about Decatur, first, is turning 39 tomorrow. There are two ways you can make his "Jack Benny" birthday special: First, he asks that you donate $10, or whatever you can afford, to his cause, Our House: Secondly, he'd appreciate your vote for his Hipsta...
Wonderful photo, Dave! Very appropriate. Thank you.
Angel wings over Decatur on Sunday 5/2/2010
Brittany Cunningham, the 19-year-old sister of Decatur City Commissioner Kecia Cunningham, was laid to rest in the Decatur Cemetary Sunday, not long before this photo was snapped. [Incidentally, I took several shots of this formation, to get just the right effect, with the sun behind the mid...
There's also a Facebook Group for this: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=372770857545.
Boycott companies who advertise in the AJC Reach
Copies of the AJC Reach are cluttering our sidewalks. Our best way to stop it is to blacklist any merchant which advertises in it, to the extent we can. We should also boycott those who place ads on our mailboxes. A CBS Atlanta (Ch 46) video report says Pet Supermarket has already pulled its...

The tail has been TAGged on the donkey for the Taste of Decatur ripoff
Will Mockridge, the boyfriend of the editor of Flash-Fox, got a rambling reply from Ellis Stanley of Tag.Mag [sorry, haven't found a photo yet], who also is the registrant for the Taste of Decatur website [as Maigh found out]: Will Mockridge, We apologize for your displeasure. We also apolog...
I'm still not entirely sure why they would've told anyone the event was cancelled, since it was not planned as an outdoor function. (The LS page improperly promoted that concept, but the ToD site did not). Where did LS get the info? Well, you'd think it was from the ToD promoters. Surely they did not make it up. Yet why would they hold an event just to get people to "sign up" for a card that would arrive via US Mail? Why not actually have cards to give away? Will we ever know the story?
Taste of Decatur was a FUBAR from the launch to the letdown
The first time most of us heard of "Taste of Decatur" was Thursday morning, when LivingSocial.com offered the tickets at half price ($5). There was virtually no advance marketing. The local blogs would have been happy to promote it had they been notified. The name of the event steals the byline ...
Just to clarify, this is tomorrow (the 9th). Wish it were tonight, as there are about three dozen things happening simultaneously tomorrow. Thanks much for the reminder!
Bradley Observatory open house Friday 4/9/2010
The Bradley Observatory open house is a great opportunity for those interested in astronomy. The parking lot at the Observatory is very small, and ASC asks it be reserved for the handicapped and elderly. Others can park in one of the lots along S. McDonough and pleasantly walk to the observato...
You may wish to retitle this as CFA IN NDM closed. I'm sure the triple drive-thru at the mall is still going strong (lots more traffic outside than in).
Chick-Fil-A in North DeKalb Mall closed
I don't get to the North DeKalb Mall all that often, so I don't know how long the Chick-Fil-A inside has been closed. [Just so there's no confusion, Carl notes the Chick-Fil-A nearby on North Druid Hills still does a brisk drive-through business.] Quite a few other store fronts are also cl...
Decatur Girl, You may wish to consider meeting folks before you issue judgement. Caroline sent an email to personal friends and never intended this to become "her" issue or to be associated with it. She did not know the booting ordinance was up for consideration and passed until I told her. She wasn't even sure how the media got her contact info this week.
Caroline Herring sees booting ordinance changes as step in right direction
See the video at 11 Alive News. This week the Decatur city commission decided to ease up on motorists a bit, requiring private lots to make warning signs on lots more visible and easier to understand. And it's requiring private unstaffed lots to use machines that will actually gives customer...
Apparently the advertising failed completely for me. I passed this casino twice last week and know folks that have just been there, but the name never registered. Last night I could never read the name (just the Creek portion). Now I know, though I'm still not clear why they were hovering over neighborhoods southeast of Decatur.
Blimp over Decatur
Perhaps you saw a blimp (or airship) over Decatur Saturday night, 12/5/09 (the night of the SEC Championship at the Dome) or Sunday afternoon. Click on the image at right to see an enlarged image taken at 10X zoom. If you didn't get a close look at it, this short video (with clips and stills fr...
Love it! Great seeing you last night.
Pete the Cat plans to steal the T from the GT admin building
A longstanding tradition at Georgia Tech is the stealing of a T off the Georgia Tech administration building. Public service announcement: Don't try it. You can get hurt and/or in a lot of trouble. Last evening at the Seen Gallery, James Dean graciously agreed to customize his painting of thi...
Just what I love...cookies that not only look but sound and feel delicious. Here's to the ginger chewie virus reaching all of us! :)
how sweet of you
I'm not going to mince words here: this is one of the best cookies I've ever eaten. My friend Jen, whom you just met through her soup recipe post, brought these to the Eat on $30 Challenge wrap party. They sat on a plate pretty innocent like. People plowed through all of the savory apps and...
Oh, these sound pretty darn amazing. Thanks for posting the creation!
bar none
In the "I rarely have a sweet tooth" weirdness that is my gastronomic cravings, there is a sub-topic that makes people really clutch their pearls: I don't really like cheesecake. I feel like I should like it because it's the decadent cousin to all the sweets I do like: creamy mousses, panna co...
Glad you were able to cover the event, and I'm certainly very surprised that it was not a full crowd. I would've been there were it not for a monthly board meeting.
Judy Shepard at Agnes Scott
After Bill from the Georgia Center for the Book announced future events and eloquently introduced her; Judy Shepard spoke, answered questions, and signed her book at Agnes Scott College last evening. The crowd was a bit disappointing. The threat of rain might have been part of the reason. She ma...
Actually I sent the link to the newsletter, along with information about the open house, happening 10.22 at 6:30pm. I'll share a public link to that if they create one in the future.
Georgia Sierra Club moving to East Decatur Station
Carl tweeted about this yesterday and Decatur Metro dug a bit to find this in the Sierran, the newsletter of the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club.. There's actually plenty of parking, if not in the EDS lot, in the MARTA lot about 2 blocks to the east.
Might I get a BlogZILLA shirt? I didn't know they existed!
Unofficial summary of City Commission meeting
Last night's City Commission meeting will be summarized at the City's website in a day or two. Here's an unofficial summary. One line summary: All items on the agenda were approved without modification. Attendance was very light. Two gentlemen from GSU were in attendance, but made no comment. P...
