Here is a great video of Penny Simkin talking about how singing to a baby in utero and right after birth can facilitate bonding and be easily used to soothe the just born baby. In the video, two examples are shown: one with a dad singing to the baby, and the other one with a 2 year-old big sister - it's moving! I am thrilled to discover that my favorite website for wraps and baby carrying videos, which is french, is now available in english! They are the best videos I can find: very detailed, make the wrapping looks so much easier, and they are fun to watch. I like the music and the website spirit. With the last family I just finished to worked with, the dad was doing most of the baby carrying during the first few weeks. He was calming down a fussy baby or allowing mom to take a very improbable nap otherwise. I love to see new... Continue reading

I have been wondering about this since I started to work with babies here, in the US. I have thought about many factors, and I may go into details about them later on. But today, while talking with a few moms at my midwife mom's group about sleep, I felt strongly about one factor: breastfeeding, and especially extended breastfeeding (beyond 6 months). There is a very large number of moms breastfeeding in San Francisco, initiating breastfeeding but also continuing until 6 months, 1 year or even later.
