Jimmy Norman, after a long illness, died on Nov. 8 in New York City. When he left the Coasters after 30 years of performing, Jimmy was in poor health for over a decade. However, during this period, he recorded Little Pieces in 2004 and The Way I See It earlier this year. Those two records, produced by Kerryn Tolhurst, were among Jimmy’s best work. In addition to be a prolific performer, a great storyteller and a master musician, Jimmy was an old school songwriter from Nashville. He combined the best of soul and R&B, along with country and blues, and... Continue reading

Jimmy had been ill recently and it was really good to see him out and performing again. He was backed by an all-star band, led by Jonny Rosch, and featuring Lou Reed, Jeff Golub and Andy Hess. I'm pleased to say that the latest Jimi Hendrix anthology, West Coast Seattle Boy, from Legacy Recordings, features a track I that recorded with the great guitarist in the mid 60s. It’s called That Little Old Groove Maker. West Coast Seattle Boy is a new four-CD box set that is a must for any serious Jimi Hendrix fan. Hendrix’s days on the “Chitlin’ Circuit” are represented here, featuring tracks from stints with the Isley Brothers, songwriter Don Covay (on his original recording of “Mercy Mercy”), and Little Richard, whom Hendrix hooked up with after a brief tenure playing the R&B... It was "A Great Night in Harlem," the annual benefit for The Jazz Foundation of America at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. The show raised $1.7 million to help musicians throughout the nation. Part of the show was Jimmy Norman's video, produced with Marc Roth, which was popular with the audience. Continue reading

All good things must end. After 183 Saturday night performances at New York City’s Roth’s Steakhouse, Jimmy Norman, Sean Harkness and his group of musicians played their final show on a rainy, windy night on March 13, 2010. The Roth’s gig started on Sept. 9, 2006 and was a good run. Marc Roth, who is on the board of directors of the Jazz Foundation, is changing the name and menu for his restaurant over the next few months. Over the years, Jimmy and Sean’s Trio have played two sets of jazz, R&B and original songs each week. Sean plays guitar,... Continue reading

Jimmy Norman was the guest at this week’s ProShop, sponsored by the Songwriter’s Guild of America. The ProShop, which has drawn a who’s who of music industry veterans as guests, is hosted by music industry veteran Ann Ruckert. Ruckert quizzed Jimmy about The Way I See It, his new CD of original songs scheduled for release by Judy Collin’s Wildflower records in February. After the Q/A, the group of aspiring songwriters listened as Jimmy sang and played piano. Continue reading

On Sunday, October 18, I was privileged to appear with an all-star cast at the Jazz Foundation’s 18th annual Loft Party in New York City. It was a crowded space at Hudson Studios, with three simultaneous rooms of music running for almost five hours. I presented Jazz Foundation executive director Wendy Oxenhorn with a finished CD of the multi-artist project, My Foundation, a new song about the Jazz Foundation and the wonderful work that it does. I was honored to be able to sing with a handful of others on this CD. --- --- Then I sang Misty, accompanied on... Continue reading

Mix Magazine By David Weiss Sept. 1, 2005 They say there are a million stories in the Naked City. Come to think of it, there have probably been a million albums made in the Naked City (New York City, for our purposes), but none with such an unlikely genesis as Jimmy Norman's "Little Pieces." A gorgeously soulful CD by a lifelong songwriter with amazing credits but little recognition, its recording is the tale of how a dedicated team of New York City engineers and musicians helped rescue a precious set of songs from the trash bin — literally — and... Backed by a stellar cast of musicians, Jimmy Norman sang Time Is On My Side at the inaugural concert of Jonny Rosch and Friends at the newly opened P&G Bar on Manhattan’s Upper West Side last Tuesday (Sept. 15). Rosch called Norman from the audience to sing the classic song that he co-wrote in 1964 at a recording session for then 23-year-old singer Irma Thomas. Thomas's arranger, H.B. Barnum, hired Norman to write additional lyrics to the original Jerry Ragovoy version of the song. Backing Norman was Tony Garnier, longtime bassist for Bob Dylan; Jon Herington, lead guitar player for... Continue reading
