Making the most of AutoCAD when using Revit One of the most common things that engineers and architects do not understand is that their existing standard AutoCAD details can be used in a Revit Architecture, Revit Structure and Revit MEP project. Additionally, those that do try and use them often explode them to try and make them appear visually consistent with their Revit Details and in doing do create additional model complexities for themselves down the road. General guidelines for using DWG data in any Revit project Link Instead of Import Wherever Possible There are many reasons for this school... Continue reading

From an AutoCAD Architecture Class I was teaching a question came up on how to show existing plans, demolition and new plans. In AutoCAD Architecture 2011 you can speed design and production of renovation projects with tools that enable you to graphically represent design changes to existing buildings as “existing, new, and demolished.” These tools help reduce the effort around coordinating the creation of renovation drawing views, enabling you to more quickly switch between existing, demolition, and revision plans because the design data is contained in one master drawing. Creating a renovation plan: 1. Open ACA2011_Renovation.dwg 2. Go to the... Continue reading

When you create a project in Revit Architecture, Revit Structure and Revit MEP, specify the project location on the globe using the nearest major city or the latitude and longitude. This project-wide setting is useful for generating location-specific shadows for views that use them, such as solar studies, walkthroughs, and rendered images. You can also rotate a view to reflect True North (instead of Project North, which is the top of the view). This procedure ensures that natural light falls on the correct side of the building model to produce realistic shadows for solar studies, walkthroughs, and rendered images. True... Continue reading

In Autodesk Revit Architecture, Revit Structure and Revit MEP you control visibility and graphic display of elements using Filters. In any database system, a filter can be used to find a subset of a larger collection of items based on some criteria that the desired items (in the subset) share in common. For example, selecting all Doors in a model would give you every Door on all floors of all sizes. If however, you were interested in only the 3'-0" wide Doors, or just the Doors on the third floor, or even only the 3'-0" wide Doors that were also... Continue reading

In Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 and Autodesk Revit Structure 2010 you have a choice of Architectual Columns and Structural Columns. What is the difference between them? Architectural Columns: You can use architectural columns to model column box-outs around structural columns and for decorative applications. Architectural columns inherit the material of other elements to which they are joined. Compound layers in walls wrap at architectural columns. This does not apply to structural columns. Structural Columns: Structural columns are used to model vertical load-bearing elements in a building. Although structural columns share many of the same properties as architectural columns, structural columns... Continue reading

Autodesk Quantity Takeoff Understanding Quantity Takeoff (QTO) Concepts and Tools The process of measuring quantities of materials from drawings and specifications prepared by architects, engineers, and other designers is known as quantity takeoff. Traditionally, construction cost estimators have used paper-based methods to perform quantity takeoff. QTO gives estimators the tools to perform digital quantity takeoff, which is faster, easier, and more accurate than paper-based methods. Using QTO, estimators can combine multiple sources of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) design data and generate quantity takeoff to create a cost estimate. Both DWF and non-DWF files (DWGs, PDFs, TIFs, GIFs, and JPGs)... Continue reading

I consistently get question on Revit Platform Hardware Requirements and Revit Platform Model Optimization and Best Practices. The Revit platform's performance can depend as much on the knowledge, skill, and practices of its users as on the hardware environment provided for the software. To address both of these areas, the Revit platform team has assembled this collection of hardware requirements, recommendations, and modeling best practices as researched by both internal development and our community of dedicated customers. Just as no two buildings are identical, no two building models are identical in the tactics and strategies that will yield the most... Continue reading

Continuing on my travels from from my last blog "Inspired to use Revit Structure 2010 Bridge Extension", after crossing the historic Hoover Dam, we drove onward to the west side of the Grand Canyon to see the "Grand Canyon Skywalk". To get to the Skywalk we had to travel down Diamond Bar Road whick is currently being improved. We traveled 14 miles of non-paved, graded, dusty, but passable road. This is well worth it to see this architectural marvel. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a one-of-a-kind glass bottom, cantilever bridge, and resting 4,000 feet above the Colorado River. This impressive engineering... Continue reading
