oh goodness, Jayne, I've missed you like crazy! So glad you are back xx
One Year and Eight Months Later
I have a corned beef in the oven, rubbed mostly all over with black pepper, coriander, and paprika. It's perched on a rack over a 13 x 9 inch pan of water and will, in around 3-4 hours, be magically transformed into pastrami. I wasn't planning on giving it a smoky flavor, but the drippings fr...
Do you take these down during the day or fold them back? Or do they just stay up for warmth all winter as Alex and Julia aren't in their rooms as much?
The First Two Window Quilts
I finished them! Yesterday, which was Thanksgiving, was also my only day off this week. As I mentioned in my previous post, we did a brunch instead of the traditional turkey dinner, which was wonderful and relaxing and left us with a whole afternoon and evening to do whatever we felt like do...
I am waiting for the lastest news on the Big Cheeeeeeese .. is the mould coming along nicely? When will they be ready for the big cutting-into ceremony?
Eau de Camembert
Not only is there mold migrating across the rinds…there is aroma! I took this picture earlier today and then I took a healthy sniff of the air inside my little cheese cave…and it smelled like Camembert! I was screechingly happy. Yes. Screechingly.
I reckon it was that Softy, playing innocent now but back then......
Cats playing doctors and nurses. Ha!
Taking Matters into His Own Paws
I was working the latter half of a double when Bill texted me to say that Scratchy’s tube was out. Feeding tube…out. No one took it out, mind you. At least, none of us humans. We were all at work or at school, so somehow…the tube came out. It had been stitched in place where it went in...
well it works for cleaning the loo, so I guess it must be the same principle for the inside of the tube!! LOL
Scratchy Update and Other Catching Up Stuff
Look at that face. Granted, it’s not a good picture – lighting is bad because of where he was when I took it a few minutes ago, but I didn’t want to force him out just to take a better-lit image. Anyway. The feeding tube. You can see the end of the tube in the picture above. The blue thi...
a hint for you from a friend of mine whose cat also had a feeding tube with fatty liver syndrome, if the tube gets blocked, the vet told her to use a little coke to free it up. Cleans the tube better than anything else apparently.

Sneakers
Like ‘em? They’re Alex’s. On my feet. There’s something terribly wrong with that.
Great pictures, Alex! Love the one where Julia is making an O with her mouth! and the one third from the end, so elegantly posed! Fabulous.
And isn't Julia becoming beautiful. You must burst with pride at these two..
Sports Photographer
Julia’s gymnastics end of the year demonstration was the other night. Of course there are pictures. We arrived a little early for a change and managed to get better seats than we usually do. The demo is held in the same facility where the kids have their gymnastics and dance classes, so th...
you keep saying your little boy... you have to get used to the fact he is your FLIPPING BIG BLOKE of a boy now...
Hurler
My little boy on the mound at a recent game. Alex is home sick today, so I figured I’d write about him…. As you may know, if you’re family, friend or a long-term reader of this website, Alex loves baseball. He’s been playing Little League ball – T-ball, rookie, and now Minors – since he was ...
Every few days? wow you are a clean and tidy person, mine only get done every few weeks! Feel proud of yourself!
Self Portrait With Spotty Window
I wasn’t going to post this. Then I thought maybe I’d wash the window and reshoot and post that. But nah. This is real life. I only clean the windows above my sink every few days. I’m sure you’ll understand.
and I wish you all you wish yourself Jayne. And with that a sincere thank you for the joy and laughter that you have given me this past year.
So thank you, and may we all have more joy in 2012
xx
End of the Year Thoughts
Because, of course, this is a time for looking back and for looking forward. I’m often better at looking back…and beating myself up for things I didn’t do, or didn’t do enough. I’m really good at that. And then I look forward and I do one of two things. Either I give myself too many things to ...
ooh I think I would like a gap like that to be able to poke my tongue at people through my teeth....
As The Gap Widens
About two weeks ago, she looked like this. Well, not every day. But if you look at her mouth, you can see one of her front teeth is slightly askew. We waited. And then she looked like this. And she was very happy. But the story was far from over. The other front tooth was also very wigg...
isn't she pretty :)
When a Bee Lies Sleeping…
…in the blossoms of your hydrangea…. We were walking around the yard this morning, inspecting the fields, so to speak, and I saw this pollen-laden bumble bee. She (she? he?) was just resting there. Not dead – I saw a leg move. I’m guessing she was still a bit damp from the overnight dew. ...
Flipping heck! that is some Animal Magic cake!
Herbivores of the African Plains – Julia’s Cake 2011
Originally Julia said she wanted a giraffe cake. Because I’d done elephants before. And Beluga whales last year. The plan was to have a bunch of fondant giraffes all over a grassy cake. But then, as is her womanly right, Julia changed her mind. She finally settled on giraffes, hippos, zeb...
worry not! I haven't posted on my blog for a month!!! sigh.. just no time..
Too Long to Post and Too Little Time
Sorry about the silence on here recently (well, today and yesterday, although since I’m writing right now, I guess I’m not being silent…) but I’ve got a lot of stuff going on this week and not enough time to post as I’d like to. Tomorrow should be better…
it's a good thing to just be here to listen isn't it? Sometimes more words just don't say it right, but it is so right to tell someone that you were here, you listened, you care...

My Mother Isn’t Perfect
No, there’s no “but she’s perfect to me” follow up to that statement. It says what I want it to say. Hallmark might disagree. My mother isn’t perfect. For a long time, I thought she was. Or, rather, I thought I was supposed to be. When I was a kid, my mother seemed perfect. She did all the ...
A dear friend of mine put an "I hear you" button on her blog for times like this. When there is nothing to say other than I hear you and I love you even if I don't really know you.
I hear you. Tick.

well I think they are talking about Julia...
LOL she is a lovely little testy snake..
Testy Snakes
Spammed comments are annoying, because I have to go and delete them and then ban the IP address, which takes time…it’s kind of like weeding the garden, only less meditative. And it doesn’t smell as good. But sometimes I just have to laugh. A lot of the spammy comments I get are from people some...
LOL now you really should be making lovely seaweedy strands with nori & chives and arranging your little fishes ...
Smoked Trout Ravioli
My new favorite use for leftover smoked trout! In past years, when we’ve had extra smoked trout, one of the things I like to do is make trout hash. I’ve also made mushrooms stuffed with chevre and smoked trout…and salmon cakes which could just as easily have been trout cakes, because both var...

Pink Bread! More Fun with Beets!
Okay, not completely pink. I used a blend of all-purpose and whole wheat flour, and I believe the whole wheat contributed to the browner color. The bread came out very moist and soft, though. And, thanks to beets, it’s a better-than-before source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Magnesium and P...
Green bread? well that's pretty easy with spinach isn't it?
Yep, it’s Bread Dough
Bill told the kids I’d butchered a large, purple dinosaur and included a puree of it in the dough. He thinks he’s funny. The kids do, too. But, of course, they don’t necessarily believe it when he says things like that. And besides, the kids already knew what I’d used. It was beets. (Good...
oh but you could have sorted them out with a few cushions made from the feathers... LOL
Poultry Patrol
It’s a turkey. This morning after the kids ate breakfast, I was in the kitchen washing a small part at the base of the mountain of dishes I have to do today. MOUNTAIN. Why I’m emphasizing my dishwashing laziness I have no idea, but there you go. Anyway, I’m washing and sort of zoning out to t...
I'm surprised you didn't track it down with dinner in mind!!!

Parsnips are good too, like carrots and beetroots, nice and sweet - have you ever tried them?
