he said UF and FSU run a similar scheme with South Florida talent and are elite defenses. lol
Posted by: UMike | January 06, 2014 at 10:06 AM
Two years ago FSU went 9-4 and lost to Virginia and Wake Forest. Winston made FSU a winner- not the defense. Florida was 106th in pass defense and 87th against the run.
In addition, if he thinks Easley or Joyner or half of the defensive players on FSU or UF could qualify for Miami, Pete Garcia is as dumb as I thought when he fired Cristobal.
Golden Commits To Hurricanes
I hate to say that I told you so, but as it turns out, I most definitely told U so. Miami Hurricanes head football coach Al Golden released a statement Sunday, reaffirming his commitment to the University of Miami: "There has been much speculation concerning my future at the University of Miami...
It's not BS...what he was saying this morning is exactly what he has been saying for three years.
While a person can disagree and think he and his plan are full of crap, he's not lying. He believes in a process and he will not change.
I understand folks who disagree and think that his process is flawed, but don't ever think for a minute that he doesn't believe in it.
This guy is as transparent as can be...and has been since day one. The "process" trumps everything.
As far as coaches go, he could fire Dinofrio and dump what they have been teaching for the last three years...ask Mack Brown what firing Manny Diaz did for him.
Golden has a plan and you may not like the plan...and I certainly don't like parts of it...but until he is no longer at the "U", the plan will continue. That's about as honest as a coach can be.

Just glad we finally have a coach somebody else wants (Twice).
Go back a year- almost exactly- and the same thing was happening with the Wisconsin job.
“Al Golden, a favorite of Barry Alvarez, has emerged heavily at Wisconsin. Source says Golden mulling a decision today."Pete Thamel- SI.com 12/15/2012
In business there is always one cardinal rule- you always listen if someone comes calling.
Had Al said from the beginning that he was not interested in the PSU job, the same people busting his chops now would be upset that he wasn't.
You don't like him as the Miami coach, I get that...just don't use the fact that he talked to PSU as a reason...you would have attacked him either way.

Bobby Layne and Doak Walker played on the same high school team at Dallas Highland Park. The last years of his life Bobby lived down the street from my folks in Lubbock. My dad still angry Bobby went to Texas instead of SMU with Doak.
My condolences on your loss, VA Cane.

24-15 in his first 3 seasons @ Vandy in the sec. Now thats progress!Posted by: 4-Real | January 05, 2014 at 02:16 PM
They beat Austin Peay, UMASS, Florida (not the UF we played), Wake Forest, Tennessee, Kentucky, UAB and Houston in the bowl game.
They also beat a good, not great Georgia team.It was Vandy's first win over a Top 25 team since 2008. Not exactly a sterling record...even for Vandy.

A few thoughts that ran through my head this morning, just my opinion.
Franklin is the designated Rooney Rule interview for this year (all kinds of interviews-doesn't get hired anywhere). See: Charlie Strong for the last four years.
PSU got north of 6 million from the Texans for the O'Brien buyout. They can afford anyone.
Louisville may be a better job opening than Miami if Al leaves.
Chud stays in the NFL as an assistant.
Donna ain't going anywhere near Butch.
Al is too good a press guy to let all this commotion happen without an offer from PSU and close to a deal.

"What about the TTU coach?"
As an alum of TTU, ain't no way KK is going anywhere for a while. Having too much fun at his alma mater and after the fiasco with Leach firing and the Tuberville mess, Tech admin would do anything to keep him there.
If Al gets a chance to go home and takes it, I don't fault him a bit. I will say that with the addition of Louisville and the improvement at Duke, the ACC is a much tougher test for Miami going forward ( I would rank us fifth next year).
In addition, if he goes to PSU he gets to keep Dinofrio employed for another three or four years.
Miami will probably be picked third (based on this year- correctly) in the Coastal next year behind Duke and UNC. Al can be third in a Big 10 Division at PSU or third in an ACC Division.
What it comes down to is how much the fact that Donna and Hocutt didn't tell him about the investigation during his interview still grates on him.

I would think that Cristobal would be the forst person called if Al leaves. After 8 sacks last night, he might be available.

From Mike Bakas@Scout.com
"The one thing I've noticed about this team, especially in this game, is how little excitement they seem to show on the football field -- especially on defense. It almost seems like the mentality is just don't make mistakes. I heard Mark D'Onofio before the game talk about how his defense wore down against FSU in the second half. He said a lot of it was because they were using the same regular guys in the second half of that game because "some younger guys made some mistakes early on in that game" and basically were removed from the rotation because of it. That's bothersome. Say what you want about Mark D'Onofrio and his schemes. Say what you want about the players in it. The thing that probably worries me most is it looks like his entire defensive unit is playing and just trying not to make mistakes. Maybe that's the new brand of Miami football -- it's just frustrating because we're seeing the product of what's being put on the field."

As a side note, I don't think it's always "one player not filling his gap or freelancing". I think we have some guys on defense who know that they are getting their butts handed to them even when they do everything right because the scheme is wrong...and they're tired of it.
"Trusting the process" is successful only if "the process" works.

How do U watch film of games for 9 weeks and NOT have some of this stuff corrected? I can understand if ONE player blows a coverage on ONE play, but when it looks like all 11 players have no idea where to be on EVERY play then that's an issue. IJS

Soup,
What I was referring to is that despite what some on here say, we are stuck with this scheme on defense. Unlike Dallas last night where they have a good scheme but no players, we have players but a bad scheme. You can't just wave a wand and suddenly change your defense scheme like you can with offensive play calling.
How bad is it? Golden said in his presser yesterday that he was glad that Kacy Rodgers would be back this week to get them lined up correctly...what kind of admission is that 9 weeks into the season? Kacy Rodgers, for Pete's Sake!!!!!!!!

After the game, my major concern was/is that Miami's problem is the entire defense.
If it was Morris, as I had thought after Wake and UNC, then you can fix a player. In the VT game, Morris was 16 for 29 for 324 yards and 2 TD's...no TO's (with some drops).
How do you replace/change an entire defense? They have coached this scheme for almost three years now and we are stuck. Much worse than I thought...months of coaching needed to fix an entire unit.

CGNC- Boone threw four interceptions, also. He was 7 for 26 for 91 yards passing and threw 4 INTs...and Duke still won.

What bothers me the most about the two kick turnovers early is that VT didn't get the ball on our 20 yard line...both TO's were on the other side of the 50. First quarter, not tired, and our defense could not even hold them to a field goal.
Duke beat VT without completing a pass in the entire second half and overcame four turnovers...not good for us.

I can just see this thread if Miami put 8 6'6" 270-290 pound white guys on the line of scrimmage like Stanford and ran the lead power from the I formation 40 times a game. I guess we could move to the Big 10.

When I watch players like Easley and Clowney and Jernigan...they are an entirely different species of football player. Just don't know if UM wants that attitude in its locker room or on the field anymore. Used to. Just a thought.
