100mb broadband!!!
The average broadband speed across the UK is 6.2Mbit, where as the average advertised speed is 13.8Mbit, so most people are getting less than half the speed they are paying for. However, in some other European countries the average speed people are getting is over 16Mbits; in Germany and in Holland they are getting over 23Mbits. Luckily Virgin Media have been rolling out 100Mbit around the UK since October 2010 with an expected completion of around the middle of 2012, so if you can get the 100Mbit service you can help bring up the average UK internet speed, especially with... More than 2 Billion people use the internet
As of 31st of March 2011 the amount of people using the internet passed the 2 billion mark (2,095,006,005 to be exact) or about 30.2% of the world population. Asia makes up 922 million with Europe the next closest at 476 million and North America at 272 million. North America may only have 272 million internet users but that is 78.3% of the population of North America, which is by far the highest percentage of total population. So when you are on the internet and it suddenly slows down, check what time it is in North America or Asia, because... Continue reading

Contact-less payments
Orange and Barclaycard have just announced a joint venture whereby you can use your Orange phone to purchase items up to a maximum of £15 per transaction just by waving your phone over a special device at the till. However, there is only 1 phone you can use at the moment and that has only just come out. Hopefully there will be some Android phones and here's hoping the next iPhone will have the NFC contact less technology in. So if you are lucky enough to have one of the Samsung Tocco Quick Taps then you can use it in... Continue reading

More and more things using Wi-Fi
You expect the latest laptops, phones and a few desktop PCs to have Wi-Fi, but manufacturers are starting to make more and more devices with Wi-Fi built-in to make our lives easier. Things like printers and scanners being Wi-Fi make it easier to all use the same printer on different PCs or Apple Macs. HP are launching a mouse in the next month or two that uses Wi-Fi to connect, instead of using a Bluetooth dongle to take up precious USB ports on a laptop, plus it should work upto 30 feet from the computer so should be good for... PC PAL Does The Gadget Show Live 2011
This year at The Gadget Show Live there were a lot of companies showing off their latest 3D products, almost all of which required you to wear glasses; only the Nintendo 3DS didn't. Wouldn't have minded seeing some 3D TVs that dont need you to wear rechargable glasses. The other area that seemed to get some attention was mind controlled software to do various things, which seems to be just the begining in this area! While walking round the Hall of Fame there were quite a few things I remember playing/using as a kid, me and a friend at school... Continue reading

Old Lady Kills the Internet
How do you bring the internet down for thousands of people? You might think you would need to hire some top job hacker but you would be wrong… All you need is to get an older lady and give her a spade and she will sort it out for you. Yes, that’s what has happened in the US, as an elderly woman in Georgia is facing a prison sentence after reportedly causing internet services in neighbouring Armenia to crash. The old lady was scavenging for copper when she found a fibre optic cable and damaged it. Lucky for now she... Continue reading

Getting in-app purchases under control (Parents take note!)
Those free apps your kids download on the iPod/iPhone/iPad sometimes aren't so free, when they have extra items to make the game bigger and better, but that cost you money, charged through your iTunes account. Well Apple listened to the parents around the world who'd had rather large amounts of money charged to their credit/debit cards, and there are now restrictions to stop in-app purchases. First make sure you have iOS 4.3 or higher, to check go into Settings, General, About and check what Version is listed, if not 4.3 or higher update using iTunes. Then go to Settings, General... The War of the Browsers
IE9 Crowned Best Browser by Toms Hardware Internet Explorer is the world’s most popular browser, the one which comes with your computer and auto updates to the latest version. For this reason it’s still the browser of choice for most people. But for us computer savvy people we know there are alternatives to the famous IE. These alternatives are Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera, and unless you have been hiding under a rock the past 10 years you might recognise the names of some of these browsers. So you might ask yourself “which one should I use, and why would... Continue reading

Less SPAM, say thanks to Microsoft
Microsoft's digital crimes unit and US marshalls took down computers in a number of US states last Wednesday, that were controlling millions of computers that have been infected with Rustock malware. I have noticed a drop in spam I'm getting from 10-20 messages to only 1-2 over these last few days. Some reports say Rustock was sending out half the worlds spam, about 200 billion messages a day. Probably best to make sure your computer is not infected, update your anti-virus program and run a scan, if you haven't got any call your local PC PAL Engineer and we can... Continue reading

System Tool is around, please be careful....
System tool is the most recent attempt by hackers and scammers in trying to trick you out of your hard earned money. System Tool is what we call a Rogue Antivirus and its goal is to harvest your credit & debit cards details. The first thing a hacker will do is find a popular website, hack it and then places its own virus on there, internet users then mistakenly download this virus and get infected. The next stage is quite amusing because it then brings up a window warning the user that their computer is infected with all these viruses.... Continue reading
