Meet Lucy, the newest member to the Strauch household. She is a delight and has already earned herself some interesting nick names, like lighting, and the phantom (those are the polite names). She is so quick, you don’t see her coming and then there she is right in front of you. Poor Red Cat, she is really giving him a time. Lucy is 8 months old and Red Cat is almost 18 years old. He’s slowing down quite a bit but Lucy wants nothing slow. Once she got used to the little cat door we have in the basement, she... Continue reading

Twenty eleven. Sounds so si-fi doesn’t it. To all the younger folks this is just how it is. But to the older generation, of whom I am one, this is soooo si-fi sounding. Let’s go back in time, maybe 30, 35 years. Imagine... having to find a telephone booth to make a call. If the person isn’t home, oh well. Alright, alright I know you heard this before, but I remember the first copy machine. It was the size of an office desk and all it did was copy, 1 page at a time. We didn’t have to use carbon... A new visitor behind the Strauch's house Look who appeared on my back deck. I just happened to pass by the door and saw what I thought was an owl picking at sunflower seeds. He flew immediately to the nearest tree, was not an owl but was patient enough to wait until I got my camera and snapped a few. A new meaning to bird feeder? Well, that's life in the country. Joanne Strauch Continue reading

Just a quick post to share the beauty that is Joanne Strauch's locker hook rug project. Second large section done! You can see more photos of this rug project - from fleece to floor - on our Flickr page. We had a wonderful, and super-busy October full of lots of fiber shows and lots of orders for Strauch fiber equipment. Now we're gearing up for the holidays. How about you? Do you have any Strauch equipment on your holiday gift list? Continue reading

Thanks to everyone who entered our contest here and on our Facebook page! Our highly technical, yet random, method of selecting our winner involved strips of paper tossed on the floor at our Monday morning meeting. Gregory scooped up the name of the lucky winner... So, congratulations Amy Ring! We'll let Copper Moose know that you have a $25 credit toward the purchase of a Strauch Product. When you order your ball winder be sure to let them know that you're our lucky contest winner! Continue reading

October 4 - 10 is Spinning & Weaving Week, an international celebration of "the traditions and the future of our fiber arts and crafts." We reached a great milestone at Strauch Fiber this past week, thanks entirely to you - our loyal customers! Every drum carder we build gets a number, and is signed by Otto. This week we completed carder number 5000, a Strauch Finest Doublewide! The proud Strauch Team, from left to right: Otto, our fearless leader; Joanne, bean-counter extraordinaire and hostess with the mostest; Lawre, our Swift expert, and maker of various carder parts; Gregory, who puts the card cloth on the drums and has many "other duties as assigned"; Adam, our Production Manager and jack-of-all-trades; Liz, Ball Winder maven, maker... Now we are embarking on a new venture: E-D-U-C-A-T-I-O-N- Yes, we are now starting to produce educational videos to help fiber artists efficiently use our fiber processing tools. The first one we worked on---it's an experiment---is one covering the proper use of the Strauch Jumbo Ball Winder. Check it out on Youtube at: Let us know what you think, Otto Continue reading

It sounds like Otto & Joanne had a great time at the Australian Sheep & Wool Show! We've got some fun photos in our Flickr set, or you can sit back and enjoy the slide show right here. Our demo area was set up with our Australia dealer, Mandie, of Ewe Give Me the Knits! Otto and Joanne enjoyed meeting everyone and showing off our products. It looks like the Ravelry dinner was pretty fun too. I hope you enjoy looking at the pics. We can't wait for O & J to get home and tell us all the stories. Continue reading

While at the Fleece & Fibre Show in New Zealand, Joanne demonstrated how to take fiber off of the large drum of a carder as a roving rather than as a batt. Otto captured it in two short videos that we think you might enjoy. If you like, you can view them at our Flickr site. Or you can watch them right here! (The wonders of modern technology :-) Isn't that cool? The diz that Joanne is using is a large button. She keeps it pretty close to the card cloth, and is careful not to try to pull too... May has been a crazy-busy month here at Strauch Fiber. We've gone to four great fiber festivals, and we've introduced a new product. (More about the new addition in another post.) Maryland Sheep and Wool was a blast, or a blast furnace, depending on your point of view. Yup, it was hot, hot, hot! But as always, we had fun reconnecting with Strauch friends and fans from previous years and meeting lots of wonderful new people. Demos at Carolina Homespun, Earth Guild, Stony Mountain Fibers, Misty Mountain Farm, and The Mannings were well-received. It's great to get to spend a... Continue reading

Otto, Joanne, Lawre & Liz will each have a prize to give away on Saturday and on Sunday! We hope to see you there! If you have any questions about our... Continue reading

The new Strauch Fiber Equipment Company website has just been launched and we're so excited about it we want to give something away! The crafty ladies at Strauch Fiber, got together to make up this excellent and very cheerful prize package: Joanne Strauch created and printed a set of four note cards - three are her own block printed design, and one she hand stamped. Lawre (who some of you may know from her own business, Lawre's Laine) added a set of four hand-made Beaded Stitch Markers to the prize pack. And Liz, your blog hostess, contributed a 200 yd... Twenty three pounds of lasagna! Here's a picture of Joanne with her culinary masterpiece - the main part of our Easter feast at the Strauch's house. The usual cast of characters where there. Otto & Joanne (of course), Lawre, Adam and his family, friends Hugh & Rae Jean and Betty Lou, yours truly with my husband and mother-in-law. Everyone brought a dish to share, so we had quite the feast. There was a nice fresh veg and olive platter and Rae Jean's famous deviled eggs for starters; the main course, lasagna, along with sausage and chicken cooked in tomato gravy... Continue reading

On the weekend of March 19-21, Otto and Joanne kicked off our 2010 Wool Goes 'Round World (or should that be Whirled? or maybe Whorled?) Tour with a trip to Dahlonega, GA for the annual conference of the Southern States Llama Association. Otto and Joanne always have a great time with these folks. We had a booth set up so all the participants could check out our products. (Our carders work really well with both llama and alpaca!) Joanne took a workshop on weaving on a triangle loom. She had a great time and came back with a nice little... Continue reading
