I have set some ambitious goals for myself to complete in the remainder of September. Here's my list: 1. Make a binder for all my owner's manuals, as inspired by Benita Larsson. 2. Organize my "junk drawer" so that all the useful bits stashed in there can actually be found, and used. 3. Take down old shelves on living room wall and replace. 4. Organize the cabinet under the bathroom sink. 5. Organize the bottom cabinets in the kitchen. 6. Clean out the trunk of my car (gotta do this one before it gets cold!) 7. Clean all light fixtures.... I'm back from my unintended blog hiatus. It seems like I've gotten behind or dropped the ball on a lot the last month or so. Now it's time to get motivated and play catch-up! Continue reading

The birds who've nested on my balcony now have their babies! They must have hatched while I was at my mom's. I haven't been able to get a good look at them yet, so I don't know how many there are or anything. I tried to be discreet while hanging over them up on my stepladder with my camera, but that didn't really work out. So, I hurried it up and got back inside. I'll continue to spy on them through the blinds, though, and hopefully I'll get a better peek at the babies! You can see the baby tucked... Continue reading

Henry and Sam My mom called today to say she needs me to come and house-sit and take care of her dogs later this week for a few days. So, now I need to unpack from being there last weekend and get packed up again. I don't mind because it's very relaxing staying at her house, and it's nice being close to my grandmama. Alex will be very happy because he loves my mom's dogs. The only downside is that she lives in the middle of nowhere, so I'll have to find ways to entertain myself. I plan to do... Continue reading

Yesterday, I had to finish up a big project for school. Of course, I waited until the last possible second to get started, so I had to work like a crazy person to get it done. Therefore, Meatless Monday's dinner consisted of a big bowl of not-so-nutritious-but-majorly-delicious Frosted Mini-Wheats! Continue reading

Did I mention that I hate, with a burning fiery-hot passion all computer projects? Microsoft Access has completely beaten me down. I fought hard and long, but I am ready to send up the white flag. I even had my "Access for Dummies" book - and my trusty Google. But, in the end, I am still utterly defeated by a stupid database because I cannot figure out how to enter calculated totals for my invoices. Seriously - why couldn't I just draw it up on a piece of paper - I hate computers sometimes! Grrrrrr, technology!!! I shake my fist... Continue reading

Edenton, NC - 2009 First of all, bless whatever soul came up with 'Aleve Cold and Sinus' - it's been a lifesaver for me this past week! I came and spent this weekend with my grandma. My grandmama is hands down one of the funniest people I know. I love doing stuff with her. We always end up having a blast no matter what we do - and usually we're not doing anything other than running errands or going out for lunch, but she's one of those people that can make a trip to Walmart a riot. I really am... Continue reading

I have just recently discovered using a mirepoix when cooking beans. Where have I been?? It just totally toook things to a different level. Yes - that's right, folks. I have reached an all new level of beans - I know, it's wild and crazy around here! Well, back to the mirepoix. A mirepoix is really a very simple thing: it's carrots, celery, and onion used to add flavor and aroma to soups, stews, stocks, and beans, of course. A mirepoix is a fundamental flavor base in traditional french cuisine. And now it's going to be a fundamental in my... Continue reading

I missed Meatless Monday last week, due to an error in my meal-planning. Oops! But I was back in business this week! I had a beautiful salad filled with all kinds of goodies. I roasted grape tomatoes*, grated some fresh gruyere, added cucumber, onion, edamame beans, and the finishing touch: homemade croutons. I topped the salad with a dressing made of champagne vinegar, olive oil and lemon juice. I normally add some salt and pepper to the dressing, but since the croutons already had that, I didn't want to overdo it. *To roast cherry tomatoes: First, cut all the tomatoes... Continue reading

First of all - I accidentally scared off the daddy bird this evening - oops! I haven't seen him come back yet, but maybe if I stop sticking my face against the window through the blinds he'll show up. I am getting ready to tune into Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution (the show!) on ABC. He's going to try to transform the "unhealthiest" town in America. I can't wait! I almost feel like he needs Gordon Ramsay with him. Jamie doesn't seem like he could really whip people into shape like Chef Ramsay can. So, Jamie could be the leader and... Continue reading

This sweet little birdie has made one of my flower boxes into her nest! How cool is that? I love getting to see here out there, and I can't wait until her little babies hatch! I'm going to get some birdseed to put out there for her. It doesn't seem to bother her if I open the door or the window, but we're trying not to disturb her so we don't upset her or scare her off (I want to be a good neighbor!). I'm just so happy she's decided to make my balcony her home for a little while. Continue reading

Yesterday, I came home from work to find that Alex had pigged out on a loaf of chocolate bread that I had stupidly left on the table. I was planning to take the bread to work to share, but Alex thought he needed to try to eat it all himself. After much difficulty trying to discern exactly how much chocolate he had ingested, I figured out he hadn't eaten a toxic amount. There is a lovely chart in a dog book I have that tells you how much of all the different kinds of chocolate is toxic to your dog,... Continue reading

I found this amazing marinara sauce over at Smitten Kitchen. I am a big fan of pasta dishes that contain butter. (Actually, I am a big fan of just about anything with butter!) So, of course, when I stumbled upon this marinara that's made with butter, it was love at first sight! And it's ridiculously easy to make. Even better!! I made this sauce one night for dinner after work. It smelled so good while it was cooking, I kept running over and eating spoonfuls out of the pot. The sauce turned out beautifully. It was delicious - I ate... Continue reading

My bedroom walls! I've been on the search for a color to replace the unfortunate smurf-esque shade that is currently gracing my walls. I wanted something more vibrant. After much deliberation and thought - I'm just going to go all out and paint it bright green. I've chosen Benjamin Moore "Baby Fern" - the shade that's used on the walls in the bottom right picture. I can't wait! (I wonder if brighter walls will help me get up on time in the mornings?) ps - I just learned how to use Mosaic Maker and I can already feel an obsession... Continue reading

Tonight, I had a raging headache. My original, awesome Meatless Monday plan of this and this was postponed. I ended up baking a yam in the oven and throwing some butter and brown sugar on it. I then proceeded to curl up on the couch with Alex and watch the Golden Girls until bedtime. Continue reading

We had the nicest weather today we've had since last summer. It was such a beautiful day. Windows were opened, jackets came off, and I was wishing I could be outside. I am always so excited and grateful when the first days of spring finally arrive. After the winter, the sun seems brighter and even though the air is damp and cool, there's the promise of warmth to come. It feels lovely to say "Farewell, Old Man Winter!" image - ComunicaTI Continue reading

After a rejuvenating weekend, I am happy to report that I am back in the game. I did lots of catching up yesterday around the house. The laundry's caught up, the kitchen is clean, and my stress level is back within acceptable parameters. I made a less ambitious meal plan for this week, and stocked up at the grocery store. I feel better now that my cupboards aren't completely bare! I don't know about everyone else, but I LOVE going to the grocery store. I'm surrounded by food - what could be better than that? Today is Meatless Monday, and... Continue reading

image - JOE M500 I had this image of how my life would change when I decided to live more deliberately, cut back and acquire some homemaking skills. This image I had of things did not include a massively large pile of dirty laundry, dirty dishes piled up, no food in the pantry and a frazzled me. But that's what I've gotten. I naively assumed I would just fall right into cooking all my meals, using fresh and ethical ingredients, of course. And I also assumed that all my other goals would fall right into place behind the cooking. Instead,... Continue reading

A while ago (in the midst of the 800 snowstorms we've had), I began doing research to find pick-your-own farms around here. I am going to learn to put up this spring, and I wanted to figure out where I was going to get all the stuff I will put up. During my research, I came across Miller Farms Market, located just outside Fredericksburg. They sell all sorts of local produce, eggs, milk, cheese, flour, ice cream. I was determined to make a trek out that way as soon as the weather finally ended its onslaught. This past Saturday was... Continue reading

Tonight, I made beef stroganoff (sorry, no prep pictures - only leftovers!) I used a new recipe and it called for creme fraiche to make the sauce, which I was so excited about trying. The recipe also called for everything to be served over rice. That was a change for me - I am used to beef stroganoff being served over egg noodles. Well, I cooked it and served it up, and I didn't like it at all. At first, I thought it was the sauce I didn't like, but then I ate some of the meat and mushrooms out... Continue reading
