Lots of things "can't" be made in Australia, not because we lack the skills but because wages and conditions for workers are high - yes, higher even than the USA - which is good for the workers lucky enough to have a job, but bad for the unemployed and the consumers who want to buy locally made (and locally grown). There, that's the first politically informed comment I'm ever likely to make - ever!
I Have a Question !!
Why , when I am buying lovely crispy apples, grown here in Australia, do I put them in a plastic bag made in USA ?? Can't Australia make a plastic bag ??
Nice choice of new name!
Mosaic Road
As I have a new adventure unfolding before me I am wanting a new look blog to reflect my lifestyle change. And I would prefer not to pay for it. So while I fiddle with trialling other platforms I have chosen a new name and a new header. Manningroad is now Mosaic Road and I will continue with Typ...
It's a lovely photo - no turning back!
I Won !!
I don't enter many competitions and I certainly don't take prize winning photos so this just was just my lucky day. I did what was required - I shared my snaps - and won churros for two at San Churros in Windsor. Yum !!!!
Please please can I have the empty box when you've finished?
A Gift from Berlin
This week I was give an amazing box of chocolates, bought to me all the way from Berlin. The store , Rausch Plantagen Schokolade, where they came from was first opened in 1890 and apparently many royals are among their customers. Their chocolate is made from single origin cocoa and each bar in...
Enter if you Dare...
Way out of date in more ways than one! Who would even use the abbreviation "Gents" outside a comedy routine? This sign is inside the Trades Hall building, and I suspect it will be preserved to amaze future visitors. Restoration of this grand and very shabby building is ongoing and will be for a very long time - it is full of similarly wonderful curiosities. Continue reading

A Sad Story
I originally intended to show this rusty, faded "Keep Melbourne Beautiful" sign, which is in the city on Swanston Street, not far from Flinders Street Station. It's up so high on the post and looks so out of date that I doubt anyone ever pays attention to it. The city council shouldn't bother with replacements - if they are serious about the beauty of cleanliness, what they need is a rapid response anti-vomit patrol! I digress. When I took the photo I didn't notice the little red "Diwali" sign and oil-lamp motifs which had sneaked into the background. The Diwali... Continue reading

What Can I Say?
The sign is self-explanatory, and the topic is supposed to be signage... but the attraction of truffles (bland & earthy) is beyond me! And while I'm off the subject of signage, I don't like chestnuts (gritty & stodgy), saffron (pretty but a horrid flavour), or the smell of patchouli (like an overpowering washing powder) either. But if I ever come across them on a sign, you will see it here! Continue reading

A Touch of Folk Art in Brunswick
Such a cute little painted dog's face in the green kennel - the kennel maker must be an artist as well as an architect of kennels - look at the variety of styles! Continue reading
