By Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com Many of you know I am not a big advocate of Chemotherapy. Administering toxic chemicals into your body, in the conventional manner, is unquestionably harmful to your healthy cells and immune system. The staggering side effects are akin to a "pyrrhic victory". This is not my idea of an ideal therapy. However, there is a methodology of administering Chemotherapy which may be more efficacious and less toxic than the traditional methods used by most conventional Oncologists. If you are considering Chemotherapy as the singular or predominant treatment approach, or using Chemo in conjunction with other... Continue reading

By Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com Definition of Angiogenesis (University of Maryland Cancer Center) - Blood vessel formation. Tumor angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow. This is caused by the release of chemicals by the tumor. Definition of Angiogenesis Inhibitor (University of Maryland Cancer Center) - A substance that may prevent the formation of blood vessels. In anticancer therapy, an angiogenesis inhibitor may prevent the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow. Dr. William Li is the founder of the Angiogenesis Foundation, the world's first nonprofit organization dedicated to conquering disease... Continue reading

By Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com Following, are excerpts from an interview conducted a few years ago with Dr. Dean Ornish, a highly respected Harvard trained Medical Doctor. His well known study of Prostate Cancer patients, published in 2005, pertains to the fact that significant “lifestyle changes” can actually change the expression of one’s genes and engender a major impact on Cancer progression. Specifically, the study was conducted with men with a Gleason score of under 7. The lifestyle changes included dietary changes (vegan diet), supplementation, relaxation and stress reduction techniques, as well as exercise, 30 minutes per day, 6 days... Continue reading

By Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com I recently had the privilege of attending a conference in Scottsdale, Arizona where Donald Yance of the Mederi Foundation (www.mederifoundation.org), located in Ashland, Oregon, spoke about the significant efficacy of botanical and nutritional medicine, as a compelling therapy in the fight against Cancer. He incorporates a collaborative, multi-faceted approach, known as ETMS, i.e., Eclectic Triphasic Medical System. ETMS is, essentially, an operating system which provides a framework with a highly customized protocol for each patient. It is tailored to help strengthen the patient and his/her immune system, and, simultaneously, to weaken the Cancer. Donald Yance... Continue reading

By Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com Two weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending a Cancer Conference known as the "Cancer Control Society" Conference, in Los Angeles, California. This Conference just completed its 38th consecutive year. The Convention Director and Founder is an icon of the alternative Cancer movement. Her name is Lorraine Rosenthal. I had the privilege of having lunch with Lorraine one day. I learned that she is truly dedicated to "the cause" and done a great job in promoting a wonderful Conference, educating thousands of people, and certainly directly impacting the lives of thousands of people suffering... By Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com Dr. Merrill Garnett founded a treatment for Cancer commonly known as Poly MVA. Poly MVA is characterized as a cell nutrient, an anti-tumor agent and a non-toxic chemotherapy agent. Essentially, it is more a super nutrient or anti-oxidant than a drug. Purportedly, it protects cellular DNA and RNA. There are not any significant clinical trials attesting to its efficacy, however, there is significant anecdotal evidence and testimonials from numerous, happy Cancer patients which has engendered serious interest in its therapeutic benefits. Approximately 200-300 Doctors prescribe and treat their patients with Poly MVA. It is assumed... Continue reading

By Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com I have read the stories ... I have met the people ... if you have ever been diagnosed with Cancer, no matter what Stage of Cancer, no matter when, DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT become complacent, cavalier or over confident that you are cured. When a Doctor says you are "cancer free", he or she is really saying that the diagnostic tools, and technology available, cannot measure any evidence of Cancer in your body at the time of that test. Beware, it does not mean that you do not have microscopic cancer cells lurking... Continue reading

By Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com Dr. William B. Coley a Harvard Medical School graduate, inadvertently stumbled upon, what would become a major Cancer treatment around the turn of the century (around 1900). As the Chief of the Bone Cancer Department at NY Memorial Hospital (which later became Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) he began to use a dead mixture of bacteria which he would inject into or around the tumor of a Cancer patient. This injection (vaccine) would engender a significant fever (aka - "fever shot") in the range of 103-105 degrees, which in turn would stimulate the immune system.... Continue reading

by Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com For a few days at the beginning of January, last month (of 2010), I attended an Evidence Based Cancer Conference in West Palm Beach, Florida. I went to the conference with a bit of skepticism about the veracity of what I would hear as well as the credentials and motivations of the presenters. The intent of the conference was to enlighten its attendees and present new information about treatments, therapies and cancer fighting agents. The attendees were a mixture of Doctors, Hospital administrators, Nurses, Nutritional Experts, Cancer Advocates, numerous Cancer patients and many others with... Continue reading

By Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com NOTE - The following article was written by Ralph Moss, the founder of www.cancerdecisions.com. It was published as an opinion piece in the New York Times on April 1, 2007. I believe the article elucidates one of the primary reasons why many promising drugs, treatments and therapies never become available to Cancer patients in desperate need of help. Unfortunately and sadly, many existing treatments and prospective treatments fall victim to the marketplace realities, which are illuminated, clearly, in the article below. This article manifests the great need for "change" ... a change enabling promising treatments... Continue reading

by Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com DESSERT - YUMMY !! ..... PASS THE SWEET STUFF (OR MAYBE I SHOULD PASS ON THE SWEET STUFF !!) Dessert is frequently considered the most enjoyable part of a meal, but as science is clearly demonstrating, perhaps the deadliest. Sugar fuels Cancer. It is believed by most pundits that Cancer loves and concentrates sugar. Soda pop, cakes, cookies, ice cream, certain carbohydrates, other sweets and refined sugars are essentially devoid of any nutritonal benefit and, furthermore, they provide Cancer cells (remember we all have Cancer cells) with significant energy to thrive and multiply. It is... Continue reading

by Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com Note - if you have trouble viewing this article, please go to www.latestagecancer.com. Many species of medicinal mushrooms have been used in folk medicine for thousands of years. Such use has its origins in the Far East. The research and corresponding evidence pertaining to the mushroom's healthful, preventative benefits and healing processes is impressive. There are over 100,000 different varieties of mushrooms, however, less than 100 exhibit the properties which contain anti-cancer mechanisms. Some of the more well known, beneficial ones are : Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake, Chaga, Lions Mane, White Button, Sun, Caterpillar, Turkey Tail,... Continue reading

The Oncologist says - "we can give you chemo and it may give you another 2-4 months, otherwise, there is not much else we can do ... go home and live your life". This is not a fictional quote, some Cancer patients hear something like this, every day ... The patient visits an Alternative, Progressive or Integrative Doctor for advice ... The Doctor says - "there are no guarantees, although we have had good success before ... if you follow this strict dietary regimen, the following specific supplements and the XYZ protocol, we may be able to strengthen your immune... by Rick Shapiro of www.latestagecancer.com Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT), also known as Insulin Potentiation Targeted Low Dose Therapy (IPTLD), is a relatively new approach to fighting Cancer. It has only been used in the United States since the 1990's, however, it is a time proven approach to treating Cancer since it was originally founded and developed in Mexico by Dr. Donato Perez Garcia in 1932. The therapy is essentially a hybrid of alternative and conventional perspectives. IPT is the administration of a much lower dose of chemo, which selectively targets Cancer cells. For the most part, it does not deleteriously... Continue reading

Flaxseed has been cited in numerous studies as being potentially helpful in the prevention of Cancer as well as being potentially helpful to people in their current, active fight against Cancer. There are too many studies to quote or reference, therefore, we have just referred to two. Click on the words "studies", above, to see them, and at the very least, read their conclusions. The second study, recorded in the Nutrition Journal in October, 2004, provides valuable information about foods which are harmful to one's diet, as well as beneficial foods and nutrition to incorporate into one's diet, in addition... Prior to accusing someone of being a fake, a charlatan or master exploiter, it is critical to carefully research and investigate the charlatans purported transgressions, before condemning that person’s behavior, philosophy or assertions. Many people accuse adherents of alternative medicine of being charlatans and their treatments as being unproven or disproven, therefore, they surmise that such treatments should not be used or relied upon as being potentially beneficial for Cancer patients. I think we would all agree that empty accusations (from any party), lacking any substantiation from opposing interests, may be tantamount to defamation. Thus, we must seriously consider the... The following respected scientists and doctors have articulated serious questions and opinions related to the efficacy of chemotherapy : Dr. Abel, PhD : In a 1989 study - " ... the personal views of many oncologists seem to be in striking contrast to communications intended for the public." Dr. Martin Shapiro wrote an article in the Los Angeles Times, 1/9/87, "Chemotherapy: Snake-Oil Remedy?" : " "Some oncologist inform their patients of the lack of evidence that treatments work ... others may well be misled by scientific papers that express unwarranted optimism about chemotherapy. Still others respond to an economic incentive.... Continue reading

Few Oncologists will suggest dietary changes as part of any treatment protocol. I assume most don’t believe nutrition and dietary changes can significantly influence a person’s health or perhaps they are relatively ignorant of the potential benefits of eating certain foods and abstaining from others. Perhaps they haven’t seen any randomized, controlled clinical trials with thousands of people which clearly demonstrate the incontrovertible benefits of good dietary habits. Excuse the sarcasm, but I believe certain things are common sense and do not require multi-million dollar studies. Notwithstanding the absence of large scale clinical trials pertaining to the positive impact of... Continue reading

When it came to spicy or hot foods like horse radish or hot salsa’s, my Dad use to say “the hotter the better” – so pass the chili peppers. Today, men with Prostate or Pancreatic Cancer might consider adding the "hot stuff" to their diets (beware it is very hot !!). In a study reported by Cancer Research, conducted at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, in collaboration with UCLA Doctors and researchers, it was concluded that an ingredient known as capsaicin, found in habanero peppers, had the ability to drive prostate cancer cells to commit suicide (known... The origins of chemotherapy hail from the post World War II, 1940’s. Since that time, there has been progress in the development of better chemo drugs, however, in “the big picture” the efficacy and benefits of chemo as it effects most Cancers is highly questionable. The use of chemo in our conventional medical culture is deeply imbeded in the minds of most existing and prospective patients, as the necessary and normal mode of treatment. This perspective is certainly understandable. After all, most doctors prescribe it, insurance pays for it, and huge sums of money are invested in developing and selling... Continue reading
